Chapter 004 – Rewards

Hearing/seeing that notification was the high point of his day. Being able to complete the mission without getting hurt made him very happy.

Alexander hurriedly opened his mission tab to see the new information for the completed mission, as well as its rewards. "Missions."

  『 Missions 』

  Survive (Part I)

  Mission Type: Survival

  Mission Description: Acquire the minimum necessary to survive and gather information about your surroundings. Completion Evaluation: {S}

Rewards: (50 experience points); (1 Growth Point); (Basic Spellbook {Selectable Element}).

  Extra Task: Acquire materials in excess of what you need to survive, but that are useful for your survival. Completion Evaluation: {S}

Rewards for the extra task: (100 experience points); (1 Free Attribute Point); (Sturdy Iron Dagger).

Note: Any completion evaluation higher than {A} will provide other reward(s)]

The rewards made him very happy. But even after waiting a few minutes, nothing happened.

Not knowing what to do to collect the rewards, he could only use trial and error. And after several attempts, he finally discovered he needed to wish/think about finalizing/completing the mission to receive its rewards.

[You completed the mission: Survive (Part I)]

[You received: (150 XP Points); (1 Growth Point); (1 Free Attribute Point); (Basic Spellbook {Selectable Element}); (Sturdy Iron Dagger)]

  Ding!

[You leveled up. But due to the interference of the special skill |Attribute Control|, all your attribute increases upon leveling up were denied and converted into free attribute points.]

  *[+7 free attribute points]*

  *[+1 growth point]*

  Ding!

[Please select the element of the basic spellbook: (Fire); (Earth); (Water); (Wind); (Lightning); (Light); (Darkness)]

"Selectable element? Can I use other elements?"

"Because if that's true, my choice is easy," Alexander concluded after thinking a bit. "I just need to choose the best combination with the water element."

Analyzing the options, he reached a conclusion: "Among the other elements, the one that seems to best combine with water spells is lightning. So I want the lightning element."

  Ding!

[You received the basic spellbook: [Minor Lightning]]

  Ding!

  [Mission Obtained]

Ignoring the new mission, Alexander focused on taking the items. The first was a large, sturdy dagger, which very much looked like a sword on a smaller scale; and the second was an old, worn-looking book, which triggered another notification in his head when he touched it.

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

  Ding!

[Basic spellbook identified. Do you wish to spend (1) growth point to learn the basic spell: |Minor Lightning|?]

"It seems I really can use spells from other elements," he thought while accepting to spend 1 of his growth points.

  Ding!

[You learned the basic spell: |Minor Lightning|]

Just like the other times, knowledge began to invade his head, but that was no longer news. What really surprised him was the book remaining unchanged.

"Strange... this book allowed me to learn a spell, but it's not a grimoire. At least not by Earth's definitions," Alexander analyzed while holding the book. "Grimoires were supposed to be of two types: non-magical ones, which come with instructions for a spell; and magical ones, which allow an individual to learn the spell contained within at the cost of their magical power."

Pondering about the book, he concluded it was strange: "Even if it only teaches a basic spell, such an unbalanced item shouldn't exist."

Intrigued, Alexander opened the book to see its contents, but couldn't understand anything. The book was written in a language he didn't know.

He knew many languages thanks to his research, but this one was very different from Earth's. Fortunately, there was a good squire. And like a good squire, the system came to his aid in this moment of difficulty.

  Ding!

[Acceptable language identified. Do you wish to spend (1) growth point to learn the special passive skill |World Language|?]

  "Yes."

  Ding!

[You learned the special passive skill: |World Language|]

Just as when he learned his spells and skills, the knowledge about this new language entered his head. But the process this time was much more intense.

When the process ended, Alexander had one certainty: "Now this is the language I know and understand best."

By learning an entire new language like this, he understood what happened: "So that's it. That spellbook isn't special, the system is."

"It's going to be hard to live with something I don't understand, but I must admit: learning the language of this place, at this level, is very useful," Alexander cheered himself up.

Since he didn't want to think too much about things he couldn't understand, he began to read the book. But since its content was the same as what he received when learning the spell |Minor Lightning|, he set it aside and picked up the dagger to inspect it: "A 30-35cm piercing-cutting blade with a double edge; a small but solid guard; a 11-13cm hilt/grip; a small but dense pommel; and a leather and metal sheath with a loop."

Upon wielding the dagger, Alexander realized its size was ideal for the moment, as he could use it both as a human and as a goblin. In contrast, its weight was well above what he considered viable in combat, especially for a weapon that was supposed to be one-handed.

Finishing inspecting the items, he spread out the rabbit skins that weren't being used to wrap the meat on the branches of a small tree, to take advantage of the remaining sunlight, and went to sit in the shade of a tree to see his new mission.

  『 Missions 』

  Survive (Part II)

  Mission Type: Survival.

Mission Description: Survive for 10 days.

Rewards: (5000 XP points), (Survivor's Boots), (1 growth point) and (5 free attribute points)

Extra Task: Kill one or more monsters during your survival time.

Rewards for the extra task: (100 XP for each monster slain) and (Reward(s) proportional to your completion evaluation)

"This extra task is complicated," thought Alexander. "The last mission didn't increase my survival risk, as its tasks were things I would normally need to do to survive. But this one is actively inducing me to confront those monsters."

Not knowing quite what to do next, or how to proceed with the mission, he began to plan what he was going to do.

After spending a long time thinking about it, Alexander realized it was starting to get dark and went to get the skins he had left in the sun. They had become so soft that he used |Appraise| on one of them along with the new items.

[Basic Spellbook: Contains information about the spell |Minor Lightning|.]

[Sturdy Iron Dagger: A dagger designed for small races. It is virtually a miniature sword.]

[Soft Rabbit Hide (Rustic): A rabbit hide in good condition that was processed and hydrated with some mana-infused liquid. Can be used to build some things, but its cut is rustic and irregular.]

Upon seeing that skin was considered rustic, Alexander remembered that the last one turned out better than the others, and used |Appraise| on it.

[Soft Rabbit Hide: A rabbit hide in good condition that was processed and hydrated with some mana-infused liquid. Can be used to build various things, as it does not have many irregularities.]
