Chapter 75 - The Weight of a Thread

Morning crept slowly over the Academy.

  Soft light.

  Cool air.

Whispers of last night's chaos still trembling in the stones.

  Alya hadn't slept.

  She couldn't.

  Her body felt strange—

  lighter in some places,

  heavier in others,

as if the Seal had rearranged her from the inside out.

Cael sat beside her on the infirmary bed, refusing to move by more than a meter.

Every time she shifted, he reacted.

Every time she inhaled too sharply, he tensed.

Every time she touched the glowing thread between them—

—it pulsed in both of their chests.

  Alya whispered:

  "...It's still here."

Cael nodded without looking away from her.

  "It won't go away."

Alya stared down at their hands—

the faint shimmer of the Heart Link glowing like a quiet pulse.

  She swallowed.

  "Does it hurt?"

  Cael shook his head.

  "No."

  A pause.

  "Does it hurt you?"

  Alya hesitated.

  "I don't know."

Ren sat on the next bed over, hugging a pillow to her chest like a life vest.

"Oh my gods, can you two PLEASE stop whispering like a married couple in a tragic play—my heart CANNOT TAKE THIS—"

Eris threw a blanket at her.

  "Shut up."

Lami offered a weak smile from her chair.

  "I-It's... sweet..."

  Ren pointed dramatically.

  "SEE? LAMI GETS IT."

Mila, still pale and wrapped in blankets, leaned her head back against the headboard.

"Your link is stable," she murmured.

  "But Ayla's aura... it's thinner."

  Alya stiffened.

Aster Vale entered the infirmary at that moment, staff tapping the floor softly.

Royal Road is the home of this novel. Visit there to read the original and support the author.

"That's because she gave up one form of power."

  Alya looked up at him.

  "What does that mean?"

  Aster's expression was gentle—

  but heavy.

"It means you are weaker now...

  and stronger."

  Ren flopped backward.

  "WOW. SO CLARIFYING. THANK YOU."

  Aster ignored her.

  "Your ascension path is gone.

But in exchange, you gained something else."

  Alya blinked.

  "...What?"

Aster turned his gaze toward Cael.

  "Shared resonance."

  Cael froze.

  Alya did too.

"What... does that do?" she asked.

  Aster stepped closer.

  "Touch."

  Alya hesitated.

  Then she reached out—

  her fingers brushing Cael's.

  The thread between them sparked.

  Suddenly—

Alya felt something warm rush through her chest.

  Not hers.

  Not the Seal's.

  Cael's.

  His heartbeat.

  His thoughts.

  His fear.

  His protectiveness.

His steady attempt to stay calm.

  Alya gasped.

  "I—I felt that—"

  Cael's eyes widened.

  "I felt you feel it."

  Ren screeched.

"WHAT IS THIS, THE UPGRADED COUPLE'S EDITION—"

  Aster explained calmly:

"Through the Heart Link, Ayla can draw stability from Cael...

and Cael can receive small impressions from Ayla."

  Eris frowned.

  "Isn't that dangerous?"

  Aster looked directly at Ayla.

  "It is."

  Alya's stomach dropped.

  "How dangerous?"

  Aster sighed.

"If he's hurt, you'll feel it."

  Cael stiffened.

"And if you're hurt," Aster added,

  "he may feel it too."

Ren put a hand on her forehead.

"Oh GREAT. Perfect. Amazing. Emotional health? Never heard of her."

  Lami whispered quietly:

"T-then... they have to protect each other..."

  Aster shook his head.

  "No.

Alya must learn to protect him."

  He turned toward Cael.

"And Cael must learn to stay alive."

  Cael scowled.

  "I already do that."

  Aster raised an eyebrow.

  "Do you?"

Cael looked away with clear indignance.

  Ren whispered loudly to Eris,

  "He doesn't."

  Alya's Powers Falter

Alya winced as another pulse of faint pain hit her chest.

She instinctively reached for wind magic—

  her fingertips glowing faintly—

—and then the glow sputtered and died.

  Alya stared.

  "...What?"

  She tried again.

  Fire.

  Earth.

  Water.

  Each one flickered,

  hesitated,

  and weakened.

  Cael moved forward instantly.

  "Alya—?"

  Aster stepped closer, voice gentle.

  "Your magic is unstable.

  Not gone—

  just... thinner."

  Alya's stomach twisted.

  "Because I gave up ascension?"

  Aster nodded.

"You sacrificed raw potential for emotional anchoring.

  Your magic will recover—

but it will always depend on your heart."

Alya looked down at her hands.

  "My heart..."

She looked at the glowing thread.

  "...and Cael."

  Aster nodded.

"You must learn to balance power with emotion."

  Ren threw up her hands.

"Ayla, sweetie, I love you, but emotions are your worst stat—"

Eris yanked her down before Cael stabbed her.

Mila watched quietly, eyes still glowing faintly from her earlier connection to the Seal.

  "Alya... your path isn't weaker."

  She lifted a trembling hand.

  "It's... different."

  Alya frowned.

  "Different how?"

  Mila swallowed.

"You're like the center of a storm...

but you're not the storm itself."

Before Ayla could ask what that meant—

  The infirmary windows rattled.

  Wind slammed against the building.

  Lights flickered.

  Everyone froze.

  Eris shot upright.

  "That's not natural wind—"

  Aster's eyes sharpened.

  "He's here."

  Alya's pulse spiked.

  "Rian?"

  Aster shook his head.

  "No."

  Lami squeaked.

  "T-then who—?"

A voice carried through the cracked window,

  soft and eerie:

  "...Convergence..."

  Alya's blood ran cold.

  It wasn't Rian.

  It wasn't a student.

  It wasn't a teacher.

  It was the forest.

  Calling her.

  Aster murmured:

  "The Seal changed your path.

Now the realm wants to see what kind of Convergence you'll become."

  Ren shrieked,

  "CAN IT NOT? WE'RE BUSY!"

  The voice called again:

  "Convergence... come."

  Alya stood up slowly.

  Cael rose with her immediately.

  Their hands touched.

  The thread pulsed.

  Alya whispered:

  "I have to go."

  Cael shook his head.

  "I'm coming with you."

  Alya met his eyes

  and didn't argue.

  The world had shifted.

  Their destiny had changed.

  Her power had shifted.

His life was tied to hers.

  And the Seal wasn't done.

Alya tightened her grip on Cael's hand.

  "Then we go together."
