CHAPTER 25 — New Rift, New Danger
Aiden didn’t stop moving until the mercenaries’ voices faded completely behind him. The forest thinned, giving way to uneven hills and patches of open land. The air grew colder, sharper, carrying a faint metallic tang that made the hairs on his arms rise.
He slowed.
That feeling—he knew it.
Rift energy.
Aiden climbed a small ridge and crouched at the top. Below, nestled between a cluster of abandoned farmhouses, a swirling tear in reality pulsed with violet light. It wasn’t large—barely the size of a truck—but the air around it warped and shimmered.
A small Rift.
Fresh.
Unclaimed.
Aiden exhaled.
“Of course.”
He scanned the area. No Guild patrols. No mercenaries. No civilians. Just the quiet hum of unstable space.
Perfect.
He descended the ridge, moving carefully across the cracked dirt. The Rift pulsed again, sending ripples through the ground. Aiden felt them through his boots—subtle, rhythmic, almost like… vibrations.
He stepped closer.
A shrill, distorted screech tore through the air.
Aiden froze.

Something crawled out of the Rift.
It was small—barely the size of a wolf—but its body shimmered like liquid glass. Its limbs were thin and jagged, vibrating at high frequency. Its head was featureless except for a single slit that pulsed like a speaker membrane.
A Sound Forceborn.
Aiden’s heartbeat quickened.
The creature twitched.
Then vanished.
Aiden’s Perception flared—an instinctive pulse of awareness.
*Left.*
He ducked just as the creature reappeared beside him, slicing the air with a vibrating claw. The attack missed by inches, carving a deep groove into the dirt.
Aiden rolled backward, adjusting his weight with Gravity, and steadied himself.
The creature flickered again.
It moved by sound—by vibration—by resonance.
Aiden closed his eyes for half a second.
He listened.
The creature’s movements weren’t silent. They left faint distortions—tiny ripples in the air, like pressure waves. His Perception caught them, tracked them, mapped them.
The creature flickered behind him.
Aiden spun, swinging the rebar in a wide arc.
The blow connected.
The Sound Forceborn screeched, its body destabilizing. Aiden pressed forward, slamming a Gravity?boosted strike into its core. The creature shattered into fragments of vibrating glass.
A faint Core rose from the remains, humming softly.
Aiden reached out and absorbed it.
A sharp, electric pulse shot through his skull.
[SOUND FORCE — Acquired]
[Sound Force — Level 1]
Aiden staggered, gripping his head as the world shifted around him.
Every sound sharpened.
Every vibration deepened.
Every movement carried a signature.
A second notification flickered.
[PERCEPTION FORCE — Level Up]
[Perception — 1 → 2]
Aiden inhaled sharply.
He could feel everything.
The wind brushing against leaves.
The distant hum of insects.
The faint tremor of the Rift behind him.
Even the echo of his own heartbeat.
He steadied himself, letting the new senses settle.
The Rift pulsed again.
Aiden turned toward it, gripping the rebar.
More creatures would come.
More danger.
More opportunities.
But he wasn’t here to clear the Rift.
He was here to learn.
He stepped back from the swirling tear, watching it pulse in the fading light. The rural town beyond the ridge was quiet, unaware of the threat forming on its doorstep.
Aiden tightened his grip.
He couldn’t stay long.
He couldn’t draw attention.
But he couldn’t ignore this either.
He took one last look at the Rift.
Then he slipped into the shadows, senses sharper than ever, moving toward the outskirts of the town.
The world was changing.
And so was he.
