"Thank you Duncan, send the map marking the routes, reserves and potential strongholds," Leto said.
"Alright," Duncan nodded as his video disappeared from the projection, replaced by a map of Arrakis, specifically Arakeen. It was an updated map with markings all over, some places showed routes to escape out of Arrakeen, some places were marked as strongholds and some were marked as reserves.
"Okay," Duke Leto said as he clasped his hands.
"This is the true reason I have called for this council meeting," he said as he stood up, his eyes glancing around the room.
"After the signing ceremony, Paul came to me privately, and he spoke of a vision." Duke Leto said pointing towards Jack.
All eyes shifted to Paul, especially Jessica's.
"He informed me that in his vision Arakeen was attacked upon nightfall with a fleet large enough to crush Arakeen."
"In this attack... Our house would not survive the night." Duke Leto said as he sat down.
Thufir's eyes turned white for a moment but he remained silent.
'If this is true, then the Emperor is committed...' Jessica thought to herself, her eyes staying on Leto as he continued speaking.
"That is why, for the past nearly two weeks, I have asked you all to do these preparations."
"A fleet of that magnitude cannot move without Imperial sanction," Thufir spoke.
"Indeed, that is the conclusion Paul and I had come upon as well."
Gurney shifted in his seat a little.
'Alright, the cat is out of the bag.' Jack prepared himself. He glanced around, his eyes lingering on Jessica for a moment.
"Paul," Jessica said as she her eyes locked contact with Jack.
"How certain are you?" She asked, gauging even the most subtle reactions.
Jack remained calm for a moment, silence stretching a little before he spoke, "It was the clearest vision I have ever had to date," Jack said.
'If Paul sees this clearly… he is accelerating beyond projection.' She thought to herself as her eyes shifted away.
"Visions are not data," Thufir said as his eye flashed white again.
If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
"Preparation does not require certainty, only cautiousness. Visions show possibility, not probability," Jessica said glancing at Thufir.
Thufir's eyes flashed white for a moment before turning normal. "Indeed, it remains a possibility, perhaps the attack will not occur in the same way it did in Vision. At what point in time did this attack occur in your vision Paul?" Thufir asked staring at Jack.
'I knew this was coming,' Jack thought to himself.
"It's hard to provide a proper timeline, but I can't imagine it was too far away from us settling on Arrakeen due to the troop deployment formations in my vision being immature, allowing for an unstoppable rampage of the enemy, we had not had enough time to fully settle," Jack said.
Thufir's eyes flashed white for a moment, “If the vision reflects strategic timing, the strike would occur before our defenses fully mature. Estimated window: one to three months post-arrival.” Thufir said.
"So once we land on Arrakeen, we fortify for siege?” Gurney questioned staring at Duke Leto.
“We must assume Arakeen falls,” Jack said quietly.
Jessica nodded towards Paul agreeing with him.
"Yes, we fortify for siege, but the attack can happen at any time within the first three months we are there, that's why I have had Duncan establish escape routes, strongholds and resource points," Leto said as he pointed towards the map.
“If Arakeen cannot be held against Imperial-supported assault, preservation of command structure becomes priority,” Thufir said with a nod.
“You want to abandon the city?” Gurney asked Thufir with a frown.
Silence.
Nobody spoke up.
The moment stretched for a while before Duke Leto coughed grabbing everyone's attention.
“We do not abandon Arakeen.”
“But we do not allow our house to die defending stone.” Duke Leto said, "We will fortify Arakeen for siege to the best of our ability, but most importantly, we will establish an off-grid desert command network." Duke Leto said as he stood up.
"Thufir. Gurney. Begin preparations to depart, Thufir. Keep investigating for internal leaks, Gurney, prepare the military for siege, After landing on Arrakis, the nights are when we are required to be the most attentive," Duke Leto said concluding the meeting.
Getting up from the chair, Jack made his way outside, wanting some fresh air. Stepping into the hall, he began walking towards the gates to leave the building. He hadn't gone too far when he heard Lady Jessica call out his name.
Turning around, he saw her approaching him.
A few moments later she arrived in front of him, she spoke, "You claimed that it was the clearest vision you have ever had, did it feel… narrow?”
Jack was silent for a moment.
'She might rush and report to the Bene Gesirit if my current vision levels are too out of their estimations.'
"No, it didn't, it was subtle but it felt like there were other paths," Jack said.
"Very well, be careful which path you believe is yours," Jessica said before she turned around and walked away, her face not betraying an ounce of emotion.
'Always with the dramatics, ' Jack almost let out a sigh.
...
Moonlight streamed into the room through the open windows, and gentle waves blew as Jack slept peacefully.
His eyes suddenly shot open.
With a sharp breath he sat upright.
Sweat dripped down his brow.
Glancing around, Jack quickly reached for a cup of water beside his bed.
Chugging it, the refreshing sensation instantly washed away the dryness in his throat.
"It's that same vision again..." Jack murmured, "...who is that?" Jack let out a sigh, lying down on the bed.
He just stared at the roof of the room in silence, enjoying this momentary peace.
"Three days before we move..."
"Yueh..." Jack muttered, his eyes complicated.
'I know what I have to do today... but I don't know if I will be able to pull it off...' Jack let out a sigh as he shut his eyes.
