Chapter 6: Advance Pay

  Chapter 6: Advance Pay

“The coin is in your left hand!”

Shade pointed towards Ms. Snow’s left hand after confirming his divination. Ms. Snow’s facial expression changed, and she struggled to hide her laughter.

  “Huh?”

Shade started feeling embarrassed, he thought that it wasn’t surprising if someone new to mysticism would fail on their first try, but maybe he was wrong… Am I wrong?

Shade noticed that Specter was also laughing to the side. A vision flashed before his eyes… What was that?

Shade looked towards Mr. Specter who noticed his gaze. Shade pointed at Mr. Specter

“The coin is in Mr. Specter’s right hand.”

  “Huh?”

“What? How did you… It is but…”

Shade shifted his gaze to Ms. Snow and thought for a moment before speaking.

“I had a vision of Mr. Specter showing what he had in his hand. There laid a coin, so I took a chance.”

Ms. Snow and Mr. Specter looked at each other. Mr. Specter gestured with his shoulders with a smug expression. Ms. Snow shook her head while smiling before explaining.

“You had two divination characteristics. It isn’t surprising that you could get glimpses of a possible future or past.

However, you shouldn’t expect another one until one or two months later. The number of your spirit characteristics are too low.

And for your information, I was planning to let the coin slide down my shirt and then tell you that you shouldn’t rely on divination to be perfect.

Most of the time, divination only shows a possible future, and the answers you get through divination is never complete. Think of divination as a way to gain clues, nothing more.”

  “I understand…”

Shade answered calmly. Shade spent three more days training and learning mysticism.

He learned that when performing rituals with the mystic as a medium it was best and safest to set up a spiritual barrier with a ceremonial knife.

These rituals include certain divination methods, curses, and when he wants to enter the spirit or demon world.

  “Is our young Magician here?”

  “Huh? Captain!”

Mr. Rouge had just entered the underground temple looking dazed and tired with a bag in hand.

The captain and two other members of the Silver Moon Private Detective Agency hadn’t returned for four days. Mr. Specter ran up to the captain with a worried expression.

“Where are the other two? Did they-”

“No, they are with the mystics of the Church of Dreams. We managed to hunt down some Cultists to an abandoned house. After managing to corner them, they released spirits into our world.

Those spirits currently occupy the whole house, and we don’t have anyone capable of exorcizing the whole house. So, we need to exorcize them one by one.”

Unauthorized use: this story is on Amazon without permission from the author. Report any sightings.

Rouge looked at Shade and Snow before continuing his explanation with a tired expression.

“Very few mystics below the level of saint can see spirits and demons with their bare eyes. We need someone capable of divination to see them. Get the crystal monocle pendants and ceremonial daggers.”

  “Right!”

Ms. Snow ran to the armoury in search for the right equipment. Rouge looked at Shade.

“It is a bit early, but we will be needing you on this mission. You have the most divination characteristics within the current lineup. The spirits need to be exorcized tonight.”

“I’ll help as long as you pay me!”

Shade answered boldly. Mr. Rouge was stunned for a moment before suddenly bellowing a laugh.

“Don’t worry, we will be sure to pay you. I will even add another 2 pounds this week. And… take this!”

Rouge threw the bag he was holding at Shade. Shade looked inside and saw some clothes and products.

“Think of it as advance payment. Put it on while we wait, I will help you with your hair.”

Shade put on the black trousers and silver belt that was inside the bag first. Then he put on a white shirt, dark coat, and short dark purple cape. With Mr. Rouges help, Shade managed to style his hair.

“We couldn’t have you looking like a tramp! But, now you look more like a noble. You look rather handsome!”

  “I agree!”

Mr. Rouge and Mr. Specter were appreciating Shade’s new appearance.

With the new clothes he finally looked like he deserved to be called Mr. Magician as he looked like one straight out of a noble fantasy novel.

Out of everyone, except Ms. Snow, Magician had the most noble-like appearance. He looked like he was trying to look like a noble, even next to an actual noble he would stand out as someone with excessive taste.

  “I got everything! Huh?”

Ms. Snow had just arrived with equipment, from her perspective, she was gone for no more than five minutes, and the ragged looking young man had suddenly been changed to a well-kept good looking young noble.

“Good, let’s go! The house is in the west, mystics from the church of dreams should be waiting for us there along with Ms. Astral and

  Mr. Zephyr.”

Ms. Snow threw a sword and dagger to Mr. Specter before handing Mr. Magician a dagger.

The daggers were made of silver with intricate design. The dagger looked more like an heirloom than a normal dagger.

Ms. Snow looked at Magician and gave a thumbs up. This was a very embarrassing moment for Mr. Magician, because most of his childhood memories of clothing would always end with someone saying, “It fits”.

However, now he had received multiple compliments. He wasn’t used to getting compliments, especially not for his appearance.

The four of them walked up the stone staircase and walked into the first floor of the detective agency.

After stepping out of the building Mr. Magician noticed a carriage with a silver moon emblem on it. A woman with blond hair sat ready to drive the carriage.

The woman was none other than Olivia Andersson. She and her brother work as civilian employees at the detective agency.

Civilian employees are not mystics, but they help the mystics with office work and miscellaneous work.

“Mr. Magician! Going out on your first mission, already?”

“Seems like it. Thanks again for delivering the letters to my siblings personally and for going out and buying us food.”

The blond haired woman laughed softly. She glanced at the other mystics and nodded as a greeting before talking to Mr. Magician again.

“Don’t worry about it! It’s my job! By the way…”

Olivia looked Mr. Magician up and down, and a large playful smile appeared on her face.

“You look good! I’ll take you out drinking when you return, I’ll take you to the best places!”

  “Sure… Thanks!”

A large but fake smile appeared on Magician’s face. Terrifying thoughts appeared in his mind… If I go out drinking, maybe I’ll run into Evangelin. But I do want to try drinking.

The mystics stepped onboard the carriage, Rouge told Olivia their destination through a small window.

  “Right, before I forget, here!”

Ms. Snow handed a pendant to Magician. There was a see through crystal monocle hanging on a chain necklace.

“While Dowsing Rod Divination is mostly used to find a location, it can be used to find people and other entities.

Pendants are one of the more difficult mediums to use for this specific divination method.

But because we can’t see the spirits with our bare eyes, we have to use another method to see or locate them, divination.

Using a crystal monocle pendant with dowsing rod divination is one of the most effective methods.”

Mr. Magician nodded along to Ms. Snow’s explanation. With his limited knowledge of mysticism, he didn’t know that other mediums could be used outside of the intended medium for divination.

His mind started to wander… I wonder which mediums I can use for other divinations.

Rouge patted Magician’s shoulder shocking him back to reality.

“Prove that you deserve that advance pay.”

  “Yes!”

Though scared, Magician was excited for his first mission. Silence enveloped the inside of the carriage. The silver moon watched over the city as the mystics travelled to their destination.

  …

After finishing a fight. The man floating in space looked at his defeated opponent with a blank expression.

He turned around and started flying towards a distance star as he continued to reminisce… Was that the start to Magician? Judgement should had warned me. Good thing he proved to be useful.
