Alice shook her head, disoriented and confused. She slowly got up on her feet, her body still feeling the effects of the fall from Dark Elara's portal. She tiredly looked over to see a present beneath a Christmas tree. Then she looked further to her right to see a pale-skinned girl with reindeer ears and horns on her head eating the cookies on a table and sipping the milk in the tall glass beside the cookies. Only after finishing and preparing to leave did the reindeer girl notice Alice catching her in the act. Instead of being alarmed and fleeing the scene like most reindeer folk would, she approached Alice with intrigue, her gaze curious.
Alice blinked at the pale reindeer girl, still groggy from what had just happened. "Uh... hey?" she mumbled, rubbing her head. "Did you, did you just eat all those cookies?"
The reindeer girl smirked, wiping a crumb from her lip with a slender finger. "Guilty," she said in a smooth, lilting voice. Her golden eyes sparkled mischievously as she tilted her head. "But they were left out for me... right? That’s how it works?"
Alice frowned slightly. “I mean… maybe? But usually the cookies are for Santa…”
The girl laughed, a soft, chiming sound like frost cracking under moonlight.
“Santa?” She stepped closer, brushing snowy white strands of hair behind one pointed ear. “Honey, I’m who you leave them for now.”
She leaned in slightly, voice dropping to a teasing whisper:
“Call me Noel.”
Alice watched Noel with a mix of confusion and amusement. This was definitely not a traditional Santa's helper.
"Noel, like the Christmas carol?" she asked, a slight smile tugging at her lips. "You seem a bit...young to be the big guy in red."
Noel grinned, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Oh, honey, age is nothing but a number after the first couple centuries." She winked, then looked Alice up and down. "Plus, I've got the most important qualification of all…”
Alice's eyes widened slightly at the implication. "And what's that?" she asked, a mix of amusement and suspicion in her voice.
Noel leaned in closer, her breath cool like winter air. Her golden eyes gleamed with confidence as she said, "I bring chaos, just like Christmas night."
She stepped back with a playful spin, snowflakes swirling around her feet even though they were indoors. “The old Saint’s retired. Too soft for this world now.” She gestured to the empty plate and glass. “I prefer my presents... eaten.”
Then her gaze sharpened, curious again, and she tilted her head at Alice.
“But what about you? Why are you here… all alone… on someone else’s holiday?”
Alice found herself caught off guard by Noel's words. The way she spoke, the hint of mystery in her gaze... this was not the typical holiday cheer she'd expected. But there was something about Noel's confidence, her edge of danger, that intrigued her.
"I'm not exactly here by choice," she admitted, her voice edged with a hint of hesitation. "Dark Elara brought me here as... a toy, of sorts."
Noel's head tilted slightly, her eyes fixed on Alice. There was a flicker of understanding...even concern in her gaze.
"Dark Elara?" Noel repeated slowly, her voice dropping an octave. The air around her grew colder, frost creeping subtly across the floorboards.
She stepped closer, this time without playfulness, her reindeer horns casting long, sharp shadows against the wall.
"She brought you here… and left you unguarded?"
A beat of silence.
Then, a dangerous smile curled on Noel’s lips.
"Foolish.”
Alice felt a shiver run down her spine at Noel's change in tone. The cold in the air was nearly tangible... and the warning in her words hit hard.
"That's right," she said quietly. "Dark Elara left me unguarded. Probably thought I'd be too scared to try anything."
If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
Noel's smile only widened. "Oh, honey," she purred. "Looks can be so... deceiving."
Alice nodded, then thought for a moment, her eyes widening in realization as she pointed out: "Wait, I can understand you...does that mean my 'Sanity Index' is close to yours or something...? I'm just learning about it.”
Noel's eyes widened slightly at Alice's realization, her gaze sharpening with intrigue. She circled around Alice, studying her closely.
"Ah, so you're new to the concept," she said thoughtfully. "You see, as an individual who has gained permanent residence in Euphoria, I can understand people of all Sanity Indices."
She stopped in front of Alice again, her golden eyes scanning her face for something only she could see.
"But you... You're holding it together well... for now.”
"That's why you can understand me," Noel continued, a hint of admiration in her voice. "You're not completely broken, still got a spark in you."
She reached out, gently tapping Alice’s chest with one red frost-kissed finger. Alice could now see up close how her extremities are red as crimson in opposition to her otherwise pale skin; a feature unique to her.
"But that spark? It’s flickering."
A hush fell between them, just the faint hum of Euphoria’s warped reality pulsing in the distance. Then Noel leaned in, voice dropping to a whisper:
“If this ‘Dark Elara’ thinks she can claim you just because your mind is unraveling… she clearly doesn’t know me.”
There was a fierce protectiveness in Noel's eyes that sent a shiver down Alice's spine. The realization that Noel saw through Dark Elara's intentions was both terrifying and... strangely comforting. Someone here was on her side.
"So you think I have a chance," Alice said quietly, hope threading her voice. "You think I might not end up... completely broken like the others."
Noel gave a short, sharp nod, her expression stern. "We all face that risk here. But you... you feel different. Stronger. How in-tune with yourself are you..." she dragged out as if fishing for a name.
"Ah, um...Alice, sorry. But to answer your question... I just...exist, I guess. Always have.”
Noel nodded, contemplating Alice's answer. "Existing," she repeated, the word strangely solemn coming from her lips.
There was a flicker in her eyes, something Alice couldn't quite place. Was it... understanding? Sorrow? The reindeer girl quickly masked it with a smile, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. "Existing is a powerful thing, sweetheart," she finally said, her voice softer than before.
She leaned against the edge of an ornate table, twirling a candy cane in slender fingers.
"But living, truly living? That's something far different. I think you've wandered through life making no attachments with anyone because get this: it's easy for you to involve yourself in the affairs of others, but you never once stopped to ask how Alice is doing.”
Alice felt the words land like a punch to the chest.
She stared at Noel, lips parting slightly, but no sound came out.
How is Alice doing?
She hadn't asked that in... forever.
Always helping others. Jumping into fights. Standing by Elara, Zalgo, Rachel, everyone else, without ever stopping to check if she was okay. If she was scared. If she was tired. If she was...breaking.
Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes, but she blinked them back hard.
"I... I don’t even know anymore," she whispered, voice cracking just a little. "I've been so focused on everyone else... I forgot how to look inward."
Noel didn’t smile this time.
Instead, she stepped forward and gently placed a frost-cool hand on Alice’s shoulder.
“Then maybe,”
she said softly,
“that’s where your strength begins.”
Alice looked up at Noel, the weight of her words settling deep in her chest. For so long, she'd felt like just a supporting player in everyone else's stories, always there to help, to fight, to comfort...
But never to be seen.
And now, standing here in this twisted winter dream with a reindeer girl who claimed to be Christmas itself... she finally felt noticed.
Noel gave her shoulder a small squeeze before stepping back.
“We don’t have time for full healing,” she said, tone shifting, sharp again, but not unkind. “Dark Elara will come looking. And when she does…”
She pulled two shimmering items from thin air, one: an ornate silver bell etched with ancient runes; the other: a dagger made of black ice that hummed faintly.
“…you’ll need more than courage.”
Alice’s breath caught.
“You’re giving me these?”
Noel smirked. “Call it an early present.”
Then she leaned in one last time, close enough that frost kissed Alice’s cheek, and whispered:
“Now go be your own damn hero.”
A fire lit on Alice's eyes, determined, strong. But beneath it, a vulnerability flickered that only Noel could see.
She took the bell and the dagger, clutching them tightly. "I will," she promised, her voice steady despite the lingering pain in her heart. "I'll fight, for myself… and for my friends."
Noel nodded, a small, genuine smile on her lips. "That's what I thought," she said. "You got this, honey.”
Alice steeled herself, her grip on dagger and bell strong. "Thanks, Noel," she said softly, feeling a new resolve settle in her gut. "For everything."
Noel nodded. "No problem," she replied, her tone surprisingly serious. The cold in the air seemed to intensify, as if the world itself was preparing for this battle. "But don't thank me yet... we're just getting started.”
Alice gave her a nod of understanding, her heart pounding in anticipation. She may be on the brink of breaking… but as long as she had friends like Noel, and a little bit of holiday magic, she still had a chance.
"We'll make it," she said firmly, more to herself than to Noel. "We have to."
And just then...Alice's Connexus began to glow brightly in her pocket. She took it out and opened it to be met with a message showcasing a pivotal event: her very first genuine connection with another person.
Noel noticed the glow of the Connexus and smiled faintly. "Looks like you've made some progress," she said, her voice low. "Connection is the key—in every sense."
Alice glanced at the device, a mixture of hope and uncertainty in her eyes. "Yeah," she replied quietly. "I guess it is..."
Then, realizing the gravity of their situation, she glanced back up at Noel, her expression hardening. "I won't let Dark Elara have her way," she declared, her voice full of determination. "I will get back.”
