Chapter 25: The Easy Job That Wasn’t

Team Echo gathered around the assignment board, examining the new C-rank postings.

After their promotion and the introduction of mandatory observation drones, they needed something straightforward to adjust to the increased scrutiny.

"This one looks manageable," Marc said, pointing to a listing near the bottom of the screen. "Small containment rift in the western industrial zone. Basic clearing operation, no special parameters."

  Magi studied the contract details.

The rift had appeared three days ago in an abandoned warehouse. Initial scans showed minimal dimensional instability and no immediate threat. A textbook C-rank assignment.

"Low monster density according to the scout report," he noted. "Estimated completion time under two hours."

Layla crossed her arms. "Seems boring after the bone dragon."

"Boring is good," Eli countered, adjusting her pack. "We could use a simple job to test how these drones affect our workflow."

Jax nodded toward the ceiling where their assigned Observer hung motionless, its cameras tracking their movements. The small metallic sphere had been following them since they entered the Guild hall this morning.

"Might as well get used to our new friend," he said.

Marc confirmed the assignment on his Guild tablet.

The Observer's lights shifted from yellow to green, indicating it had registered their mission parameters. A soft chime sounded as the contract was finalized.

"Mission accepted," announced a neutral voice from the drone. "Transmitting data to Guild Command."

Magi shouldered his pack. He'd packed lightly. Basic medical supplies, water, and a small notepad. The others carried their usual gear: Layla's greatsword, Jax's daggers, Eli's staff, and Marc's tactical equipment.

"Let's go," Marc said. "Transport leaves in fifteen minutes."

  ***

The warehouse stood alone amid crumbling industrial buildings.

Its metal walls had rusted in patches, and most of its windows were broken. A Guild barrier surrounded the perimeter, keeping civilians at a safe distance.

"Standard approach," Marc said as they prepared at the entrance. "Layla takes point. Jax and I follow. Eli provides ranged support. Magi stays back to manage supplies and offer support where needed."

The drone hovered above them, recording every word and movement.

Magi examined the rift from outside, but something felt off.

Most rifts pulsed with unstable energy, their edges fluctuating as they struggled to maintain connection between dimensions.

This one appeared unusually stable. Its blue-purple glow remained constant, its edges sharply defined.

"The rift pattern seems atypical," he mentioned.

Marc glanced at it. "How so?"

"Too stable. Most rifts this size have visible energy fluctuations."

The team leader frowned. "The report classified it as a standard containment rift. Nothing unusual."

"Proceed with caution," suggested the drone. "Observation noted in mission log."

Layla rolled her eyes at the mechanical intrusion. "Let's get this done."

She pushed through the barrier, and the team entered the warehouse. The rift hung suspended in the center of the open space, casting eerie light across the concrete floor. No sounds came from within its swirling depths.

  "Too quiet," Jax whispered.

Marc signaled for them to form a perimeter around the rift. The standard protocol was to secure the area before entering the dimensional tear.

Magi circled to the left, keeping his distance. His instincts told him something was wrong.

Most rifts radiated some form of environmental effect. Heat, cold, altered gravity, atmospheric changes. This one had none. The air remained still and undisturbed.

"No signatures detected," reported the drone, hovering near the ceiling. "Proceed with standard entry protocol."

Layla approached the rift with her greatsword ready. "Going in."

She stepped through the dimensional barrier, vanishing into the swirl of energy. Jax followed immediately after, then Marc. Eli hesitated, glancing back at Magi.

  "You coming?"

He nodded and followed her through.

  ***

The interior of the rift resembled a vast stone chamber. Columns stretched upward into darkness, supporting a ceiling too high to see.

The floor was polished marble, unmarked by scratches or wear. Everything was perfectly preserved, as if newly built.

"No monsters," Layla said, lowering her sword slightly.

"Stay alert," Marc warned. "They could be hiding."

The Observer drone passed through the rift behind them, its cameras rotating to capture the environment.

"Unusual rift configuration detected," it announced. "Architecture indicates possible intelligence behind construction."

Magi studied the chamber. Most rifts contained chaotic landscapes, distorted versions of Earth's environments or alien terrain formed by random dimensional energy.

This place had been designed with purpose. The columns followed precise mathematical spacing, and patterns carved into the floor formed complex geometric designs.

"Something built this," he said quietly.

The team spread out, moving cautiously through the chamber. Their footsteps echoed against the stone walls. No other sounds disturbed the silence.

After several minutes of exploration, they reached the far end of the room. A massive stone doorway stood before them, sealed shut with no visible mechanism to open it.

"No rift core detected," Marc noted. "We should have encountered something by now."

Jax pressed his hand against the door. "There might be more beyond this."

Suddenly, a low rumble shook the chamber. The team tensed, weapons ready. The marble floor beneath them began to glow with a soft blue light, illuminating the geometric patterns.

"Movement detected," warned the drone. "Multiple signatures approaching."

From behind the columns emerged a dozen crystalline constructs.

They resembled humanoid figures made of translucent blue crystal, moving with mechanical precision.

They carried no weapons but advanced in perfect formation toward Echo Squad.

  "Defensive positions!" Marc shouted.

Layla charged forward, her greatsword slicing through the first construct. It shattered into fragments that dissolved into light.

Jax darted between two others, his daggers finding vulnerable points in their crystalline structure.

Eli summoned a gust of wind that knocked several constructs backward, giving Marc space to unleash a bolt of lightning that fractured three more.

Magi remained at the rear, watching the pattern of attack. The constructs showed no fear or self-preservation instinct. They moved with singular purpose.

More emerged from behind the columns, replacing those that fell. Despite Echo Squad's efforts, they were gradually being surrounded.

"We need to find the rift core," Marc called out. "These will keep coming otherwise."

Magi studied the glowing patterns on the floor. They seemed to be flowing toward the sealed doorway, energy gathering around its frame.

"The door is the key," he said. "The energy is concentrating there."

As they fought their way closer to the doorway, the constructs became more aggressive.

One caught Layla's arm, its touch burning through her armor. Another nearly trapped Jax against a column before Eli blasted it away.

Marc reached the door first, examining the frame. "No obvious mechanism. Might need some force."

"Allow me," Magi said, stepping forward.

He placed his palm against the center of the door and channeled Basic Earth. He felt for the structure's resonance, the natural frequency that would allow him to manipulate its material.

Before he could apply pressure, the entire chamber shuddered violently. The constructs froze in place, then collapsed into piles of inert crystal.

"What was that?" Layla asked, lowering her sword.

The geometric patterns on the floor flared bright blue, then began fading rapidly. The columns started dissolving from the top down, particles of stone floating upward and disappearing.

"The rift is collapsing," Marc warned. "Everyone back to the entrance!"

They turned and ran toward the point where they'd entered. The chamber continued dissolving around them, the floor disappearing mere steps behind their feet.

"Dimensional collapse accelerating," the drone announced, speeding ahead of them. "Estimated time to complete dissolution: thirty seconds."

They reached the entry point as the last of the columns vanished. The swirling energy of the rift portal was shrinking rapidly.

  "Go!" Marc shouted.

One by one they leaped through. Eli first, then Jax, Layla, and Marc. Magi was last, diving through the narrowing aperture just as it contracted to nothing behind him.

  ***

They landed in a heap on the warehouse floor. Where the rift had been, nothing remained. Not even the residual energy signature that typically lingered after a collapse.

"Everyone okay?" Marc asked, helping Layla to her feet.

The team checked themselves and each other. Besides minor injuries from the crystal constructs, they were unharmed.

"What happened in there?" Jax asked, sheathing his daggers.

The Observer drone hovered above them, its lights flashing as it processed data. "Analyzing rift dissolution pattern. Anomalous closure detected. Standard protocol violated."

Magi examined the empty space where the rift had been. Normally when a rift collapsed, it left behind dimensional residue. Trace energy that could be measured and cataloged. This space was completely clean, as if the rift had never existed.

"No breakthrough," Eli noted. "No monsters escaped. Nothing came through."

  "Just gone," Layla added.

Marc's Guild tablet chimed. He pulled it out and frowned at the screen. "That's odd."

  "What is it?" Magi asked.

"Guild notification." Marc turned the tablet so they could see. "The rift has been flagged as 'Resolved Permanently.'"

The Observer drone emitted a series of beeps as it received the same update. "Mission parameters updated. Rift designation: permanently resolved. Classification: anomalous closure."

Magi studied the notification. Rifts were never classified as "permanently resolved." They could be contained, suppressed, or temporarily sealed, but dimensional tears always left weak points that might reopen under the right conditions.

"That's not how rifts work," Eli said, echoing his thoughts.

Marc's frown deepened. "That's not possible."

The drone continued recording as Echo Squad gathered their equipment. Its cameras focused particularly on Magi, who stood staring at the empty space, his expression thoughtful.

Something had closed that rift completely, erased it from existence. And whatever had done it had left no trace behind.

As they left the warehouse, Magi felt a strange certainty that they'd witnessed something important. Not just an anomaly, but a deliberate act. Someone… or something, had wanted that rift closed permanently.

And he suspected they would want to know who.
