A blaring, red pulse dragged me back to consciousness. My tongue felt like sandpaper, and my throat cracked with the desperate, desert-dry thirst that comes from losing a day to the dark.
Deep within the Sanctum, the Core choked. Its steady, rhythmic hum had degraded into a mechanical death rattle, vibrating through the stone floor and traveling straight up into my boots. Overhead, the blue barrier flickered violently, bleeding streaks of sickly yellow light that cast long, bruised shadows across the ruins.

Where did all my time go??
My broken body had forced me to recover. I had no sense of time, I guess I had to have slept for 23 hours. Now, the scrumple of fuel offered less than five minutes of protection against the acidic mist creeping back to the edges of the threshold.
Outside the dying dome, mist curled around the ruins, carrying the thick scent of decay. A wet, distinct snap echoed from the treeline—the distinct sound of bone shearing under pressure.
The Grid expanded outward.

The Wolf had returned, circling a colossal gleaming shadow near the riverbank.
[ Target: Gullinbursti (Golden Scavenger) | Status: Critical / Bleeding ]
Four hundred pounds of muscle lay trapped in the mud. The anomaly lay in its hide. Even coated in sludge and blood, the beast revered a coat of jagged, overlapping metal layered over mass.
Lunging forward with explosive speed, the Alpha clamped its powerful jaws directly onto the Boar's neck. The strange metal scales crumpled and shattered under the crushing hydraulic pressure of the wolf's fangs. With a violent toss of its head, the predator flung the dying Boar across the mud.
Sent flying by the impact, the four-hundred-pound carcass crashed to a halt right at the edge of my sanctuary, its momentum stopped only by the flickering blue threshold.
The Alpha stalked forward. Yellow optics locked onto my position through the translucent shield, while a wet snout pressed against the dome, actively testing the failing resistance. The barrier hissed, sparking violently under the beast's aggressive weight as the creature began a slow, methodical pace around the perimeter. It can't possibly want more food with that outside...are you hunting for sport?

I needed to act fast.
Creeping to the very edge of the threshold placed me mere inches from the pacing beast. The predator snapped its jaws at the blue light, catching the scent of my sweat. Dropping to my knees beside the boar carcass, a section had landed inside the barrier. I targeted the mangled, exposed tissue where the Alpha had already crushed the golden armor. The Scrap Shiv lacked the edge to pierce metal, but it sawed frantically through the ruined state of the beast's neck. The hairs on my arms stood up as I did my best to ignore the looming beast watching me steal a chunk of its prize.
A hefty section of the hide ripped free.
Fifty pounds of dead weight draped over my arm like a lead apron. Every time the interwoven fabric shifted, the bristles brushed against each other with the sound of sharpening knives, generating a low, localized static charge.
Grabbing the solid oak club from the floor with shaking hands, I whipped the golden hide around the timber, pulling the slack tight to create a thick spiral of highly conductive scales.

I swallowed my nerve and focused.
Rapid backward steps put distance between myself and the threshold. My heels struck the stone plinth of the dying generator, which leaked wild arcs of raw, ungrounded Flux into the air—a live wire searching desperately for a ground.
[ Time Remaining: 00:00:00 ]
The barrier shattered into dissipating sparks.
The Alpha launched itself through the threshold, its jaws opening wide to tear out my throat.
[ System Ability: Grid Overlay ]
The wireframe stripped away the wet fur mid-flight.

Rusted iron plates sat bolted directly into the beast's spine.
Thrusting the gold-wrapped club behind me, I drove the tip straight into the leaking energy field. The Gold Mantle drank the Flux. A blinding arc of blue-white Flux surged from the makeshift electric rod, racing down the conductive scales wrapped around the wood. Lunging forward to meet the beast, I thrust the club like a spear into the wolf's path.
Ballistic momentum committed the Alpha to the trajectory. Its jaws clamped firmly onto the gold-wrapped timber.
Conducting through the wet mouth, voltage rushed down the throat to arc directly into the iron plates bolted to the beast's spine.
Its back arched violently as the electricity bypassed the organic tissue entirely, cooking the nervous system from the inside out. The distinct smell of cooked meat and burning hair exploded through the ruin. The iron plates on its back glowed cherry-red, heating under the powerful surge of current. The beast hung in the air for a terrifying second, suspended purely by muscle spasms as its eyes rolled back into its body.
Then, the makeshift rod died.
A sharp, deafening crack echoed through the ruins as the connection severed.
With a final, residual nerve firing, the Wolf dropped into the mud, smoke pouring from its mouth and the cherry-red rivets in its back before it went completely still.
[ Target Eliminated: Shadow-Mane Alpha (Level 12) ]
Dropping the smoking club to the stone, I checked out my forearm. The electrical discharge had flash-burned the skin, singeing the hair to ash and leaving my fingers numb. Exhaustion forced my body to slump against the pedestal as ragged gasps filled the silence. The beast possessed fearsome jaws and armored plating, but raw power was not solely enough to survive here.
The reprieve lasted exactly three seconds.
Rolling over the threshold, ominous and thick yellow, the Miasma crept into the sanctuary, carrying the stench of industrial rot. With the barrier dormant and the fire decayed into ash, the poison began to fill the room. Can I PLEASE catch a break?!
Half in the mud and half over the threshold of the barrier, the Golden Boar carcass rested like a morbid anchor. The Core needed it. I pressed my shoulder against the flank, desperate to feed the furnace, but...nothing. I'm not sure what I expected. The four-hundred-pound mass of dead weight refused to budge. Muscles burned and boots slid in the slick mud.
Collapsing against the beast, my lungs burned as the toxic gas hit my throat. Suddenly, a translucent blue window hovered in my peripheral vision—a delayed reward from the grueling execution of the kill.

[ Attributes: Strength | Agility | Intelligence | Tenacity ]
The glowing interface hung in the toxic air. While coughing on the Miasma, the "easy" option presented itself. Dumping points into Strength would grant the raw power to haul the boar like a sack of grain.
But my mind drifted to the slums. I knew big men. I knew the High Lord's enforcers who possessed muscle thick enough to crush a skull. The wolf itself was incredibly strong, but it wasn't enough. When the winter hit, when the barrier failed and the Miasma rolled in thick, their strength bought them nothing. They froze and rotted just like the rest of us.
To survive in the exhaust of the world, you don't need to be strong. You need to be stubborn. You need to outlast.
Locking my focus onto the interface, I made the decision.
[ Attribute Assigned: Tenacity 2 -> 11 ]
The System initiated a violent chemical tightening. A cold pressure seized my veins, shrinking my skin and compressing it against muscle with the agonizing grip of a vice.
In the flickering light, my hands took on a dull, matte-gray sheen as the System aggressively dredged the iron from my blood to sequence it into my dermal layer. My mouth flooded with the overwhelming taste of metal.
Tapping my knuckles against the stone floor produced a sharp, loud crack identical to dense timber striking rock. Stiff, iron-laced fingers flexed in the gloom. My joints protested, trading resistance on my mobility in exchange for the newly forged durability. I suppose I can balance this with agility. I can make this work.
Turning back to the Boar, the problem shifted. Maybe I should have taken the easy road, iron skin isn't going to help me here...I grabbed the sturdy club and wedged the un-singed end deep under the Boar's flank. Using my newly hardened, cast-iron body as an immovable anchor, I threw my weight against the lever.
The thick mud sucked and popped. The chunky carcass listed upward, dislodging from the rut. The moment the smooth golden scales hit the wet, downward-sloping mud of the sanctuary floor, friction vanished. Hm, I'm not afraid to admit I was wrong.
The massive carcass hydroplaned across the sludge, picking up momentum on the light incline until it collided with the base of the pedestal with a wet metallic ring.
One final push to connect the beast with the intake bowl drove spikes of agony through my collarbone.
The stone reacted instantly by encompassing the whole beast. The solid basalt of the bowl engorged on the boar like disturbed mercury, losing its rigid structure to become a viscous, hungry slurry that rose up to wrap around the golden carcass like a blooming flower of gray sludge.
There was no smoke or fire. Just the wet, pulling sound of suction as the pedestal swallowed the creature whole. Shell, meat, and bone dragged down into the subterranean throat of the machine, shaking the floor as the digestion sequence initialized deep underground.

The azure dome snapped back into existence, violently pushing the toxic Miasma away. The fire in the center of the room flared back to life.
Safe. For now. Just don't sleep for 34 hours. I think I can manage that.
The smoking corpse of the Alpha awaited harvest. The electricity had cooked the meat, and the structure remained intact. I took the Scrap Shiv and went to work beside the head, pulling the glowing yellow eye free before severing the thick muscle of the thigh joint. Finally, a patch of the light-drinking fur peeled from the flank.

The wet fur slid into my pocket alongside the cataloged resources. My knees finally gave way, dropping my exhausted frame next to the fire.
The adrenaline bled out entirely. The humming barrier glowed overhead. The Grid Overlay flickered in my mind's eye, tracing the blue lines of the sanctuary to make the heat shielding and the perimeter visible.
Eyes closed, the schematic floated in the dark.
The raw materials to turn this engine into a fortress sat firmly in my grasp.
