Aldric Sorn was forty-three years old, built like a man who had spent twenty of those years in active military service and the remaining three trying unsuccessfully to become less intimidating. He had a scar that ran from his left jaw to the corner of his mouth — a gift from a monster in the western territories during his final campaign — and close-cropped grey hair that had gone fully silver at thirty-eight without consulting him. His hands were a soldier's hands: broad, scarred, capable of violence and, when necessary, of extraordinary patience.
The Duke had appointed him to the classroom three years ago, after an axe to the knee ended his field career with the blunt finality that battlefield injuries specialised in. Now he stood in the silence that followed the end of his account and let his eyes move slowly across their faces.
A girl of seven was pressing her lips together very hard in the way children did when deciding whether crying was acceptable. The boy beside her, eight years old and already convinced of his own toughness, stared at his desk with the concentrated blankness of someone feeling something he had no vocabulary for yet. Two of the younger children had moved closer together on their bench without seeming to notice — the unconscious pull of small people toward other small people when the world reveals how large and terrible it can be.
Aldric's gaze moved to the back row.
And stopped.

What people said about Voryn was harder to articulate than a girl calming a monster or a boy memorising rune forms.
Aldric had dismissed it, when he first heard it. He was not a man given to the poetic. He dealt in what could be measured and tested and confirmed in the field. But three years of teaching Voryn Insheart had done something to his skepticism that he had not fully admitted to himself until this exact moment.
Standing at the front of the classroom, looking at a five year old boy who had just asked whether a dying planet's heart had been lonely — Aldric Sorn felt the truth of it settle into him with the slow, heavy certainty of something that had always been true and was only now being acknowledged.

He thought about light in a dark sky. About ten children born in its wake. About a boy who looked at the idea of a lonely meteor and felt something in it that twenty years of scholarship had apparently missed entirely.
Then he picked up his notes and left.
