Chapter 65

  Veronique and Rhea’s Temporary Room

After another nightmare Veronique was laying on her bed with the toy labyrinth in her hands just focusing on keeping the marble visible with her mana, while Bos was sprawled over her legs deeply asleep.

Ivan had the toy repaired, even if he would get quite upset if he heard Veronique referring to it as a toy, the glass panel had been replaced and reinforced with a skill so that it couldn’t be broken again so easily.

“Focus on making the marble barely visible and don’t try to make it move by yourself!” the man had recommended her and Veronique had been doing just that, even if it felt way harder then just pouring everything in one go.

It was as if she was letting a small stream out when she got a full raging ocean behind her.

Ever since Veronique had started to room with Rhea being alone wasn’t an option and as of now she was really wished she could be.

Not because Rhea was particularly annoying, honestly she was quite a well behaved child and Veronique had meet some real monsters in her other time, but the redhead wanted to test something and, if it worked, it would be for the best if there weren’t any impressionable children around to get traumatized.

To be frank it would be a disaster if anyone was around her.

Her theory was to try and make one of her hallucinations visible using the same method as she was using right now with the marble, if it succeeded then she was right and those were part of her mysterious second skill, but if it didn’t then she was simply crazy, probably schizophrenic or something.

While she could try her idea now that Rhea was asleep Veronique didn’t want to risk it, regardless she was going to get a room after the Banquet so there was no rush.

However if there was no one else present how would she even know if it worked? As much as she wanted to test her theory there were way more cons then pros to it, so maybe it wasn’t such a bright idea in the first place.

Veronique put the labyrinth away with a sigh and tried to get some sleep, which hopefully wouldn’t end up with her having another nightmare about being locked up in the Asylum.

‘At the least I got breakfast to look up to’ they were going to serve what she usually got in the East Wing, she wasn’t that delusional to think the Duke would like it after being served prime dishes all of his life, but at the least she will get to eat it one more time.

  Dinning Room

The next morning luckily there was no Ivan in sight, they probably must have got him to have his meals with the staff to avoid other incidents, so all that was different was the kind of food that had been served.

“It’s a bit bland” the Duke commented, which didn’t surprise Veronique

“It’s not bad” the Duchess had been more charitable with it, but it didn’t look like she particularly enjoyed it

“I hate it” of course Alexander had to be completely negative about it

“I like it that it fills me up” Rhea had said, making her opinion clear “I still feel hungry with the other food”

“That’s because we would get fat if we ate so much everyday” Alexander had intercepted, which the redhead choose to ignore even if the comment irritated her

“What do you think Veronique?” the Duke had called for her opinion

“I enjoy it, it’s like Rhea said, what we usually get isn’t filling and the taste is quite enjoyable once you get used to it” Veronique was truthful about it “the usual food is so savory anything else tastes bland even if it isn’t”

“Perhaps we can work on a compromise, I will speak with Chef Bernard about it” the Duke ended up saying, giving Veronique hope that she would get to eat more like this.

  Corridor

The redhead didn’t think there would have been any other big events before the banquet but she was proven wrong, apparently there was going to be some sort of ceremony and Kain was at the center of it.

Veronique’s first thought was that he was going to receive a medal over his service, but in truth he was getting knighted and she was invited to witness it, along with the rest of the Aurelia’s family of course.

“I don’t understand I thought Kain was already a knight” she had asked Lucia, hoping to get a clarification, but she had forgot she wasn’t alone

“He wished” Noah had intercepted the question sounding outright irritated “one isn’t really a Knight till they get Commander Regulus’s acknowledgment, it is common knowledge” the veiled jab calling Veronique ignorant didn’t go unnoticed by anyone, except maybe Rhea because she was still too innocent to catch up on those

“Oh is it so? So Noah, I bet you know all sorts of other stuff” Veronique had said faking innocence and hoping the guard would just get the flattery and start behaving

“Of course I know everything, I studied and worked hard for my position” Noah declared “it wasn’t handed to me” he threw another jab

“Noah” one of the guards on Rhea’s side had warned him, if Veronique remembered it correctly his name was Vincent, not that he bothered introducing himself to her, his name had simply popped out when she inquired on the guard that died in the Scorpion attack.

  His name was Daryl.

The redhead understood that Noah and Vincent were close with Daryl, probably Kain’s ceremony was a sour spot for them due to the circumstances that lead to it, so maybe the right thing would be to let those comments wash over her and not ignite an argument.

Unfortunately Noah had decided to open his big mouth while they were in crowded environment, many members of the staff were heading in their same direction, so she couldn’t just let it go.

‘My reputation is already shit without circulating voices about me being stupid as rocks’ she had thought with a twitch of her eye ‘if I don’t start hitting back they are all going to walk over me and make my life difficult’

  She had to respond.
