Chapter 3

Once Miri had her stats set up, the next thing to check was her inventory. However, she had a bit of trouble figuring out how to access it at the moment. Usually, in a game like this, you simply press a button to access the menu. How do you do that when you’re literally in the game itself?

However, as soon as she had that thought, a minor spike of pain started forming on her temples. She placed her hand on her left temple to try to quell the pain only for the contact to cause a pale-blue holographic screen to appear in front of her. Tapping her temple again and again caused the menu to disappear and reappear again, sort of like an on-and-off switch. Not only that, she realized she could do it with both her left and right temples. A convenient feature to have for sure.

On the screen was a menu of some kind, the same menu she saw in the game as well, one where she was able to interact like a floating touchscreen.

Swiping to the “Inventory” tab of the menu, she saw that she had 5 healing potions and 100 gold, a great thing to have when starting off. Then, swiping once again to the “Equipment” tab, she saw the spells that she had available to her. In this game, spells could only be performed if you were equipped with a spell rune, with each spell rune used to perform a specific spell.

Currently, she saw that she had two spells equipped at the moment:

Starlight Bolt [Rank 1]: Fires a single magical projectile at an enemy.

  Mana cost: 7

  Requirement: Fire 7, Air 3

Crescent Arc [Rank 1]: Fires an arc of magical energy that spreads outward in front of you.

  Mana cost: 9

  Requirement: Fire 8, Water 3

If she remembered correctly, this game provides each player with a different set of spells based on what stats they have. Then, out of a specific stat configuration, the system would randomly pick two spells out of a pre-selected roster of spells, making it so that each playthrough would provide a player with a different set of starting spells even if they had the same stat allocation. Miri suspected that this feature was designed to increase the game’s replayability.

Both “Starlight Bolt” and “Crescent Arc” were decent spells, not great but also not terrible. From her previous experience, “Starlight Bolt” was good against single target enemies at medium range while “Crescent Arc” was good against groups of enemies in front of you. She suspected that she’d probably have to resort to using them for now until she could find more spells during her adventure, either through looting or buying from a wandering merchant. In other words, a fairly standard run of a fantasy RPG.

After equipping them onto her spell slots, Miri proceeded to step out of the door of the church, where she got to see the world outside. Even now, the sense of exhilaration was swelling up within her, propelling her to venture into the great unknown.
