Chapter 22: Static In The Veins

Chapter 22: Static In The Veins

The freight lift shuddered to a halt three levels below official maintenance routes, into a section of Emberfall no longer listed on public maps.

Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, flickering against cracked bulkheads and repurposed storage bays. Graffiti covered half the corridor: old miner tags, Dominion glyphs half-scrubbed, half-celebrated.

  Three figures waited.

The first was a freight tech on paper, dressed in coveralls stained with plasma sealant. His left eye flickered with the faint glow of an outdated tactical implant.

The second was a nurse. Real credentials. Real shift at the colony’s central medbay. She tapped her stylus once, twice, against her datapad as if rehearsing a heartbeat.

The third wore no disguise at all. Just shadows and silence.

“Elyss Valen is active,” the nurse said first.

“Good,” murmured the tech. “The pace quickens.”

“It’s too fast,” the nurse warned. “Velstrat is already agitating the outer guilds. There’s noise in the observatory sectors.”

“Let them fight over the surface. Our roots are deeper.”

The third figure finally spoke, a voice smooth, dry, and utterly calm. “Orders?”

A long pause followed. Then the tech removed a slim card from his vest and inserted it into a junction port on the wall. The lights dimmed. Something deeper than electricity buzzed beneath the floor.

“Stage two,” the tech said. “Watch the repair crews. Follow the data lines. CAPRA is unstable. The artifact is the flare, but Valtor is the burn.”

“And the others?” the nurse asked.

“Divide them,” the voice in the shadows replied. “Fear is better than force. For now.”
