Chapter6: travels and maidens

The next day was filled with packing and tearful goodbyes. My mother hugged me hard.

“Please come visit as often as you can.” Mother can be so emotional when she has the chance to. Looking at my father I said, “Please look after yourselves in my absence, I feel a strange era is upon us.” He smiled and said, “No problem kid remember who taught you how to fight.”

  ***

I gave my mother one last hug and began walking toward the town of Werow. Once I was out of view, I stored all my stuff in my travel pack into my alternate storage spell.

I would never tell them this, but I had secretly been travelling to Werow a while back and made it about half way, before teleporting back. So, I just teleported to the last destination I went to.

I started running along the road at a slight sprint, (what would probably be a full sprint to most) and I knew I would reach Werow by night fall. It would have been a few days to walk there.

As I ran, I took stock of the distance I was traveling in the back of my mind. I was keenly aware of my surroundings. It seemed after having downloaded all my old memories, I now had ample room to store extra information within the Advisers data banks. Which meant I could not only process more information, I could now also remember things more clearly.

I was on the good side when it came to finances, after creating and selling so many things in the forge at hearthsmeth. I need not worry about anything. When it came to prices, I did gain the ‘dangerous haggler’ skill, so even the prices were easier on my wallet so to speak.

The thing I was worried about was trying to keep out of trouble; I did not want to cause unnecessary death or injury.

Despite the adviser saying that I probably have more control over my power than I thought.

About 7 kilometres from Werow, I slowed down. There was a lot of carriages and I did not want to seem like a monster.

I started walking when I came into viewing distance of them. I still had a travel satchel at my side including a knife, just to look a bit more natural, and to discourage any misconceptions.

Werow might just be a town but it was bigger than hearthsmeth and had its own wall with sentry towers. The reason it existed was more because of the Bocwusop plant that only grew in the Heroes frozen tundra to the south. It was a plant that, when squeezed, tastes like lemonade. But that was not why it was so popular. It was because the squeezed drink can never become warm, it is a literal forever cold drink.

People near the cities of Norgan and Kulgran paid top money for it.

As such, merchants usually loved going there. The way the money system worked in this country was simple. Ten copper coins was one silver, ten silver was one gold and a hundred gold was one platinum.

Usually, only dukes and kings had that money. Platinum was rare to find.

As I slowly drew closer to the gates, I could hear some servants talking in a carriage, “Did you see that big damn dust cloud, could have sworn it was coming right at us.” “Yeah, and then it just vanished out of thin air.” “Quit, you two, we are close to the gates, and I need to concentrate on keeping these daft horses in check. I swear I am going to get new horses in town.”

Hmm, note to self probably ought to rather fly with my invisibility spell next time. I did not think they would have seen the dust cloud so far away.

As we entered the gate the guard stopped the man in the front, “what be your business in Werow.” “Buying and selling. Obviously, dullard.” The man in the front snapped back. He seemed very irritated over something.

As they were let in the guard looked me over and asked, almost bored. “What’s your business in Werow.” Ah so this was a mandatory question he had to ask.

“I want to become an adventurer.” He looked me up and down, he seemed about fifteen or sixteen. “Alright head in, if you want to get your visa and other papers done, I would suggest the guild, “

If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

He seemed nonchalant as he said that and I was ushered through. Werow looked quite nice inside, though not as grand as one would think.

It was mostly filled with shops and trade posts. I looked for an inn and as I looked, I saw the adventures guild office. I decided to go and have my paperwork and other stuff done first.

As I walked through the door, I was assailed with sounds and the smell of ale. Most of the people were drinking merely at the tables, it seems the adventurer’s guild also doubled as a tavern for the adventurers. I was paid no heed as I entered the office side.

There was an eighteen- or nineteen-year-old lady at the desk as I walk up to it. “Hi I’m Lucian and I am from near the town of Hearthsmeth.”

“Ah yes let me see.” she went back to some papers and then pulled forth a file which read Hearthsmeth. “State you full name please.” “Lucian Algrioth cergal.” I spoke. As I said it, she incanted a spell and the file sprung open to reveal my face as well as my birthday and all the other things you would find in an ID.

I was kind of surprized at this world’s governing system. I guess even dumb worlds can have smart leaders. “Okay please place your right hand on this page.” she indicated a page next to the Identity page. I complied, and it lit up. And turned green.

“Good, all in order as I lifted up my hand.” The machine next to me began whirring and out came a little card that looked almost transparent. On it there was my basic info printed. And she said, “Okay, anything else.”

“Yeah, I would like to join the adventurer’s guild.” She looked at me and smiled. “Then let me first explain the ranking system. Some people have difficulty remembering.

Everyone starts at F rank they may only take jobs of F, E or D rank. Or on special occasions an S rank, but that’s only if and S rank or higher team invites you, and then they are responsible for anything that happens to you.”

“You will also have to pay an entrance fee to join, but it is not too much. Only five copper coins. You will have your status and rank inputted on your identity card. Please do not lose it because you will have to pay a fine if you do.

You can gain rank by doing jobs above your rank and succeeding enough times, if you have a party that is a few ranks higher than you, that might make it faster. The guild quests are posted on the notice board. If you have any other questions please ask.”

She puts the card in another machine and it begins to whirr as well, next moment it pops out the bottom. She then gives it to me and I ask. ”Do you know a good inn I can sleep at?” I would recommend the starlight wanderer, just two blocks to the left and five blocks forward.” “Thank you.”

I walked out of the guild with my new ID card and started going in the direction she told me. I had paid the fee and I was now officially a rank F adventurer. I would obviously take rank D jobs but it was still a nice feeling.

  ***

As I move toward the inn, I hear a commotion inside. As I enter a man is screaming at a girl. She looked on the verge of tears. “What do you mean you lost it, I told you explicitly to not lose it.” She looked beat up her dress dishevelled “I told you I did not lose it, they robbed me. Cannot you see.”

“All I see is a dumb bitch who can’t even look after a simple pouch of coins.” He said, while grabbing her collar and pulling his fist back.

But before he could punch and before the owner of the inn could intervene, I was there grabbing hold of his hand.

“Let her go, and calm down. Think this through rationally. Can you not see she is already hurt.” I said, while pulling him away from her. The smell of alcohol is strong on his breath.

“Let go of me, you filthy moron.” He said as he turned around. The owner of the inn took the girl away from there the moment she was released. He turned around to faces me square. “This aint none of your business, so butt out.” He words were slightly slurred, he looked to be about in his twenties, and was way taller than me. “I do not care; you have to sober up before you can talk about business.”

“What did you say?” he spat. He lunged at me, it felt like he was moving through mud or sludge, that was how slow he was compared to me.

I must have unconsciously sped up my mind and so I merely stepped past his bear grip and kicked him in the crook of his knee. His bulky figure and his drunken state made him topple.

He was lying on the ground. I pressed my knee into the small of his back and chopped him in the back of the neck, knocking him out. He slumped, out cold. As I stood up all, the people at the bar look at me askance.

I simply said, “Sorry to disturb you evening drinks.” And then turned and went to the woman that got hurt. She looked about sixteen, with green eyes and brown hair. There were tears streaming on her face.

The owner came up to me. She looked about in her thirties and assessed what I did to the man. “Thanks, I was about to throw him out myself, causing such a ruckus over something so little.”

“I am sorry for the inconvenience he just did not seem with all his wits.” “Oh, not at all, not at all. “Forgive me I will be with you shortly.” She said and she escorted the crying woman up the stairs.

After a while she came back down and spoke. “Sorry dear my name is Leona and yours is?”

“Hi my name is Lucian pleased to meet you.” I said and she pointed to the bar. a I sat on one of the stools. She went behind the counter and stood in front of me. “Would you like something to eat?” she asked. “Yes please.” I said and she went into the back, probably a kitchen and returned a while later with a plate of roast beef, potatoes, and some rice with gravy.

As she placed it down, I took the fork and started eating, already hungry after my travels.

“I suppose you would like a room for the night my dear?” She asked, getting drinks for her other customers. “That’s why I am here, yes please.” I said after swallowing. “Perfect I have a room open, and it costs only three coppers.” She said while facing me.

Once I finished eating, she led me up the stairs and pointed to the third room on the right. “There you go, there is a bucket of hot water and a lantern in there hope you enjoy your stay.”
