Volume II - Chapter 46: Absorption Ceiling

  Chapter 46: Absorption Ceiling

The gains slowed. Not abruptly. Not enough to alarm anyone else. But Laurent felt it in the second week, when recovery finished and the body felt… unchanged. The ache faded. The reinforcement stayed shallow.

He carried more than before. Sustained it longer. And yet the next day looked too much like the last. Absorption wasn’t the issue. Essence still came easily—faster than his body could immediately spend. The pool stayed full, pressing outward, capacity inching higher with every cycle. He had more to work with than most of his cohort.

The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

  What he lacked was depth.

Tempering demanded placement—pressure guided into specific failure points until tissue learned to hold. Laurent’s infusion spread too evenly, reinforcing broadly instead of decisively. The result was reliable recovery and diminishing return.

Others passed him quietly. Not in strength, but in clean growth.

Aila’s loads climbed in smaller steps, but each stayed. Seris advanced unevenly, then stabilized. Even Cael’s reckless gains held better than Laurent’s newest ones.

By midweek, the numbers stopped moving. He tested again after rest. Same result. No loss. No advance.

Mr. Aren marked the slate once and moved on. Mr. Irel watched him longer than usual.

“You can take more,” he said. “You just don’t know where to put it.”

Laurent nodded. He already knew that part. The ceiling wasn’t absorption.

  It wasn’t endurance.

  It wasn’t pain tolerance.

It was refinement. And refinement, he was beginning to understand, could not be forced by volume alone.
