Doing the math backwards, that put Sam’s starting stats at level one like this:
Strength: 12
Dexterity: 15
Constitution: 7
Intelligence: 22
Willpower: 25
Senses: 8
Spirit: 15
Based on what he knew about himself, Sam surmised that the average adult human would have around a 10 in any given stat as the baseline. His constitution being a seven made sense considering he’d been quite the sickly child growing up, and asthma must’ve not helped either. He was a pretty smart guy all things considered (tested as a child and all that but not surprising considering his dad) and constantly struggling with mental health must have contributed to his willpower so his mental stats made sense to him. Martial arts definitely helped make my physical stats be the way that they are but he didn’t really have a clue what that spirit stat did or represented. Senses though, also understandable given that he had bad eyesight and mild hearing problems. Now though, none of that matters. It was intriguing how stats might work though, like with current strength being sixty two did that mean he was literally five times stronger now than he had been in the past? These were things he’d have to figure out over time.
Before moving on to picking traits, Sam decided he would have to spend his remaining free stat points. He knew because of the message from the system that his current stats were already ahead of the curve by quite a bit but he also did make a promise to himself to see all the things there were to see in the multiverse and the first step to reaching that goal was making sure he was actually alive to see those things. With that in mind he brought his Constitution up to one hundred. It seemed like this was the stat responsible for his health and stamina, both of which were imperative to guaranteeing his survival. It was kind of ironic that an apocalypse was the thing that made him care about making sure he stayed alive but that’s just how life goes. After that, he had twenty seven remaining points to spend which he promptly added to his sense stat. Being stronger didn’t matter if he couldn’t even see the danger coming his way.
Now it was time to see what these trait things actually are.
[Traits/Blessings]
[Traits function like passive skills. The primary difference between a trait and a skill is that traits, once gained, are things that metaphysically become a part of who you are and your very nature. Additionally while certain aspects of traits can be more active in nature and are either powered or enhanced by Mana, the traits themselves are unlike skills in that they can never be separated from you nor can you ever be fully impeded from using your traits. That is to say that by their very nature, traits are inherently powered in truth by something other than Mana.]
[Because of your title Sagacious Being, the way in which this title was acquired, and your current convictions upon entering and during the tutorial you have been awarded the following trait]
[Archivist of Creation] (S, ???)
[Archivist of Creation is a trait that allows you to record all things you experience and gain true appreciation for within an Archive found in your Soul Space. The nature and quality of the records created will vary. This trait has many other functions but you will have to discover those for yourself]
[As a result of remaining quest and performance rewards you may select 3 traits from the following list:]
Durable
- This trait increases the effect that constitution has on the quality of your body. It makes you harder to injure and in cases where you are, it makes it harder to keep you down. Because of the qualitative difference this makes on your physique, effects that heal you require more effort and power relative to your tier. However any effects that would bring you back from the brink of death are more effective than usual.
Regeneration
The author's content has been appropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.
- This trait increases the rate at which your stamina and health regenerate over time. Gaining this trait provides both a flat and a percentage based additional bonus to your natural regeneration based on your constitution stat and tier.
Keen Mind
- This trait improves the effect that intelligence has on your thought processes. It allows you to more quickly discern and better understand information in your environment. This provides a passive bonus to your ability to learn things and your rate of improvement when receiving tutelage from another as long as the endeavor is scholarly or mental in nature.
Sixth Sense
- This trait provides you with a new sense that scales in strength proportionate to your sense stat. It is a type of spatial perception that exists in a radius around you that lets you know the relative position of things regardless of your other senses.
Indomitable
- Once per month, this trait shields you from a single hit that would otherwise immediately kill you. When this happens your health is instead reduced to 1 and you become immune to damaging effects for 5 seconds afterward.
Faithful
- This trait provides a qualitative boost to any effects that rely on your convictions whenever you act in accordance with them. This trait also rewards you for following through on any promises or contracts you fulfill.
Unyielding
- This trait provides you with the ability to resist any effects and forces that would move or displace you against your will at the cost of half your base stamina and mana.
Stalwart Guard
- This trait provides you with the ability to share your healthpool with an ally, halving all of the damage that they would take at the cost of you receiving damage equal to 100% the damage that an ally you designate would have received. In order to use this trait you must be within 100ft of the designated ally and you must be above 50% health at the time of initial activation. This ability has a 24hr cooldown and the effect lasts for 1hour upon activation.
Arcane Sense
- This trait improves your ability to sense arcane energies and constructions. It also provides you with the ability to sense these energies if you do not already and this scales with your sense and spirit stats.
This was going to be a difficult choice to make. All of these sounded amazing to Samson. He would have to give more thought to choosing his traits. Already, he was almost certain of two that he would choose, but as for the third he was having a hard time thinking.
Before he could do anything else he heard a roar that rumbled the ground where he stood and it sounded like something was stomping its way over to where he was. He wasn’t actually sure if that was the case but he didn’t really want to chance being in the way of something that could shake the ground with its voice. With heart beating and senses on high alert, Sam continued his pilgrimage toward the mountains both to reach his goal and hopefully to put distance between himself and the roar’s originator.
As he made his way to the mountains, the same as he had been for the past however long, Sam found himself pondering his current situation. He was, despite the relative peril he was in, incredibly excited. Every new thing he experienced felt so novel and fresh. Even simply breathing the air felt more uplifting to him than it had ever been in his daily life. After all, how couldn’t he feel this way when he now knew, beyond any doubt, that magic was real. Not only was it real in fact, but that he would be able to participate in exceeding the mundane himself. This was, to him, on all accounts the fulfillment of a favored pastime and fantasy that he had frequently indulged in with his father throughout his childhood. And yet, despite the excitement and blooming curiosity about everything this new reality had to offer, Sam had a part of him that remained afraid. There was a part of him that didn’t want to gain too much hope or optimism for what things could be. In truth, that very part of him was terrified that he would go on to find out that despite magic being real, and this very situation being the fulfillment of a childhood fantasy, he would remain or find some way to still be discontent. That despite all the promise of what might be out there for him, that he still wouldn’t find a way to be happy.
While continuing his pilgrimage, a distance that still didn’t feel like it was really changing, Sam decided to try using his Archivist of Creation trait. It said in the description that he would have to have a true appreciation for the things he could record with the ability. It also mentioned a soulspace. The problem was that he wasn’t sure what either of those really entailed. Who exactly decided whether he truly appreciated something that he had experienced? Was it the system? And what exactly does it even mean by true appreciation? As for the soulspace, his assumption was that it wasn’t a physical thing just by going off of the name. He also didn’t know how to use or even activate the trait. Because the other two traits he had chosen so far didn’t have an active aspect to them, he couldn’t use them as a basis for how to initiate the usage of a trait. With nothing better to do, he thought of three things that he was appreciative of so far in the tutorial. From there he would pick one and try to focus on that for “recording” using the trait– whatever that actually ended up meaning. His three things were, his spear, the lake/water in it, and the trees that he had been using as shelter. These three, he surmised, were things that he had experienced so far. Additionally they were some of the things he was most grateful for, because of how significantly they contributed to his survival. He thought himself incredibly lucky that the water from the lake had been potable, otherwise he’d have died of thirst long before he ever got his class. His spear was how he was able to level up in the first place, or at the very least was a major contributor to the ease at which he was able to gain levels considering how much easier and safer it made killing goblins. The trees, well he was grateful for them in many ways. Coming from the modern world, worrying about shelter and wildlife was not a concern he was used to having; the trees providing him a modicum of peace for sleeping while in such an unknown place was incredibly comforting. Now he just had to pick which of the three he would try to focus his efforts on archiving with his trait.
Despite how impactful to his immediate survival the spear and the lakewater had been, Sam decided to try and focus on archiving a tree. For some reason the trees he had been sleeping in had given him the most comfort in this situation so far, at least if we were only considering new things and not counting the rosary and handkerchief he had in his pocket. With that in mind, Sam took a break from his endless march in order to approach the shade of the nearest tree. He wasn’t sure what species it was, or if it was even a tree from Earth in the first place. Not knowing how to proceed from there, and after taking a quick look around to see if there was anyone nearby– even though he fully doubted anyone being anywhere close to where he was– Sam hugged the tree… And of course, nothing happened. Chuckling to himself at the silly attempt, he decided to sit down at the base of the tree and do some meditating and maybe a little prayer.
After drinking some water and eating a few of his remaining rations, Sam went through the motions of trying to sense the energies around him as he had been doing daily for the entire time he’d been making his way forward. This time though he tried to visualize the trees that had given him reprieve as well. He thought about their form, their reliable trunks, the cool shade, and sturdy branches. He didn’t know what their place in this ecosystem was, or if this place even had a natural ecosystem but regardless he was grateful for their presence in the tutorial at the very least. The trees were particularly uniform, making him assume that they were all the same species, but they had enough differences between them to know they weren’t just all copies of each other. He tried to visualize the branches he would spend his nights on, and he would think of the leaves in the canopy. He imagined them drinking in the energies he tried to cultivate whenever he meditated while resting. Much in the same way that he thought of those energies similarly to his breath, he imagined them spreading from the leaves and roots into the internal structures of the tree. As he did this he tried to connect with the Archivist of Creation trait. He thought about imprinting the path that the energies must take through the trees into something of a drawing or stencil of their form in his mind. After sometime, while in the process of reflecting on why exactly he liked these trees so much, Sam experienced something sort of clicking into place. As this happened, he received a notification and glowing blue text from the system filled the space in front of his eyes.
[Spiritual Narra Tree recorded in your Archive of Creation]
Clicking on the notification, Sam was suddenly sucked into what looked like a mostly empty space without walls or anything really; except off to one side sat a single bookshelf with one book on it and next to the shelf toward the center of the space was a magnificent specimen of one of the trees he slept on. Trees he now knew were called Spiritual Narra, which by the way also partially explained why he took such comfort in the plants. His father’s ancestral home had mundane versions of these trees everywhere and he remembered spending time climbing some as a small child with his dad. He figured this had to be what his soulspace was. For a second he panicked because he didn’t know how to leave but eventually calmed down when he felt like something of a spiritual switch existed in his mind that he intuitively knew for some reason would bring him back to the waking world if he wanted. Before even looking at the contents of the bookshelf and its singular book, he flipped that very switch. Just like that he opened his eyes and it seemed he had never left his spot underneath the tree. As much as he wanted to look at what was in that book right now, he didn’t seem to have senses in the real world whenever he was in the soulspace so he would only do that if he was somewhere he was sure was safe.
