EPISODE 12. THE SILENT RESPONSE

"Upload Complete: A-73" It was a paper he hadn't even written, uploaded under his name the moment he stopped typing.

  [March 26, 2019 — 2:10 AM] Gosiwon, Room 206.

Yun-jae lay in bed, but his eyes wouldn't close.

"March 27th, 10:00 AM. Hyeonjuk Building, Basement Level 2." The voice echoed in his ears like a phantom. "Refusal will trigger immediate A-Class Protocol."

He sat up and opened the secure channel.

  A-73: 3870-09, are you there?

3870-09: Did you receive the notice?

  A-73: Yes. Re-education... tomorrow morning at 10:00.

3870-09: Expected. They’re using the surgery hold at the hospital to rattle you.

  A-73: What do I do?

3870-09: Reply that you will attend. But don't actually go.

A-73: Say I'm coming... and then ghost them?

3870-09: Cancel exactly one hour before. You must create a situation where attendance is impossible. By postponing, AS will categorize you as 'Cautious and Deliberate'—someone who can still be controlled.

3870-09: Immediate refusal signals 'Danger.' Immediate attendance signals 'Submissiveness.' This organization only recognizes extremes. You must stay in the gray area between them to survive.

  Yun-jae exhaled slowly.

A-73: How much longer do I have to live like this?

3870-09: At least until April 5th. Hold on until your father's surgery.

The chat closed. Yun-jae stared at the ceiling. Ten days left. Can I survive ten more days of this?

[07:30 AM] He opened the laptop again. [Task 3: 40/80 Pages Completed] [Time Remaining: 48 Hours]

Collaboration mode flared to life: [A-12 CONNECTED].

He began to type. Page 41. Page 42. Suddenly, the screen flickered for a fraction of a second. [Upload Complete: User A-73]

Yun-jae froze. "Upload?" He checked the dashboard, but the notification had vanished.

He frantically checked his bank app. The balance was normal. Sent emails? Normal. But he knew. Something had been sent out in his name while he was still writing.

AS wasn't just watching him. They were proving they could replace him at any moment.

  [AS INTERNAL LOG - CLASSIFIED]

A-47: Subject 73 reacted exactly as predicted.

  A-12: Facial metrics?

A-47: Panic. Confusion. Vigilance. All within expected parameters.

If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

A-12: Should we move him to re-education now?

A-47: Not yet. We don't want 'Resistance' or 'Compliance.' We want the Silent Response—the reaction born from shaking between the two. That is how we map the grain of his psyche.

A-12: To find the depth of the crack?

A-47: Exactly. 73 appears calm, but he has a tendency to follow a crack to its end. That’s useful... but we must measure its depth before we can truly own him.

[02:15 PM] Yun-jae reached Page 55. Every word felt like it was being weighed on a scale. A private message from 3870-09 pinged.

  3870-09: A-73. You know A-12, don't you?

A-73: Yes. We’re working together right now.

  3870-09: A-12... is someone I know.

  A-73: Who?

3870-09: Five years ago, he was the prosecutor who led the investigation against Lee Seo-jun.

Yun-jae stopped typing. His blood ran cold.

  A-73: A prosecutor?

3870-09: Special Investigations Team 2. He orchestrated the entire case against Senior Lee. And now... he is AS’s A-12.

Yun-jae stared at the label at the top of his screen: [A-12 CONNECTED]. The man who took over the case after Yun-jae was forced out. The man who finished what the system started.

  A-73: What is his name?

  3870-09: Choi Min-ho.

The name hit him like a physical blow. Choi Min-ho. The man with the ice-cold sneer who had whispered in his ear five years ago as Yun-jae cleared his desk: "Justice is an expensive hobby, Prosecutor Han. If you can't afford it, give it up early."

3870-09: He was passed over for promotions because he had no backing. AS recruited him by promising to 'recognize his talent.'

Yun-jae balled his fists. The system that killed Lee Seo-jun had turned his prosecutor into its weapon.

3870-09: Be careful. Choi Min-ho isn't just a manager. He is A-Class. He is reading your soul through your typing.

[07:40 PM] Yun-jae closed his laptop after hitting Page 60. He felt hollowed out. He headed downstairs to the ground floor mailboxes.

Inside his slot was a plain white envelope. No label. No stamp. Inside was a single, unbranded USB drive. He hurried back to his room.

[USB MOUNTING...] A single PDF file appeared: [A-73_Evaluation_Record.pdf]

  [A-73 PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION]

  •   Date: 2019.03.20 - 2019.03.25

  •

  •   Assigned: A-12

  •

  •   Emotional Control: LOW → MEDIUM

  •

  •   Compliance: BELOW AVERAGE → MEDIUM

  •

  •   Risk Level: MEDIUM → LOW

  •

  Notes:

  •   Father’s surgery pressure is effective.

  •

  •   Guilt regarding Lee Seo-jun is leverageable.

  •

  •   Re-education: PENDING.

  •

  Conclusion: WITHIN CONTROLLABLE RANGE.

"Controllable range," Yun-jae whispered, the words searing his vision. He ripped the USB out.

Was this another test? Was they watching him open it? Analyzing his speed, his heart rate, his subsequent silence?

  He opened the secure channel.

A-73: I found a USB in my mailbox.

  3870-09: Did you open it?

A-73: Yes. It was my evaluation record.

3870-09: ...As expected. This is a Silence Test. They are watching how you react to being 'known.' If you lash out, it’s Resistance. If you ignore it, it’s Apathy. If you open it and remain silent, it proves you are 'Controllable.'

A-73: Then what should I do?

3870-09: You’ve done well by contacting me. Remain silent toward AS. Show them no reaction at all.

[11:50 PM] Yun-jae drafted his reply to the Re-education Team.

[To: AS Re-education Team] I will attend the session on March 27th at 10:00 AM. - A-73 Han Yun-jae

  Send.

  Immediately, he messaged Woo-jin.

  A-73: I’ve sent the confirmation.

3870-09: Good. At 9:00 AM tomorrow, send the cancellation. 'Family emergency. Attendance impossible. Requesting reschedule.'

  A-73: Copy that.

  3870-09: You're doing well, A-73. Just a little longer.

Yun-jae collapsed onto his bed. His mind was a chaotic blur of Choi Min-ho’s face, the evaluation PDF, and the ticking clock of his father’s life.

"Just a little longer," he muttered into the dark.

[Next Chapter Preview] March 27th, 9:00 AM. Yun-jae sends the cancellation message. But AS delivers a response he never expected: "Cancellation is not an option. We are already at your door."

  Breathing.

  Silence.

  is the cleanest fingerprint.
