Just after showing that eerie smile that was much bigger than it should be, the small clay started to move. It rushed towards the back room, away from the party, and closed the door behind it.
"Did we scare him?" Blue lowered her hands.
"Maybe. I'm not sure," Hera just shrugged. The thing moved so fast that she wasn't even able to trigger her [Observe].
The group walked towards the door where the monster vanished into and tried to open. It wasn't locked, but it seemed like something was holding the door. They kept pushing and slamming the door.
When they finally busted the door open, several clay dolls fell from behind the door. The puppets scrambled away and hid behind various wooden dollhouses spread around the chamber.
Careful, Hera and her friends stepped inside the room. Ready to fight the creatures. As they crossed the threshold to the door, one of the dolls appeared in front of the group. Leo froze, his eyes stuck to the small creature. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Hera triggered her [Observe].

Minor Earth Elemental - Clayman
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Clayman took a flower from behind his back and pointed towards Blue, who was in front of the group. The controller opened a big smile and kneeled down to receive the flower.
"Blue! What are you doing?" Leo gasped, looking at her.
She just waved him off, "Relax. They are adorable," she reached out and took the flower, "Thank you, little one. You are really cute. You know that?"
As she spoke, the Clayman jumped and started waving his arms. Soon about twenty other small Claymen appeared on top of the dollhouses. Unsure of what would happen, Hera stepped in front of Bonnie to protect the researcher from any attacks.
The Claymen all started shuffling in place, stomping their feet on the roofs of the houses. Suddenly, a series of trapdoors in the ceiling flung open, and the group was showered in flower petals. A line of small earth elementals came marching towards Blue, carrying a large necklace made of flowers, and presented it to the controller.
"What is that?" Blue asked.
"It looks like those necklaces we get when we go to a paradise island. If I remember correctly, it means friendship," Bonnie replied, still unsure of what to expect.
Blue took a moment looking at the necklace, having the same expression anyone would have while using their [Inspect], "It seems harmless. In the description, it even says that it is a gift of friendship," Blue said, picking the necklaces and placing around her neck.
"What if that's a trap? Or if there is some type of poison in it?" Leo stepped back.
"But it seems fine, and they don't seem hostile," Alex looked around. Despite the eerie look of the Claymen, they didn't feel like a threat.
"Hera, you have a thing that shows when there is danger nearby, right? What do you feel?" Leo had his eyes open wide, with a small glint of panic on his face.
"Not quite, it tells me when monsters are closer than 5 meters away from me. And right now it's going off like crazy, but that doesn't mean that they are bad," the Explorer explained.
"But these dolls are possessed, how can that be ok?" the hunter cried. A few of the Claymen looked at each other with worried expressions.
"Leo, did you check their names? They are not dolls, much less they are possessed. They are earth elementals," Alex said, placing her hand on the man's shoulder.
"What?"
"You didn't even check it?" Hera asked, raising one eyebrow.
Leo looked down, then towards one of the Clayman atop a house, " My bad. For a moment I thought this was the spirit room."
"Dude, are you really that terrified of spirits?" Blue was patting the heads of the Claymen around her.
Leo rolled his eyes, "Oh, sorry for not liking the idea of something that can enter my body and make me do things I wouldn't do."
"I think you are seeing too many movies. Spirits don't do that. Not down here, at least. Some spirits are capable of possessing people, but they are only seen after the 12th layer. Even then, they cannot directly harm you. At most they can attack your party, but not use your skills," Bonnie explained as she started to play with a few Claymen.
Leo kept mumbling while the rest of the group interacted with the elementals. They were extremely friendly. Not only did they offer flower necklaces for everyone, but they showed their houses and the gardens they tended to. There was an entire society here, living and thriving.
Hera felt like she was interacting with a village of enthusiastic children. Still, she tried looking around for something controlling those creatures. Or maybe a trap that was being prepared, but to no avail. There was nothing of the sort anywhere in this miniature village.
The elementals led the group to a set of stools, gesturing for them to sit. While most of the group was still weary, Blue plopped down as if she was home. Once she did, the Claymen jumped up, and started to massage her using their feet.
Leo still protested the idea, but Blue's face was too relaxed to pay attention to the man. The small hands were perfect for the job. Eventually, once they were sure this wasn't some sort of trap, the group sat down to join the message.
The small elementals were very enthusiastic. They got to the point of making a rotation between the makeshift masseuses. It didn't look like they got tired, and instead just that they all wanted to participate.
After about one hour, the group said their goodbyes to the elementals. Not only feeling refreshed but having received a buff from the Claymen.
In the central room, the light above the Earth door was different, having a yellowish-brown hue. Only two lights remained at that same blue shade, the one from the entrance and the one from the one door they had yet to take. According to Bonnie, that path would take them to the spirit room, following the pentagram idea. Leo tried to check the exit, but it seemed that they still hadn't completed the quest.
"Leo, do you want to stay in the middle of the group?" Alex asked.
Blue held out her hand, "You can even hold my hand, we won't laugh. It's just like Alex and the frogs."
He thanked them and accepted the offer of staying in the center of the pack. Entering the spirit door, they reached the familiar book room. This one had a crystal-like design. Almost like a mineral based growth coming from the sides of the wall.
They confirmed that all the books had the same problem as those in the other libraries. If they touched them, they would turn to dust. Since it was something they were used to, it took only a few seconds to confirm that.
Hera walked toward the back of the room and found a simple wooden door. However, there were several white runes along its frame. Unlike the others, there was no handle here, and by simply pushing the wood, she opened the door.
In front of Hera was a hallway with several tiles making a path. The floor wasn't a straight line, but a labyrinth-like trail that would lead to the other side. Besides the tiles, there were holes that seemed to lead to an infinite abyss.
Picking a piece of a power bar, Hera tossed it into the chasm and tried to hear when it hit the ground. Sadly, there was no sound even after a full minute. If it was because the hole truly led to an eternal drop or there was something stopping any noise from coming out she didn't know. Still, the path was simple enough. It shouldn't be hard to cross it without falling.
She took one step towards the hallway, and as soon as she crossed the threshold of the door, the tiles vanished. Hera had taken one step forward, and she still could feel the floor beneath her feet. Yet, looking down, she only saw the dark abyss.
Showing the problem to the group, they decided to use Leo's spear as a cane to feel the path ahead. Going in single file line, Blue was in front, followed by Alex, Leo, Bonnie, and Hera. They were moving carefully, but around the halfway point, Blue couldn't find a path forward.
Before making any decisions, Hera tried using her Pulse spell. As her mana expanded, she could feel the invisible floor with a different type of energy. Moving carefully, she started to lead the group to the secondary path, avoiding any route that would lead to a dead end.
She had to use the spell several times before reaching the end, almost depleting her mana. After almost twenty minutes, they arrived at the circular room with the carvings on the wall. This time, it was a male mage, in the same pose as the others, with some energy coming off his hands.
The energy floated like small ghostly orbs, becoming denser and turning into bones and skeletal hands. It reached a graveyard from which zombies started to rise. Above the other door was the picture of the Grim Reaper being flanked by a lich on one side, and a death knight on the other
"That's not ominous at all," Blue said as she felt Leo tightening the grasp on her hand.
"Are you ok?" Alex turned to the Hunter.
"I'm fine. Let's finish this soon," Leo shook his head.
They stopped for a few moments so Hera could replenish her mana. Everyone understood that this part of the dungeon was supposed to be safe. Another half an hour later, they moved through the door beneath the Grim Reaper. It was utterly dark, but as they moved away from the entrance, a set of torches lit up with a pale green light. After a few moments, other light spheres of a similar light started to appear from the ground.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ignis Fatuus
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"What the hell is that?" Leo gasped, getting ready to attack with his spear.
"Those are will'o'wisps, ghost lights. They are harmless, but some folklore says that they help spirits find their way," Bonnie started to prepare an Air Fist.
As if waiting for their cue, a group of eleven spirits came through the wall. They were about the same size of a person, and looked like ghosts made out of white sheets.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Artificial Poltergeist
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Ok, those are ghosts," Bonnie shifted to create a Cold Bomb in front of her.
As the creatures approached, Leo got increasingly agitated. When one poltergeist moved quickly towards the group, the Hunter stabbed it with his spear. The apparition showed a deep red gash in the middle of its form and started to shiver and shake violently.
As if resonating with the wounded one, the rest of them began to have the same reaction. Following that, the torches around the room shook and fell to the ground without losing their light.
With a loud wailing noise, the remaining rushed towards the group. Bonnie flung her spell, but after the small explosion, the creatures showed no signs of slowing down. Hera and Alex slashed at the ones approaching, creating more red marks. The smell of burned hair quickly filled the room.
"This is awful," Alex said as she slashed once again at the creature. She couldn't feel anything while her dagger passed through it. However, the reddish-orange glow in her blade turned brighter when it cut the monster.
Hera was having a similar experience when she used Iris. Every one of her attacks seemed to slighly burn the ghosts. Her chakram, on the other hand, was different. They would not merely burn, but the slash would catch on fire and spread a bit before stopping. This was likely a result of the affinity to magic the weapon had.
Leo was being less than helpful. Every time a phantom would come close, he flailed around wildly, almost hitting his friends. Blue, who had to duck down to avoid his strike, grabbed his spear.
You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.
"Gimme that. You are freaking out too much to be helpful," Using the spear, the controller finally had a way to deal with the ghosts. The dagger she had was too small to be used in a fight.
Bonnie used the Air Fist several times, but it only pushed the creatures back slightly. It wasn't much, but if she timed it right, she could help the group avoid the attacks. In a few moments, the ghosts seemed to be showing some wear and tear, but it didn’t stop them from advancing towards the group.
The spirits had an odd way of fighting. They would try to do something close to a body slam to hit their enemies. However, there was no contact. When they passed through someone, they would feel as if an arctic wind hit them.
Moving forward, Blue pushed two of the ghosts away while Alex managed to push back one. Seeing the other eight closings in, Hera attached the chakram to Yarnball and threw it in a line, hitting three approaching spirits. They started to burn as the explorer pulled the chakram back, blocking others with her axe. Even so, it wasn't enough to deal with all the ghosts. A couple managed to pass by to attack the group.
One of the spirits didn't pass through like the others. It latched onto Hera, keeping her inside it. Hera started to feel colder and colder, as if she were in the middle of a blizzard. Her body seemed to stiffen up, and she began to shiver. Not only that, but her arms felt heavy, like they were underwater.
Hera tried to move, but everything was sluggish, and she was getting tired. Too tired to even move.
Suddenly, Alex appeared by her side and slashed the ghost that had trapped the Explorer. Just as quickly as those feeling came, they vanished, and Hera felt normal again.
"We should go to the door, that way they only have one way of coming through!" Blue yelled as she stabbed a ghost with the spear. Despite most of the monster being almost completely covered in red gashes, they were still moving.
"They pass through walls! If we do that, they can appear out of nowhere!" Leo protested
Worried there might be another ghost coming from beneath them, Hera activated her Pulse. She was unable to feel anything past the gray rock around her, but the spirits had a line of mana going towards the torches and the will'o'wisps. She turned around and threw the chakram towards the closest Ignis Fatuus making it vanish together with one of the Poltergeist.
"Aim for the torches and the other things. They are sharing mana," Hera shouted.
The group scrambled towards the lights and hit them with their weapons, finally making the ghosts disappear. However, during that time, two of the poltergeists latched on to Hera. By the time they were gone, she had fallen to the ground, shivering with cold.
Blue rushed towards the Explorer, seeing her friend trembling so much that it almost felt like a seizure, but Bonnie stopped her before the Controller could touch her.
"Wait, we don't know if that can affect someone else. Hera, open your status, see if there is anything out of order."
Hera nodded, opening her status page while rubbing her arm.
"M-M-My body he-he-heat is g-g-gone," Hera did her best to convey the information.
"Does it spread?" Bonnie asked.
Hera shook her head, "I-It doesn't sa-sa-say."
"Ok, so what does it say?" Bonnie asked.
"Screw that! She's shivering like crazy," Blue said, picking Hera up, "Leo, lead the way through the hallway. We need to take her to the fire room."
"N-No, i-it just ta-ta-takes half a-an ho-ho-hour," Hera said, not wanting to make the group go through all that just for her.
"Shut up! We are going," Blue scolded, already walking to the corridor.
Hera tried to use her Pulse spell and help with the invisible bridge, but was scolded by Blue once again. Not just because the Explorer was hurt, but because this time, the holes were gone. The entire thing was now solid, allowing them to walk without a problem.
In less than a minute, they arrived at the fire book room. The Controller sat by the open door that leads to the flame trapped hallway. It was already much warmer here, even with the fire only appearing once every several minutes. The temperature allowed Hera to feel a bit more comfortable, and the debuff had lost one stack, only 23 minutes now.
While recovering, Hera paid attention to what the group was discussing.
"Ok, so they dropped 120 gold in total, and this ghost light rock," Alex showed the drops to the group.
"So, 24 gold each. Does the rock do anything?" Leo asked.
"It says its light can reveal spirits, lighting their path. Maybe it could be used to show the bridge," Alex kept tossing the rock from one hand to another.
"Well, this would have been much more useful sooner," Blue replied.
"Yeah, but it could be better if we need to run this dungeon again," as Bonnie finished speaking, she turned to Hera. The explorer was getting some color back on her face, and her lips were no longer purple.
"Sorry, I should have been more careful," Hera was nested on Blue's lap. As odd as it felt, the Controller's body heat was very comforting.
"Don't be. You figured out how to beat them," Leo smiled at Hera, but Blue slapped the Hunter's shin.
"Don't compliment her! She was reckless and too eager to put herself in danger because of us," Blue snapped at Leo and turned to face Hera, "You should have been more patient or told us to clear a path. We are a team, are we not?"
Hera looked away, "Yeah, I didn't think. It was a reflex."
"That's a crappy reflex. Seriously, what is the matter with all of you? Am I the only one who remembers what we learned? I'm sick of being the mom friend. I didn't have fun making you lot to have to be responsible for you all."
Blue kept ranting, and Hera couldn't help but agree. Aside from the Controller, they all had taken stupid risks. It was too big of a burden to leave on her shoulders. In the middle of Blue's tirade, Alex couldn't hold anymore and let out a giggle.
"I'm serious here, Alex!" Blue yelled.
"No, I know. And you make a valid point. It's just.." she started laughing, "It's kind of hard not to think of you as the mom friend when you are literally cradling Hera."
Realizing the situation, the rest of the group laughed with the assassin. Even Blue joined in the joke.
"Listen here, Hera. I'm not letting you go because you are still cold. But the second you need a change of diapers, I'm tossing you in the fire."
The group waited for Hera's debuff to end and walked back to the center room. They now realized that things hadn't changed. There were still two blue lights, one green, one red and one yellowish-brown one.
"I guess we missed something," Bonnie was staring at the light in front of the spirit door.
"Why do you say that? Couldn't the color be the same?" Leo asked.
"Well, I guess. But the quest didn't show up saying it was over, right? I'm assuming it would be like our role quests."
Alex walked towards the exit and placed her hand on the invisible wall, " Yeah, the message about giving up is still here."
"But what did we miss? Was there anything else in the room?" Hera asked.
"I'm not sure. We rushed away because of you," Leo replied, still staring at the lights.
Hera looked away. She should have been more careful.
"Wait, no, I didn't mean like that," Realizing how it sounded, the Hunter rubbed the back of his neck, "We had to leave because you went down. Like we need to put you in a safe place. I mean, we didn't have time to look for anything else."
Interrupting him, Bonnie started to talk, " What he means is that we were more worried about you than about whatever we could find in there."
Leo thanked the Researcher with his eyes.
"It's fine, I understand," Hera turned towards the spirit door, "Alex, you still have the rock, right? Let's see if the path shows up with that."
The group crossed the spirit door one by one. Bonnie, who was in the back, saw that when Alex went through the door, the green light turned back to blue.
"Wait!" Bonnie commanded.
She did a few tests and confirmed that the green light only showed up when Alex was in the room. Asking people to move one by one, she also confirmed that the yellowish-brown light would appear as long as anyone was inside the circular room. On the other hand, everyone could make the red light appear with the exception of Bonnie herself.
After quickly explaining her discovery, the Researched continued, "With all that, we can assume that something with us is triggering the change of light. It wasn't something we did inside the rooms. I would say that the buff from the Claymen triggers the yellow light, since is the only thing we all share. The fire element in your weapons, the red. I'm the only one who doesn't have a weapon enchanted by it. The green light is being affected by the sash that Alex is using."
"Then why the spirit light is not working? We have the ghost light rock," Alex asked.
Bonnie thought for a few moments, "Maybe the ghost light doesn't actually use any spirit magic. It can be just something like an illusion. If we need the elements to trigger this, then it makes sense."
"Then all we need is to get something that has a spirit element in there, right? Maybe the torches?" Blue suggested.
"Maybe we should inspect the things to figure out for sure. Oh, by the way. Does anyone have a bottle or something? It just dawned on me that we could save the red liquid to use outside," Hera said as she checked her belongings.
Checking everything, no one had a free bottle, but Bonnie suggested using her waterskin. As long as someone shared their water, she should be fine. The group went back to the fire room, grabbing more of the liquid while Bonnie stayed in the fire library, and then back to the spirit room. The ghost light helped the group cross the bridge. Leo and Bonnie decided to stay behind since the hunter was too scared to go into the room again.
After a few minutes, the group returned with one of the torches. It was the only thing that they could find in the room, and according to the inspection, the torches were doused with 'essence of spirit'.
While they waited, Bonnie and Leo kept trying to understand the blueprint, but it was difficult since they weren't able to read the language. The only thing the researcher was able to guess was that the crystal was either an energy storage or part of a generator. The design reminded her of the magic generators that are used back on Earth.
When the rest of the group arrived, they all walked back to the central room. This time, the sphere in front of the spirit door changed color to a pale white. The light seemed to try to overpower the other colors, turning anything near it into black and white.
"Ok, it worked, now what?" Blue asked, holding the unlit torch.
"I have no idea. I thought that, having all the lights changing colors, something would happen," Bonnie was looking around, already searching for a new clue.
After several minutes, the group was still unable to find anything else in the circular room.
"There is only one thing we haven't tried yet," Hera said, looking at the center of the room.
When they approached it, the lights would lower and get close to the ground. Likely, if someone were to stand in the very center of the room, all lights would touch the floor.
"I guess so. I just don't like the idea of triggering something without knowing what it is," Bonnie was staring at the lights.
"Ok then, I'll do it," Blue started walking towards the middle of the room, where the spiral started.
"Are you sure?" Alex asked while the lights moved towards the floor.
"Yep, my turn to be reckless. Besides, I'm the sturdiest one among us. If anyone can survive a trap here, it's me."
As Blue got closer to the middle, the lights hit the floor sooner than everyone was expecting. Yet, nothing happened. When the controller took another step, the lights seeped into the ground's crevices, following the spiral path towards the middle. The closer Blue got to the center of the room, the more the lights moved through the groves.
When she finally stepped into the center of the spiral, all the glowing cracks shone brighter, and a rainbow light took the place of the colored glow. The light grew brighter and brighter. Suddenly it turned back to a soft glow.
A clanging noise echoed in the chamber, and a circular area near Blue started to descend. Leo, Bonnie, and Alex were already on the platform. Realizing she would be left behind, Hera rushed toward the elevator and jumped onto it.
Leo and Blue saw her coming and helped the explorer not to fall from the edge. Now that they were going down, she could see how high the tower was supposed to be. They could easily be on the fifth floor of a building.
The only source of light they had was the glow from the platform. Yet, it was enough to make them see an enormous blue crystal in the back of the room. It was easily six meters tall and even wider. Around it, there were four other crystals, one red, one green, one white and one yellow, all in the same disposition as the doors on the top floor.
"We just have to break this, right?" Leo asked.
"Really? You see something you don't understand, and your first instinct is to break it?" Bonnie rolled her eyes.
"What, it was the quest. Find whatever is making this place go nuts and destroy it."
Hera shook her head, "Not quite. The quest said we needed to deactivate it. Yes, destroying could be an option, but we don't have to."
The platform reached its destination, connecting perfectly in the hole in the middle of the room. After a small noise, the lights on the platform spread around and covered the entire floor. Illuminating the area properly. Yet, there wasn't anything else to see here. Just the giant crystal and the gray walls.
"What should we do?" Alex stepped out of the platform.
"Let's look around first. Then we can make a decision," Hera followed along, already looking to see if they were missing anything.
Searching around, the group didn't find any door or anything aside from the crystals until Alex used the ghost light rock in one of the jewels.
"Over here!" the assassin gasped.
The group rushed to her and saw an intricate magic circle around not only each of the crystals but also a larger one that encompassed them. After analyzing the array, Bonnie grabbed her tablet and scrolled through her notes.
"Here, this one looks like the one we found in the fire room. It has the same pattern in the blueprint."
"And? What does that mean?" Blue frowned.
"A spell that requires this kind of setup lives and dies by the magic circle. If it's broken, then the spell fades," the researcher explained.
"But can't it explode or something?" Alex asked.
"It depends on the amount of mana that the spell uses," Bonnie turned to Hera," Can you check with your Pulse how much mana is around us?"
Hera nodded and used the spell. She felt very little mana coming from the magic circles. But the crystals were something different. The small ones seemed to be gathering mana from the area and then sending it to the big one.
When her mana reached the blue crystal, Hera was taken aback. The gem felt like a water bottle of sorts. It was filled to the brim with mana, and the mana inside it was weird. It didn't feel normal, almost as if it was changing all the time.
Explaining what she saw, Bonnie nodded and asked for Blue's dagger.
"Ok, so if I'm right, this magic circle is just here to direct the mana. If we break the connection, it should just stop."
"What if it lets the mana out? Won't we be in danger?" Hera held Bonnie's shoulder so she wouldn't do anything without speaking with the group first.
"I don't think it would let it out, not all at once, at least. If that is the same type of crystal used in generators, the mana will start to leave it as if it were a wet towel put out to dry."
Alex stared at the researcher with a puzzled expression, "How do you know that?"
Bonnie took a deep breath and replied without looking up, "My father's company makes industrial-grade magic generators. I had to learn how they worked. That was my summer camp."
Hera asked if Bonnie was sure about that. The amount of mana she felt inside the crystal was staggering.
"Not completely, but it is the best idea I have. Breaking this will likely cause mana to flood everywhere. Or worst, explode. If anyone has another suggestion, I'm all ears. As long as it is not hitting that," she replied, looking at Leo.
Having no other ideas, the group just nodded and stood by her while Bonnie broke the mana circle. According to her, this wasn't difficult. The array had been drawn on top of the gray stone, so it was away from its protective barrier.
This was apparent since Hera could feel the circle. Bonnie scratched the outer layer of the magic circle and proceeded to remove the first set of runes, making a line towards the central crystal. She wasn't sure what the runes did, but apparently generators followed a set pattern, and removing this ring of runes would turn the entire thing off.
When she reached the first internal circle, the entire array shone with a soft sparkling light and faded now revealed even without the ghost light. At the same time, a bright multicolored glow covered Blue, Alex, Bonnie, and Hera. That was followed by a notification that appeared in front of every member of the party.
