Interlude - Excerpts from the Empresss Diary pt 1

  29-11-1704

  …

I had sent a message to my embassy in Macknor. One of the princesses, Yancea, has been breaking my taboo. He is to demand that Atlas surrender her immediately. Place particular emphasis on how many Elves have died recently in their lands. Perhaps a more forceful approach.

  …

  30-11-1704

  …

The generals report that everything is ready. We will need to raze everything to the ground if necessary. A show of force will likely be all that is necessary.
They are to surrender Yancea.

  …

  1-12-1704

  …

A message arrived. Yancea is dead. But her tapestry had not returned to me. We will be receiving her corpse and Atlas will be sending a girl. She has a tapestry and it is interwoven with elf threads? A devourer in Atlas? I gave orders for them to bring this girl to me. To not examine her too closely less they trigger one of my commands.

  …

  4-12-1704

  …

I have gained two new pets. One is an annoying flying octopus that is incapable of not risking death. The other is a literal monster. It feeds off blood. Yet has a status screen. After subduing the beast I learn a great deal about this Vampire. Ultimately I was able to create a contract with it. It must obey so long as it is given at least a drop of my blood everyday. That the first drop resulted in the creature writhing on the floor until I demanded it stop. I knew its skills allowed it not to show its ‘bliss’ physically. Seems it was of a mind to debase itself. My first command was for it to not look at its status screen and to not hear any of the voices from other parts of her soul. I am of the mind to form this creature into an Elf. If I cannot risk killing it to birth it as a princess I will simply form it into one. It would not do for others to interfere.

  ….

  5-12-1704

  …

The monster was rather despondent today. It murmured something about the worst one so far, and red misses another one. When the flying one got in my face, I demanded an explanation of what the thing was. A piece of her soul to speak for her is what it told me. Is this the other self its skills spoke of? The red? It didn't identify any differently than the monster. I issued a command for it to reabsorb the piece of soul immediately. The monster cried but did so. Its only words were worse than Hanki.

  …

  7-12-1704

  …

A massive tiering occurred. It was the monster. Tier five now. It already had a new core. I told it to break it. It did so. I had asked it if its other cores had filled yet. When it answered in the affirmative I demanded she it remove them. The beast's tails disappeared as it did. In the end I felt the monster was weakened. Asking revealed that its stats should be at 10 for its physical ones. It no longer had access to its magic.

I gave the cores to my scribes. While the majority were just dungeon cores the blood mana one was of particular interest.

  …

  9-12-1704

  …

The monster has yet to grow an arcane core to replace the one I had it shatter. When asked why, the creature simply remarked ‘Red’ must have it. So the flying creature was not ‘Red’ then. Further inquiry only brought out ‘Red’ was her sister and that she was likely dead. Which just annoyed me. How can this ‘Red’ have her nascent core if she is dead. I feel that forcing answers from it is degrading its mind. Much of the emotion I had sensed from it has withered since its contracting to me. No matter, if it is but a doll that can birth my three princesses then that is fine.

  …

  11-12-1704

  …

The tails grew back. They appeared in the order that she
had removed the cores. When I ordered them removed. They all shattered on leaving her throat except for the arcane one. It was bigger than the previous one. It had formed first. I asked why they had shattered. It replied that aside from the arcane one they had yet to ignite. I think it's about time we used this creature skills to start pruning her Tapestry.

  …

  12-12-1704

  …

A snag. The monster is unable to see Tapestries. I summon instructors. They work with her all day. It gets a better aura sense but it won't be today that we can start pruning.

The war Atlas wages against its neighbor is heating up. It had been at a stalemate for a while but the battlelines had started shifting again. Atlas must have committed a higher tier resource to the front line. There are treaties against committing anyone higher than tier four to battles like this. I will need to send an observer to confirm Atlas is not trying to grow a new champion.

  …

  15-12-1704

  …

More tails. Other than the tail associated with the arcane core they seemed less there. I had her it wait to fill them all. Another set removed, the arcane was bigger again. The others are smaller. Seems I could rid her of these cores by simply having her remove them before they ignite. It should result in the loss of these tails as well. I had sent a message to my scribe asking for their input on the matter.

  …

  16-12-1704

  …

The creature was in a daze when I found her I asked her what she was being stupified by. She only remarked that it was the first time seeing it. When she looked above me she only murmured ‘beautiful galaxies’. Never before had any spoken of Tapestries as such, certainly not of mine. I demand to know why she was so enamored. She off hand spoke of being able to see ultra violet and that perhaps it looked plainer to others. Another thing to fix. I pointed at the first extraneous portion of her Tapestry. She murmured ‘goodbye Sam’ as she severed it. She lost consciousness after the act.

A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

Report from the scribes mention that the creature could permanently lose access to her magics should we continue removing her cores. Conversely she may be able to use her magic if she was holding her core even if she no longer possessed it.

  …

  17-12-1704

  …

I handed her the blood magic core. She looked at me and did not understand. Upon telling her to cast a bit of magic she reported she had not created a blood magic spell yet. I pointed out that she had body morphic magic and that she can just change something about her body. She asked what I wanted changed. I told her to change her eyes to Elf ones. The slit cat eyes become round Elven ones. They remained the same muddy grey they always were. When asked why she had not picked a brighter Elven color she only remarked she was never able to change her eye color. A mental block perhaps? The girl was morose about the lack of colors.

The test was conclusive. I gave the order. She is to remove her cores as they come in, except for the blood mana core. She is to alternate shattering and igniting that one, it is after all unique. She became sullen at the command. I had her surrender the blood core to me. Her eyes reshifted after letting go of the core. It was expected, she can't maintain changes without her blood magic. I commissioned one of my artisans to craft an amulet to protect the core and for her to wear when we make changes and to lock them in.

  …

  27-12-1704

  …

The tails are whispers of their former selves. Aside from the blood one. I had halted the order to check on the progress. The arcane tail was a bit more than the other three but it will be gone soon enough. I ordered her to resume the order and the cores that shattered were the size of pebbles. Not long now. Changing her body has proved difficult. The greater the change the faster the core drained. Going by her skills, I recall that if we could maintain a change the cost should go down. Our growing collection of blood cores should supplement further changes. She severed another portion of her tapestry today. I've noticed the threads are starting to reach out and attempt to integrate it more into her main tapestry. I can only surmise that her soul rebels at the work and wishes to protect its ill gotten gains. There are still portions her soul does not care about.

  …

  28-12-1704

  …

The creature was collapsed on the floor. I demanded she rise. She struggled with it. When asked what the issue was she said it felt like something had been driven into her soul. I had looked at her Tapestry and saw that a part was weakening. I relayed my observation which only made her panic. I asked if there was any way she could protect her Tapestry. I could not allow for her soul to be shattered. Not when she had the first sinners. She said perhaps she could store her memories into her soul core but it can't fit her entire soul. I order her to do so. Her entire Tapestry winked out. She collapsed. When she rose, she looked at me with curiosity. She asked me who I was. I must admit this was a most welcome development. I told her I was her mother. She gave me a big toothy smile. They were all daggers of teeth. More things to fix.

The scribes request a test implantation of a blood core. I agreed.

  …

  29-12-1704

  …

The lab was a wreck. Three Elves were dead. From the lead scribe I learned that at first the implantation resulted in only the subject life magic becoming blood magic. Upon using the core the individual reported feeling thirsty. The subject had become increasingly irate as time went on. Attempts to feed the subject blood did not slake their thirst. It seems while they were crippled by the girl's curse, their body was incapable of satisfying it. Questioning the girl would be pointless. She, after all, remembers nothing now.

  …

  4-13-1704

  …

Her soul presence is smaller. Whatever was damaging her Tapestry is still pulling at her soul. Will she die should her soul dwindle to nothing? Or will it start pulling on her core. I asked her if she could ask her core questions. To perhaps query her memories without pulling them out. She only tilted her head at me. She remembers my orders even though she has no memories. I ordered her to recall anything she knew that could slowly devour a soul. What proceeded next was bizarre. The girl had stiffened and started having rapid eye motions. As if reading at a very high rate. She stopped then turned to me, she said fountain barriers were used to siphon monsters with titles souls in a rather monotone voice. I asked to explain further which only had her tilt her head again. Whatever she did to recall the memory fled her the moment she was done speaking.

  …

  8-13-1704

  …

The girl collapsed after shattering a core. When asked what was wrong she only said something felt gone. I told her she could stop breaking cores for the time being. I brought her a necklace made from 7 of her blood cores. After putting it on I ask her to fix her teeth. She only tilted her head again. Telling her to make them Elven only repeated the gesture. Finally I told her to make them like mine. She asked to see them. I obliged at which point she nodded to herself and then engaged the magic. The necklace almost drained empty but it held in the end.

  …

  9-13-1704

  …

The creature's teeth are back. She apparently took off the necklace during the night claiming it was uncomfortable. We will need to wait for the necklace to recharge.

I received a report from my observer of the Atlas-Bronfkin war. Apparently the bloody priestess has been sent to the front. While she identifies as tier four she fights as if she has tier five stats. Her race is now Tibyder which apparently has a spider lower half and human upper half. The observer can only conclude that she must have gained a few new tier ten skills allowing her access to higher thresholds. Not an issue then, the priestess will simply run into her threshold and be back to waiting on tiering again. So long as Atlas recalls her after hitting tier five.

  …

  11-13-1704

  …

A tail is missing. The void one. A most excellent result. I instructed her to resume breaking her cores. Including the blood one. We have enough cores and they are useless for implanting. I told her to fix her teeth again. The necklace is not draining as much this time. Also a good result. A further instruction to not remove the necklace was given.

  …

  18-13-1704

  …

She collapsed again. I told her to break the next one anyways. She lost consciousness. She has not yet woken.

  …

  21-13-1704

  …

The girl finally awoke. She immediately broke her cores again. Only two left. I had her attempt to make her ears Elven. The necklace ran out of mana. I told her to spare the blood core until it is ignited again. Some of these changes seem more ingrained than others. Perhaps a greater amount of blood cores should be stockpiled.

  …

  27-13-1704

  …

Another collapse. Down to one core. She will need to let it ignite a few more times before we get back to alternating. We change one ear to being Elven. The necklace almost ran out of mana but held in the end. She looks rather queer. When told this, she lifted her dress and used one of those bizarre hip eyes she has to look at herself. What happened next was dangerous.

She began laughing. The attendants in the room all started laughing as well. They then started harming themselves. It only increased her laughter. I was unaffected. I quickly told her to stop laughing. She did but I could see in her eyes that she trembled in mirth. I then gave her a new order. Never laugh again. Of all the cruel things I have done. I think stealing a child's laughter is one of the worst.

  …

  1-1-1705

  …

A new year. Another anniversary of my reign. I am morose at what led to my reign. The claiming of sovereignty. I can only blame the girl for my mood. She has the first sinner Tapestry after all.

I had given my proposal to the Elf king to purge all hybrids. He had denied it, telling me I was cruel and was in mourning. I slew him there and claimed his throne. Many Elves fought my rule. I killed every last one of them. My level rose, my skills had too. In the end I created a self propagating geas. I placed it on my children, Vancea and Sencea. It didn't take long before every Elf was reborn under my lineage. It is lonely being the oldest Elf…

I must be growing prone to whimsy. A confession, at my age.

  …

  9-1-1705

  …

The girl had finally finished changing her ears. I had her remove an eye on her hip next. The necklace had enough capacity to remove three. It has been a slow process. I should be able to hand her off to the scribes soon. On that note, I requested a general to prepare me a bottle of his blood.

  …

  10-1-1705

  …

The girl coughed up the blood. She is incapable of imbibing any blood other than mine. I commanded her to show me her skills again. In Embrace Thirst 2 the contract did say exclusivity. More distressing, in Vampiric Blood Kinesis 2, I notice the part about a separate blood store. I asked her how much blood she had stored of mine. 3 pints was her answer, almost half. In only two more months I would have died to this monster. I told her she was to consume the blood. She consumed it all. Though she did not laugh, her body shuddered, her aura ballooned out and my attendants once more started going into hysterics.

I was unable to prevent their deaths. I demanded their souls not be eaten. Even while not lucid the monster obeyed. The horror did not end at that. Instead of their Tapestries returning to our collective soul, their bodies rose. Their souls were moving their corpses. I had to incinerate the blasphemies to release them. I suspect their Tapestries to be torn from the trauma. I told the monster to push the ‘bliss’ to the other side of her soul from now on. I had grown too lax with this creature. Her calling me mother had made me forget what it really was. She looked at me with sad eyes even as she confirmed that it had been done.

I wrote a missive giving priority to the rebirth of the latest deaths. To both pay for this tragedy I caused and to evaluate the damage to their souls. A nagging thought concerned me. I wrote a missive to Macknor. I needed to know what became of Sara Maxwell Magdeline other half.
