Chapter 6: Nightmare

By the time Shane woke up, it was still the middle of the night.

As Shane looked at the time, it was 2:28 a.m. As he saw the time, he wondered why he woke up in the middle of the night.

Since Shane couldn’t fall back asleep, he got up from bed and headed toward the kitchen to get some water.

By the time he got to the kitchen, he could feel the coldness of the floor on his feet. It was colder than usual, but Shane paid it no mind since it was the middle of the night.

As Shane drank his water, he began to notice something was off. As he looked up at the window in the living room, he saw it wasn’t moonlight illuminating the area in front of his house.

In place of the calming moonlight, he noticed a dark crimson light starting to take over the surrounding area.

As he looked up at the crimson light, he now knew that something was utterly wrong. Without hesitation, he ran toward Mona's room to see if she was still peacefully sleeping.

“Mona!” shouted Shane as he opened the door.

But when Shane opened the door to Mona's room, he didn’t see anyone there, not even Mona, who was supposed to be sleeping.

As Shane looked at the bed where Mona was supposed to be sleeping, he heard banging from outside.

“Mona, is that you? Why are you outside?!” screamed Shane as he ran toward the front door to see what was causing the banging sound he heard.

As Shane opened the door, he saw a blood moon glowing crimson around them.

As he looked around, he realized he was not in his neighborhood. He was now in a place that resembled Victorian England. The spot where his house was supposed to stand was now a run-down pub.

Everything about this place was completely different than where Shane came from. The air he breathed felt like ash was going into his body, and even the temperature felt as if it could burn you alive. And even around him, he could hear screams coming from people as if they were dying.

As Shane looked around even more to see if he could figure out where he was, he saw a ton of corpses, as the place he was at was just a battlefield. No matter where Shane looked, he would see someone's body. Even as he covered his mouth and nose to try to avoid the smell of the area, it wasn’t enough. He could still smell the scent of the rotting corpses around him.

Where am I? Is this a nightmare? If so, why can I feel everything around me? Thought Shane as he looked closer at the blood moon.

  “Shane. Please stop.”

That voice belongs to Mona, so she is here, thought Shane, looking back to see where the voice was coming from.

As Shane saw what was behind him, it almost made him want to throw up at the sight he saw.

“No, no, no, no, no, what happened here. Who did this?!” Shane shouted as he saw whose bodies were behind him.

As Shane looked at the bodies behind him, he realised that they weren’t just random people, but they were his friends.

As Shane got a closer look, he saw that all his friends had multiple slash wounds around their bodies, with Franco, Ivan, Alexa, and Everet missing a limb. To the right of them, he saw Alicia and Elena next to each other, with their bodies being cut in half.

In between them, he saw Mona being covered by the corpse of Nathan as if he sacrificed himself to protect Mona. But as Shane looked at Mona, he saw that she had a stab wound in her gut, so he knew that she wouldn’t survive for much longer.

“Shane, you have to control yourself. You have to remember who you are. You need to stop. This isn’t what your friends would have wanted,” said Mona as her voice started to get quieter as she began to lose consciousness.

Shane looked in the direction his sister had been looking before she passed. He saw someone in the middle of the blood moon. It was as if this person were controlling the moon.

The person wore a purple jacket with lighting accents, draped from his back to his legs. The jacket's hood hid his face, and the face mask covered his mouth. Under the coat, he wore a purple shirt with black pants. In his arms, he had a katana on his left and a broad sword on his right.

“Blood Moon crimson light pierce,” said the hooded figure.

Wait. That's my voice. Did I do all of this? If I did, why? And who am I currently attacking? Is this really a dream, or does it feel too real? Thought Shane as he was frozen in place by the power he felt. The power felt dark, as if there were no good within him anymore.

“Stoooop!” screamed Shane as he woke up in his bed.

Shane was now back in his bed. As he looked around, the glare of the Sun pierced his eyes as he looked up. As he looked at his arm, it was completely shaking due to his nightmare.

Shane was fully covered in sweat because of the terrible nightmare that he had. As he picked up his phone, he saw that it was nine in the morning.

As Shane got up from his bed, the first thing he did was to check up on Mona in her room.

When Shane slightly opened the door to Mona's room, he felt relieved to see that his sister was still sleeping peacefully.

As Shane closed the door, he headed to his dad's office to see if anything was wrong.

When he entered the office, he saw that everything seemed the same as the last time he checked. Shane would often check his father's office for clues about where he was. But whenever he checked, he found nothing; it was like his father had never even entered this room.

Why didn’t you leave a note anywhere, Dad? Was it you who put that dream in my mind? What was that power? It made me feel like I couldn’t move; it was haunting, as if evil had completely taken me over. If only you had given me even a hint of this power before you disappeared, thought Shane as he closed the door.

Another thought came to his head. Why was Mona older in my dream? I just realized now that she looked like she was 10 or 11. So what if this wasn’t a dream? What if it's something that's going to happen in the future? If it is, I have to gain enough power in order to avoid that outcome.

As Shane walked toward the kitchen to make breakfast for Mona, he felt a sense of sorrow for not being able to protect Mona.

When Shane reached the kitchen, he decided to mix up some pancake batter for breakfast. Shane would always make pancakes on Saturday because their father had done it, and it had become a little family tradition. Shane wanted to keep it going for Mona's sake.

About thirty minutes later, he heard Mona coming from the hallway. As he heard her tiny footsteps come near the kitchen, he lifted his head to see her face.

When she entered the kitchen, she could smell the freshly made pancakes Shane had made.

“Good morning, Mona. You woke up just in time to eat the pancakes when they’re just freshly made.”

“Yay. Did you make them with chocolate chips like last time?”

“Yes. I know those are your favorites. Plus, I’m hoping this will motivate you to actually finish your homework today instead of leaving it until the last minute,” said Shane as he stared at Mona with a menacing face.

“Hey, just so you know, I don’t have that much homework today, so I should be able to finish it today. And if you have some free time today, can you help me practice for tomorrow's game? I want to make sure that I play well so I can play even more minutes later.”

“Yeah, I should have enough free time today, so I’ll practice with you today after I finish my training with the swords.”

“Why do you keep training with swords even now that Dad is gone. I thought you always hated training with them,” said Mona as she looked at Shane with confusion written on her face.

“I kinda came to enjoy practicing my swordsmanship with them recently, probably because I’m no longer forced to train with them.”

“Oh, okay. Can you teach me someday?”

“Sure, maybe when you're older, I’ll consider teaching you, but you have to get stronger.”

“Okay, then one day I’ll make you teach, and I’ll get stronger than you, so you better be ready to lose.”

As they stopped talking in order to finish eating, Shane thought, I don’t know if I should teach her how to use a sword, especially after what I saw in my nightmare. I have to make sure she stays out of danger, no matter what happens. So far, I can only assume that I lost control of my power and caused a lot of harm in a fit of rage.

  Knock, Knock

As Shane and Mona finished eating, they heard a knock at the front door.

“Hey Mona, can you wash the dishes today? I have to go see who's at the door?”

“Sure,” said Mona as she got up from the chair and went to pick up the dishes on the table.

As Shane got up from his seat, he headed straight to the front door. When he opened the door, he saw a muscular man taller than he was, wearing a casual outfit. The man had sky-blue hair, just like Alicia.

“Hey, Shane, Alicia said you wanted to talk to me today,” said the man with a pleasant smile on his face.

“Good morning, Mr. Ravenscroft. Yeah, there's something important that I need to talk about.”
