Chapter 10: Whats Your Name?

As Arthur watched Shane make his first attack, he wondered whether he could even block it. The lights were still off; the only thing he could see was a crescent moon getting closer to Arthur.

As soon as Shane struck his katana, Arthur was sent flying into the wall. As Arthur hit the wall, part of the cave collapsed, and dust was sent flying in the air.

As Shane saw that he sent Arthur flying toward the wall, he screamed, “Arthur, are you alright. I didn’t think that attack would be so strong. I still don’t have a full grasp of how to control my power output.”

As Shane saw Arthur getting up from the area that he was sent towards, he saw that Arthur had sustained some injuries with cuts in the area that Shane swung at. None of them looked too deep, but he still worried because of how hard he had hit the wall.

“Hey, don’t worry, kid. I’ll be alright. I’ve already lived for 200 years, and I’m not planning on dying any time soon.”

“You sure. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“Yeah, I’m sure. Trust me, that was nothing compared to when I used to spar against your dad. Last time we sparred, I lost my arm, so this was nothing.”

“Just how strong was my father?”

“Well, he was the strongest amongst us generals. Just like you, he was able to control lightning. But I’ve never seen him do the attack you just did.”

“Yeah, he only taught me the basics when it came to fighting with swords. So that was an attack I came up with on my own when I continued practicing without him. I only thought I could do it since the fallen angel version of myself used a similar attack,” Shane said, as he thought back to the nightmare he had that night.

As Arthur looked at Shane, he no longer saw the boy who called himself weak; he saw someone determined to protect the ones he loved. Arthur would see Shane’s father within him every time he spoke about protecting the one he loved.

“So that attack was completely yours. It seems like you have quite the terrifying potential. You could even surpass your dad within a couple of years as your power continues to grow and gain more control over it,” Arthur said proudly as he looked at Shane.

“You think. I don’t care about being the most powerful. I only want to use this power to protect those I care about. So I’ll defeat the demon king if that means the people I care about will be safe. I’ve been meaning to ask, what is the time?”

“I don’t know, I haven’t checked on the time since we been here. Wait here, I’ll go check my phone to see what time it is.”

As Shane saw Arthur head toward the area where they'd left their things. He wondered how he would tell his friends about this. He thought that if he told them about this, it would change their life completely.

How do I explain any of this to my friends? How am I even going to tell Mona that we're part angels and that the reason our father disappeared was that he had to fight a demon king? How is she going to react to this? I hate it when I have to keep secrets from her, but this is something that she can’t know about for now.

  “Hey Shane”

As Shane heard Arthur, he was brought out of his thoughts.

“Huh. Yeah, so what time is it?”

  “It's 9 p.m.”

“It’s that late, wow, time just went by. I still thought it was early.”

“Well, you were passed out for a while once your power partially awakened. And you couldn’t move for a good while. So it's not surprising that it's that late. So, how about we just buy something to eat on the way home? I’m pretty sure Mona has eaten already, so you don’t have to worry about that.”

“Ok. Did I do well today. I was just wondering, since I’m still getting used to this power, and I really want to know how to hide my katana and dagger. I still don’t want Mona and Alicia to find out.”

“Yeah, you did great today. I don’t think anyone else would have been able to gain that much control over their power like you. You really are something special. And in order to hide your katana and dagger, just say close your soul and the name of your swords.”

“How do I know the names of these?” said Shane as he looked at the katana in his right hand and the dagger in his left.

“Just close your eyes and concentrate on swords in your mind. Their names will show up; you just have to find them.”

  “Okay”

As Shane closed his eyes, he started to imagine his katana and dagger. As soon as he thought of them, they appeared in his hands again. His mind was filled with complete darkness, and the lightning from his katana and dagger was the only thing lighting up the area near him. As he looked around, Shane couldn’t see anything, so he even wondered if his katana and dagger had a name or if he was supposed to come up with one for them.

As Shane kept on walking in his mind, he saw memories of the one he cared about pop out as if they were clues to what his sword's names were. As he continued walking through his memories, he saw that there were always two names that seemed close to him, even though he never heard of them before, or at least he couldn’t remember them until he saw two people say them.

This text was taken from Royal Road. Help the author by reading the original version there.

The first name came from Mona when she was talking about an old methodology for a school project she had. The second came from Elena when she was talking about random space facts.

As soon as Shane heard the names that Mona and Elena said, he looked at his katana and dagger, which seemed to have created even more lightning as Shane thought of the name.

So those are your names. I would never have expected to have heard your names before. And who would have guessed that it was those two who said it? Shanethought as he continued to look at the katana and dagger in his hand.

As soon as Shane opened his eyes, he said, “Close your souls, Mika, and Enyo.”

As Shane blurted out what Arthur told him to say, he saw that the katana and dagger in his hands began to disappear, as if they were never there. The only thing that came out before they disappeared was a bolt of purple lightning that went toward Shane's body.

“So it seems like you figured out their names. So, in the future, if you want them to appear, just say, bare your soul, then their names. The only reason they appeared today without you needing to say their names was that your power awakened. I probably shouldn’t have to say this, but please don't use them outside of this cave, or the angels might be able to find you. You can go out of the cave now because your power is concealing itself within you, so no one will find out that you're an angel.”

As Shane listened to Arthur, he saw that Arthur's injuries were fully healed. And as he looked at his arms, the lightning scars he got the moment his powers partially awakened were still there. He wondered how long it would take to heal fully and how he would hide from the others until he told the other about his power.

“Hey Shane, you still listening?” said Arthur as he saw that Shane was going into a world of his own.

“Yeah, I heard everything, and you don’t have to worry about me showing off these powers outside this cave. I’m not that much of an idiot.”

“Okay, that's good. And I know you're probably wondering about those lightning marks across your arms.”

“Yeah, I was just wondering how long they will take to heal.”

“Well, in your case, with the amount of power you possess, I’ll probably say they’ll go away within a week or two. So if you want to hide them, wear a long-sleeve shirt or a jacket.”

As soon as Shane heard that his scars would disappear within a week or two, he was relieved to hear that they weren’t permanent. His scars didn’t hurt, but it would be hard to explain how he got them since he can’t tell just anyone that he’s part angel, so it was good that they would disappear soon.

  “That's good to hear.”

“Yeah, don’t worry about it, son. So how did those names come to mind?”

“Well, the name Enyo came from Mona. She said the name when she was talking about some old mythology, and it seemed like the right name for my dagger. And the name Mika came from Elena. She mentioned it when talking about random facts of the moon, and it seems right for my katana.”

“Those are some nice names; they really suit your katana and dagger. So, should we head home and pick up some food?”

“Yeah. I don’t think I will be able to cook today. And Arthur, I do think of you as my second father, and I’m pretty sure the same could be said for Mona.”

When Arthur heard that Shane considered him like a father, he wept with joy, as if he had been waiting for this moment.

“Why are you crying. I thought you already knew that we consider you as our father. You have been trying to help us since our biological father disappeared,” said Shane as he awkwardly looked at Arthur, crying.

“S-s-s-sorry, I just thought I would never hear you call me like your father, so this is a big moment for me. Will you start calling me dad from now on?” said Arthur as he continued to cry tears of joy.

“No, I promised Alicia that I wouldn’t call you dad because she said if I did, she would kill me, and I don’t doubt it. But I do think of her as my annoying little sister. And I think we should start heading home.”

  “Okay, son.”

As they left the cave, they felt the coldness of the night air, and the only light they could see came from the moon. The only sound they could hear came from crickets.

“So, where do you want to eat, son? It’ll be my treat for all the hard work you put in today.”

“I don’t really care where we eat, so you can choose.”

“Ok, so what about burgers? There's a good place nearby I used to go with your old man.”

“Yeah, that sounds good. I’m super hungry and exhausted, so I couldn't care less where we go.”

As they decided where to eat, they got in Arthur's car to get food as fast as possible so they could get home before midnight. Before they got to the burger place that Arthur had mention he gave Shane a long-sleeve shirt to hide his scars.

  ***

As Shane and Arthur arrived home, it was 11:27 p.m. As Shane headed towards his home, he looked back to say, “Goodnight, Arthur.”

  “Good night, son.”

As Shane neared the front door, he heard the TV in the living room.

Is Mona still up? I thought she would have been sleeping by now. I know she can rarely stay up late.

As Shane opened the front door, he saw Mona asleep in her pajamas beside Alicia, who was still awake, watching TV.

As soon as Alicia saw Shane enter through the front door, she said, “Hey Shane, so you finally decided to come home.”

“I’m sorry for keeping you up. I didn’t know how long it would take. And why are you here with Mona?”

“Well, my mom offered her our guest room, but she kept on refusing, saying she wanted to wait until you got home. So I decided to wait with her at your house until you got home.”

“This little sister of mine really is something.”

Shane had expected something like this to happen, given how attached Mona was to him. Whenever he was out late doing something important, Mona would wait for him. A year ago, she wasn’t like this, but since their father's disappearance, she had waited for Shane, hoping he wouldn’t disappear like their father.

“Well, she said she wasn’t going to sleep until you got here, but it looks like she couldn’t keep that promise. So what were you doing with my dad?”

“Sorry, but I can’t tell you that just yet. I’ll tell you on Friday when we're hanging out with the others. This is something that you all have to know, so just wait until then.”

“Okay, but if you don’t, I’ll slap you in the back of the head. Well, I’m leaving now, so I’ll see you tomorrow, and goodnight,” said Alicia as she started to head toward the front door.

  ‘Yeah, goodnight.”

Before leaving, Alicia looked back, noticing that something was off with Shane. But she didn’t confront him then, because it was so late.

As Shane saw Alicia leave, he closed the door and turned off the TV. The moment he turned off the TV, the only thing he was able to hear was Mona snoring on the couch. Then he headed toward Mona to carry her to her bed.

As soon as Shane put Mona on her bed, he headed toward his room so he could sleep. As soon as he touched his bed, he fell asleep from all his training.
