Chapter Fifty-Eight: The Temple’s Heartbeat

The corridor past the Aegis sloped downward into silence. There were no torches to illuminate the path just pale blue veins glowing through the stone. The air vibrated softly, each pulse syncing with Kaiden’s heartbeat.

  thump… thump… thump.

  [Area Effect Detected: Resonance Field]

  AP Drain: -2/sec

  Overflow Build: +15%

Naō scanned the readout. “The temple’s draining stamina just by standing here.”

Ironstride raised her shield. “We should keep moving so we aren’t wasting pressure time and health.”

They pushed on through warped hallways, roots jutting from the ground like ribs. Ahead, a chamber opened into a maze of fractured mirrors. Their reflections didn’t move with them, they lagged behind by half a second, replaying their actions out of sync.

The reflections rippled. Three silhouettes stepped out, twisted glass copies of Kaiden, Naō, and Ironstride.

  [Mid-Boss Encounter: Echo Sentinels x3]

  Level: 13

Trait: Mimic Pattern / Reflective Body

  Weakness: Shadow, Unstable Resonance

Ironstride lowered her stance. “Looks like they’ll copy whatever we do.”

“Then let’s hit harder than they can keep up,” Kaiden said.

The first Sentinel lunged. Kaiden parried, sparks flying and attacked with blunt force.

  [-12 LP]

Naō hurled a Corrosive Draught. It splashed across the floor, burning into glass.

  [DEF -10% | DoT (12s)]

Then the mirrored Naō mirrored him, throwing its own vial.

  [-26 LP | DEF -10%]

“Okay, that’s just rude,” Naō muttered, rolling back.

Ironstride slammed into another with a shield bash and taking out [-88 LP]. She gained Aggro from it, but her reflection immediately mirrored the move and proceed to give [-30 LP] to Ironstride.

Kaiden spun into motion, activating Twilight Rend. His double-bladed scythe cut a glowing crescent through the first Sentinel’s torso.

[Critical Hit! -142 | Core exposed]

The copy responded with the same move. Kaiden blocked it, sliding backward. His LP dipped under half. [-60 LP | LP: 41%]

Ironstride shouted, “We need a rhythm. Don’t overlap skills.”

This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.

Kaiden ignored her. He darted in low, chaining Bleeding Horizon. The scythe struck twice, shadow petals bursting on impact. [Hit x2 | -112, -134 | Bleed Applied]. The reflection mimicked it again, slashing backward toward him but Kaiden was ready this time. He rolled left, countered, and called out: “Naō, it's your open window. Go, now.”

  Naō hurled Stunburst Phial.

  [Stun Success – 2.1s]

Ironstride surged in with Linked Chain Defense, taking control of the fight.

  [DEF Buff: +10% (Allies, 10s)]

Kaiden could feel it boiling in his chest. One bad hit and he’d trigger collapse, but he didn’t hesitate.

  “Overflow.”

Water burst outward from Kaiden’s boots, rippling in a ring. His cloak shredded into streams of blue mist.

  [Overflow Mode Active]

  ATK +25% | AGI +20%

  LP Regen Disabled

Kaiden blurred forward, chaining three skills in a single breath. Each swing left trails of phosphorescent water that detonated in miniature whirlpools.

  [Combo Chain: 3x | Damage: 385 Total]

  The first Sentinel shattered.

[Enemy Defeated: Echo Sentinel α | EXP +260]

A warning blinked red and Kaiden’s LP had dropped below 40%. Then, without his command, a phantom version of Kaiden stepped out, semi-transparent and moving on its own. It replayed the exact combo he’d just used.

Phantom Veil Activated: Memory Chain Successful

The ghost hit the second Sentinel:

  [Damage: 50% of Original | -178 Total]

[Enemy Defeated: Echo Sentinel β | EXP +280]

Ironstride stared. “Did you just… clone yourself?”

Kaiden’s breathing hitched. “Guess so. Not complaining.” The ghost dissolved back into mist.

Only one Sentinel remained. It was different now, its body crackled with dark water. It had copied his Overflow.

“Of course,” Kaiden said. “Let’s end this quick.”

He dashed in first. The reflection mirrored perfectly, both striking simultaneously, mirror scythes colliding in a wave of energy.

  [-28 LP | LP: 24%]

  Naō yelled, “You’re too low!”

“Not stopping now,” Kaiden yelled, pivoting mid-spin. He positioned to flank to the right, baiting the Sentinel forward, then unleashed Drown the Sun.

The entire floor erupted into a flood of black water. The impact swallowed the Sentinel whole.

  [Critical! -410 | Slow Applied]

[Enemy Defeated: Echo Sentinel γ | EXP +310 | Loot: Echo Fragment x1]

The mirrored floor fractured, then went dark. No more reflections. Only the pulse of Kaiden’s Photosphere remained.

  [Battle Complete]

  Total EXP: +850

  Loot Acquired: Echo Fragments x3

Overflow ended leaving Kaiden gasping and down to 19% LP. Naō tossed a high-grade tonic his way. [+65 LP Restored]

Ironstride wiped her brow. “That move…your gem just fought for you.”

Kaiden flexed his hand. The Photosphere’s light ran through his veins and faded. “It’s called Phantom Veil. It copies my last move when I’m near collapse.”

Naō smirked. “So it remembers you when you can’t fight.”

Kaiden gave a tired grin. “Or it refuses to let me die.”

They advanced deeper through the temple. The air thickened, hot and heavy with an earthly scent. Dripping roots hung from the ceiling, each giving off a faint light. The hum in the walls grew louder with every step.

  thump… thump… thump.

[Map Updated: Core Chamber] [Access Unlocked]

Naō checked his HUD. “We’re close. The temple’s main core should be right below us.”

The path opened into a vast cavern. Roots spiraled upward, fusing with black coral. At the center hovered a floating crystalline heart.

[Quest Objective Updated: Investigate the Core]

Kaiden stepped closer. His Photosphere perfectly in sync with the crystal’s heartbeat.

  [Resonance Alignment: 99%]

  Warning: Cognitive Drift Detected

The crystal pulsed twice and split open. Inside, an enormous obsidian eye stared back.

[Main Questline: Collapse of Day – Progress 3/5]

Objective: Defeat the Watcher of Ashroot

The crystal’s light inverted, black at the center, white around the edges. The floor fractured beneath their feet.
