The Sea Dragon was sentient.
I had assumed it was, but the verification still took me by surprise. I’d assumed that it was merely primal urges and simple commands, but that it was able to form a full sentence was enough to convince me that it was capable of thoughts.
“What are you?” I pulled my arm out of the serpent’s mouth.
“YOU ARE FOOD!” The creature snapped its jaws at me.
“Not what I asked.” I raised the struggling monster up so I could look into its yellow cat’s eyes. “What are you?”
“I EAT.” The Sea Dragon snarled. “IF I EAT ENOUGH, I BECOME GOD.”
“You’re trying to become a God?” I raised an eyebrow. “How?”
“DIE!” The ornery monster slapped me across the face with its tail.
I punched it in the nose.
The second time that it tried to slap me, I caught its tail with my free hand. I glared at the struggling serpent.
“You can keep trying to fight and I can kill you or you can answer my questions.” I pulled the tail to straighten the monster out. “Your choice.”
“THE GOD LIES! HE CHEATS!”
I sighed. “Fine, death it is.” I squeezed its neck.
“WAIT! I TALK!”
I released some of the pressure.
“THE GOD LETS ME GO.”
“Nope.” I shook my head. “You tried to kill me and my friends and you keep attacking me, so I’m going to hold you like this until I can trust you.”
“DIRTY GOD.” It hissed at me.

I tilted my head to the side. “Do you really think insults are wise?”
A low growl rolled out of its throat, but no words or hisses followed.
“Better.” I took a deep breath. “Now, what are you?”
“I EAT THE GODS AND GROW POWERFUL.” It relaxed a little in my hands.
“How?” I thought about loosening my grip more, but there was something about the way it was relaxing that I didn’t trust.
“GODS MANTLES MAKE ME STRONG.” It lifted its head a little. “THE MORE GODS I EAT, THE CLOSER I BECOME TO A GOD.”
I waffled my head. “So what you’re saying is that if I let you go, you’re going to try to kill me again.”
The serpent was silent for too long and I could see it thinking about how to answer the question.
“If you’re taking this long, then the answer is yes.” I sighed. “I wonder if I’m going to get a PK tag for killing you.”
“WAIT! I CAN EAT YOUR ENEMIES! YES, WE BECOME FRIENDS!” The serpent tensed, straining to pull itself out of my hands.
I tightened my grip on its neck and tail. I waited until it stopped struggling to address it.
“Why should I trust you when every time I start to let you go, you try to attack me?” I shook my head and nodded up at the black void above us. “Look, your body is dying out there anyway. As long as you’re in here, your body is paralyzed out there and with how fast you were losing blood, you aren’t going to last long.”
“DIRTY GOD! CHEATING GOD!” The Sea Dragon strained again, but it was getting weaker.
“See?” I shook my head as I looked down at it. “It’s over. All I have to do is keep you in here until your body dies.” I sat down as it resumed struggling. There was a part of me that felt sad as I watched the creature get weaker and weaker, but this was a predator. One that ate people like me. So while there was a part of me that felt for the creature, I couldn’t allow it to live, because eventually, it would come after me or someone I cared about again.
I didn’t have to wait very long before the monster stopped struggling. Its eyes glossed over and it went limp in my hands. I thought about dropping it, but I wanted to be sure that it wasn’t a trick, so I squeezed it a little harder. After a few seconds the body in my hand burst into smoke, dropping a blue crystal the size of my finger at my feet.
The moment I picked up the crystal, a text box appeared.
Sea Dragon Summon
Soulbound on use
Requires Divine Class, Level 60, 640 Magic, and Water Affinity.
“Well, I’m not going to be using this for a while.” I touched the blue crystal to the CB on my left wrist. The crystal vanished into my item storage. “I wasn’t planning on taking water as my affinity either.” I sighed. Most of Ether’s skills were leaning towards the light element and both Rix and Nakten used mostly dark element skills. I wasn’t sure what Pixie was going to take, but she didn’t strike me as someone who’d want water.
“I guess I’ve got plenty of time to find someone who can use this.” I closed my eyes and focused on leaving my mindspace. It was time to check on the others.
