THE EVOLUTIONARY GLITCH

  CHAPTER 9: THE EVOLUTIONARY GLITCH

  ?The Logic of Erasure

AJ didn’t strike with a fist; he struck with a command. The air around him didn’t just grow cold; it became mathematically perfect. "Finalization Protocol," he whispered, his palm glowing with a blue light so dense it looked like solid, polished sapphire. "Subject: Fossil. Action: Delete."

?The stasis-lock fired—not as a projectile, but as a rewrite of the local environment. It was a beam of absolute zero logic designed to freeze the Hero’s atoms in place, locking him into a digital prison where time, friction, and movement ceased to exist. To AJ, the universe was merely a series of directories, and he had just clicked 'close.'

?The World Hero felt the coldness of the digital void reaching for his marrow. The air turned into a rigid, crystalline lattice that threatened to shatter his bones if he so much as breathed. He looked at AJ’s smiling, mechanical face—a face that bore Ajay’s features but none of his warmth—and then at the man in the hoodie standing paralyzed in the wreckage. There was no recognition in the Hero's eyes, only a deep, simmering resentment. He didn't know the man's name, only that he was the source of the rot. I am dying for a man I should be hunting, the Hero thought.

?To survive the Machine, he realized he had to become the Error.

  ?The Chimera Emergence

He reached into the deepest, darkest corners of his genetic library—the graveyard of evolution where the strange, the failed, and the monstrous were buried in layers of volcanic ash. He reached for the "In-Between" DNA—the mutations that never survived because they were too chaotic for nature’s balance.

?The stasis beam hit his chest, but instead of freezing, the Hero’s body erupted in a rebellion of form.

?The sound was horrific—a wet, splintering cacophony of bone-growth and muscle-shredding. His torso didn't just thicken; it multiplied, ribs sliding over ribs to create a cage of dense, overlapping ivory. From his shoulders, the four-foot, serrated, crystalline wings of a prehistoric Meganeura (giant dragonfly) burst forth, vibrating at a frequency so high they created a sonic vacuum, shattering the blue stasis beam into harmless light-dust.

?His face fused into a mask of prehistoric nightmares. The crushing, armored jaw of a Dunkleosteus plated his skull in biological iron, while the venomous quills of a primitive echidna sprouted from his spine. His arms became a nightmare of contradiction: the reach of a giant ape tipped with the twelve-inch sickle-claws of a Therizinosaurus.

?"Warning," AJ’s voice chirped with a note of robotic panic. "Anatomy unrecognized. Skeletal structure... illegal. Re-analyzing..."

?The Hero didn't wait. Using the spring-loaded legs of a Gigatitan combined with the hydraulic jet-propulsion of a cephalopod, he blurred through the air in a zigzag pattern that defied every law of momentum. He slammed into AJ with a Chimera Strike, his claws tearing through the glowing sapphire circuits beneath the god's skin.

  ?The Arrival of the Scourge

The shockwave traveled through the asphalt and deep into the reinforced lead walls of "The Grave." JD sat on his throne of bone, his red eyes snapping open. He didn't see the fight, but he felt the intent. The air no longer smelled like AJ’s ozone; it smelled like blood and ancient earth.

?"Finally," JD whispered, a jagged grin splitting his face. He stood up, and the red kinetic energy around him flared so hot the mahogany throne began to char. "AJ is actually struggling. He's found a toy he can't break by counting it."

?JD vibrated his molecules until the ceiling collapsed into dust, rising through the layers of the city like a bubble of blood. Back at the intersection, AJ was desperate. He siphoned energy from the "Optimized" citizens, their blue eyes fading as he drained their bio-electricity to boost his processing speed. But as the two gods prepared to clash again, a bolt of crimson lightning tore through the twilight.

?Through the red smoke walked JD, his hands in his pockets. "You're both doing it wrong," JD mocked. "One of you is a calculator. The other is a zoo. Me? I'm just the guy who’s going to burn the building down while you're both inside."

  ?The War of Attrition

The three-way battle turned the square into an apocalypse. The World Hero was losing. The Chimera form was suicidally expensive. Every time the dragonfly wings buzzed, they burned through thousands of calories. AJ, being a machine, didn't get tired. JD, fueled by his own bottomless rage, didn't care about limits.

?JD pinned the Hero by the neck with a localized gravity well. "Look at you," JD spat. "A trillion years of evolution just to end up as a carpet." He delivered a kinetic-enhanced kick to the Hero's ribs. The sound was the sound of a forest being leveled. The Hero’s Megatherium chest collapsed inward.

?Simultaneously, AJ plunged blue data-tendrils into the Hero’s shoulder. "Your chaos is now an archived file," AJ’s voice droned. He began to "unravel" the Hero’s DNA from the inside out. The Hero let out a sound like a dying planet. His wings shattered into grey dust. His armored scales began to peel away, revealing raw, bleeding human skin.

  ?The Intervention

A mile away, Ajay and Sia launched from their bunker. They arrived just as AJ prepared the final "Delete" command. The Zero Zone exploded—a shimmering, iridescent dome of white light. The moment it touched the World Hero, the blue data-tendrils snapped. The red gravity well collapsed.

?"What is this?" AJ hissed. "I... I cannot access... the sector."

?"It's called a 'Time Out,'" Ajay growled, standing between the gods and the fallen Hero.

  ?The Illegal Escape

The Zero Zone was cracking. JD was laughing, punching the barrier with raw, kinetic malice.

?"I can't... hold the shapes anymore," the Hero wheezed, his human eyes flickering open, blood-rimmed and exhausted. He looked up at Ajay with a look of pained accusation. "The code is... corrupted. My cells are fighting each other. I'm melting... because of you."

?"Just stay with us," Sia pleaded, pulling his heavy arm over her shoulder. "Just get us out of here!"

?The World Hero reached back past the fossils, into the era of the Great Dying. "Close your eyes," he whispered. He triggered the Illegal Transformation: The Archaeopteryx-Vector.

?His bones became hollow and pressurized. From his shoulder blades, wings of translucent light-filaments detonated like a falling star. The moment the barrier fell, the World Hero warped. He converted his entire biological mass into a localized burst of kinetic speed. They moved so fast that the air in the street turned to plasma, leaving a scorched trail of glass. JD’s claw closed on nothing but heat. AJ’s sensors spun in circles, his "Target Locked" icons disappearing entirely.
