Chapter 233.1: Bonus Chapter: The Dragon Hatchlings Part 1

Centuries have passed in order to cause a seemingly normal joyous occasion to become a historical event worthy of bringing the world to a near standstill. The mana fire in the Imperial territory is on everyone’s minds as the workers and soldiers of the Fievegal gear up to aid with relief and combat efforts, but for a brief moment of inspiration, surfaces of the Citadel have been converted into television screens via illusion magic in order to show all who have a moment this landmark day.

Hekate trembles as she watches. She can hear the chaotic squeaks, warbles, and squirms of small creatures hidden away from the world as three eggs sit in a circle on specially crafted pillowy cushions designed to keep them balanced and stable.

The feldrok teen was present when Jieka and Tekten were born, as well as Pomiel and Daugli. It’s a different process, but the same stakes.

And, while the goblin children, including Daniel’s youngest of the six, are precious, a dragon hasn’t hatched from an egg in the known world in hundreds of years.

Geirahoel is pacing around the group ‘nest’ in nervous anxiousness, while Reignleif sits in front of her egg, simply sketching the moments in a notebook. For her part, the most senior of the female dragons nibbles her own finger as she watches, cradling Fal, but unable to truly hide her own anxiousness behind her regal facade.

“Um… How come you don’t just open the shells yourself?” asks Hekate innocently as she watches.

Geirahoel halts, looking at her with horror on her face. She fidgets with her hands, unable to decide what she should be doing. Ryuogriar, who is usually so unflappable and wise, has also faltered to fear for a moment.

Reignleif answers, still sketching calmly, “If you do not yet know the truth, it is sometimes better to never learn it, rather than rush it along.” She adds, “A better way to look at it would probably be to call it a sort of rite of passage. The first test to prove our children are strong enough to live.”

  “But…”

“I know how that sounds saying it aloud,” interrupts Reignleif, looking up at Hekate for a moment. The feldrok girl can see something in the stoic blue dragon’s eyes she has never seen; true fear. In spite of their behavior, all three dragons are terrified. She adds softly with a bit of disappointment in her voice, “They will be fine. They have to be fine. But, we shouldn’t rush them.”

Wenlianna is standing near Hekate, which is a few yards away. The concern is that the hatchlings might become most attached to anyone close by, so everyone agreed to make sure that it’s their respective mothers, or, when he arrives, Daniel. That said, as the Empresses, they wanted to see it up close and personal.

The problem is the infiltrators, so they have to keep the in-person audience minimal, and Hekate and Wenlianna were each welcomed by Ryuogriar and Reignleif, specifically, while Geirahoel asked for Jieka and Tekten to be allowed to observe. The two goblin princesses will be brought in when the eggs start cracking, since it’s pretty boring otherwise. Though the hatchlings-to-be are making lots of noises and squirming around, none of the eggs have cracked just yet.

Suddenly, the door bursts open, and Hekate goes on guard. The rule was that no one was to be allowed to intrude with exactly four exceptions.

The first is obviously Daniel, but this time, it’s the second.

Jeavana rushes in with her own egg in her arms and a pillow barely clasped in her hands. She has a panicked expression on her face, and she exclaims, “I’m so sorry! Mine was supposed to be weeks behind!” Her eyes are watering, but she rushes to the circle and gently sets her egg down like the most precious thing in the world.

Just as she says, a slightly different voice, which is easily distinguishable to Hekate’s powerful ears, makes a sort of croaking sound of effort.

And then, a slight crunch that startles the golden dragon back onto her butt.

The entire room seems to have heard it, and the world comes to a stop, including Geirahoel.

  “I-I-It’s too soon!” panics Jeavana. “I… Wh-What if…!? What do I do!?”

The other three dragons are speechless, possessing no answers either. Ryuogriar once explained that the eggs should be able to ‘synchronize’ with each other, but the gap between Ryuogriar as the first and Geirahoel as the third was only a couple of weeks, while Jeavana was closer to two months.

“Can’t we just… let it run its course?” asks Wenlianna cautiously. “Mother said that Yormolett was born a bit earlier than expected, and she was small, but with medical care that Father ordered right away, she has been healthy since…”

“I’ve ordered Vae, Doephluev, Senn, and Baeka to be on standby,” states Hekate. She feels bad because she’s just as flustered as the dragons, particularly because the centuries-old women are losing their composure so much. “Also, Xyreko is retrieving the medical staff Aramellianna has on standby for the airship.”

Hekate then puts her palm on her demure chest. “I personally will ensure that every hatchling here lives long, happy lives.”

Ryuogriar and Jeavana scoff slightly, not in skepticism, per se, but the fact that the youngest person present, other than Fal, is the one trying to reassure them.

Another crunch, followed by a third crack causes all of the dragons to snap their gazes on their respective eggs, with Hekate’s ears perking up.

Jeavana’s egg is the furthest, with a nice long split appearing down the face of the egg which Hekate can see.

The golden dragon scrambles forward, cooing, “Yess, my baby. That’s it. Y-You can do it! Be strong! You’re winning!”

“It’s not a race,...” grumbles Reignleif. She pets her own egg, which is the furthest behind, by appearances. “Take your time, sweet child. Mama is here. I will wait for a hundred years if that’s what you need.”

“Can you not make one hundred years sound so casual?” asks Geirahoel anxiously as she crouches near her own egg. Hers is the one that gained the third chip, which quickly splits before her eyes. The youngest of the four dragons present now flinches back a little, but she watches with starry eyes in an instant.

Hekate and Wenlianna watch in astonishment from their positions a few yards away, and Fal starts to whine and squirm, threatening to distract Ryuogriar.

Thinking quickly, Hekate jogs forward and gently takes the baby feldrok from her, saying, “I’ll hold Fal.”

Ryuogriar smiles a little in relief, handing him over. “Thank you, Hekate… B-Be gentle. I’ll..”

  “Relax. I can handle him.”

The dragon smiles, glancing at her egg, and she finally nods. She also hands over a bottle for him, which the feldrok teen starts using to feed him as she retreats back to the observation area. The feldrok teen feels nervous holding her infant counterpart, since he’s in his true form. She knows in her heart that she is just like him, though she has spent almost no time in the more feral-looking form. His fur is starting to feel like a peach fuzz, and his limbs are getting a little more distinct, in spite of his premature existence. He also has the ability to close his eyes and angle his ears, so he is more observant.

But, he’s still the thing Hekate was raised to fear more than anything else in the world. She knows she has to get over that fear, since she can’t be afraid of her own children, but it’s going to take getting used to.

Thankfully, Fal is calm, isn’t presently emitting any harmful mana, and rather than an apex predator trying to kill everyone, he is just a baby like the ones working their way out of eggshells.

Jeavana urges playfully, trying to distract herself from how freaked out she is about the apparently premature hatching. “Go baby, go! Go! You can beat these silly princesses! I believe in you!”

There’s a distinct knock on the door, signalling Daniel’s arrival, and he enters. “Sorry I’m late. Contract’s taken care of and…”

Jeavana whirls, and her eyes start watering. “Harbinger! M-Mine’s early! I… What do I do!?”

“How the hell should I know?” retorts Daniel, surprised by her sudden complaints for help.

All four dragons rush to Daniel and drag him towards the eggs as they chatter for his attention, and Hekate can barely keep track of anything anyone says as the human is swept up.

“Geez! Calm down! If you’re so worried about it, crack them open yourselves!”

“Mukori!” shriek the Empresses, while simultaneously, Jeavana yells, “Harbinger!” They continue babbling like fools, and Hekate can’t help but snicker, while Wenlianna murmurs, “I… I hope I don’t get like that…”

Jeavana scolds Daniel, “They have to do it themselves!”

“Exactly!” yells Daniel with exasperation as he tries to talk over them. “There’s nothing for us to do but watch! So please, please calm down!”

The dragons simmer down a little, still clinging to Daniel. Hekate, seeing Jeavana and knowing more than she has let on with anyone else, decides she must intervene.

“Daniel, Jeavana was just trying to race the babies before you walked in.”

“I-...! That’s…!” The dragon grips Daniel’s shirt, and he laughs lightly.

“That’s better than this. What do you win if yours wins?” asks the mechanic playfully, encouraging a positive experience over panic.

  “I… It was just…”

“I know what I would ask for,” states Reignleif as she presses in close to Daniel’s chest. She smiles up at him expectantly.

“Yes, yes, Stenlyle’s cups and Lidodos.”

The three dragon Empresses look at Daniel with confused disgust, while Jeavana just expresses confusion.

Wenlianna, who already has her notebook out, scribbles the words down as best as she can sound them out.

A light crunching noise causes the dragons to immediately lose interest in figuring out what Daniel meant, and they immediately try to scatter back to their own eggs… with Daniel in tow.

“As the senior Empress,...” huffs Ryuogriar at the impasse.

“Nuh-uh! I’m the most scared because I’m the youngest!” snaps Geirahoel, not even letting her finish.

“You two steal all of Mukori’s time,” insists Reignleif. “He should help me sketch…”

Hekate growls impotently. She has managed to calm Fal down in spite of the chaotic dragons making so much noise. She doesn’t want to upset him and undo the work of calming him down, but she wants to pounce on all four of them. If they weren’t so distracted with the eggs and trying to drag Daniel to their own, the ravenette would believe they were mocking her.

“If you don’t let Mukori go to be with all of you, then I’m stealing him to watch over here,” warns Wenlianna, surprising everyone.

The dragons look at her, and then at Daniel. They finally stare each other down in a final standoff, and Geirahoel accuses, “Why are you even holding him?”

Jeavana flinches under her gaze, and she somewhat reluctantly releases Daniel.

“H-He’s… the Dragonlord… I’m… I’m allowed to request his reassurance and comfort as well… Th-This is…” Her egg cracks again, and she flinches, locking her eyes on it. Her hands squirm, and the Empresses nod at each other. They call a silent truce and release the human, allowing him some breathing room.

“Mukori, don’t go anywhere,” warns Ryuogriar.

“Yes, you have to support us, Mukori…” adds the blue Empress.

“I… I don’t care what you do, but if you go somewhere else, I’ll never forgive you…” Geirahoel crosses her arms and looks away bashfully.

The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

Daniel looks at Jeavana, teasing, “Well, Jeavana? Anything clingy or obsessive to say from you?”

“I…!?” blurts out Jeavana with mild surprise. Before she can clarify her own thoughts, the Empresses snap in sync with each other.

  “““I’m not clingy or obsessive!”””

All three blush when they look at each other, and Hekate palms her face. “How do I always lose the Hekate game with tomnaniganizers like these?”

Wenlianna giggles, and she gently tickles Fal’s belly while the tiny feldrok drinks the bottle. “Shall I add that to the Fievegal dictionary, Hekate?”

“Of course!” retorts the raven-haired teen.

“AH!” screams Jeavana as a chunk of her egg lifts up like a cap, and she grabs Daniel’s arm again as she points. Her eyes immediately water again as she rushes back to her spot, dragging Daniel with her as the Empresses protest. They aren’t actually any real distance away, since the eggs are gathered together. But, Jeavana’s sudden panic at the next apparent ‘phase’ of the hatching made her blank out and grab the nearest support she could; that being the only person she respects as stronger than she is, as ironic as that is in actuality.

Daniel grunts in surprise, but simply chuckles when he’s yanked down to the floor on his hands and knees alongside the dragon as she inspects the gap in her eggshell. “Wh-What if… What if…!?”

“You four are making it really difficult not to tease you,” warns Daniel, since he knows why it would be tasteless to do so. It’s not just the innocent panic of first time mothers at play, since three of the four know first hand what horrors there are to be experienced.

Jeavana, realizing she pulled Daniel with her, releases him quickly as the other three simply begrudgingly take their own positions again, crouching or sitting to watch for the exact moment they can see their children.

The gap is too small to really see Jeavana’s hatchling, but she whines softly, “I… But, look… M-Mine’s the furthest, but it should be the furthest behind… What if something goes wrong?”

“He or she’s hatching just fine,” coos Daniel gently. “That means the baby’s strong enough to hatch. That’s a good sign. And, the four of you have been synchronizing the whole time. Is it so surprising?”

She looks aside, grumbling, “Eggs aren’t supposed to work like that… not for such a big time gap… A-And… th-the cur-...”

The mechanic presses a finger to her lips, surprising her into silence. He exhales deeply, but he just wants them to calm down. The unorthodox emperor does his best to reassure her with a soft shoulder pat. “Please just be patient. You’re in the one place in the world that can definitely do something about it if something goes wrong. Look there…”

Daniel points, and Jeavana gasps, cupping her free hand to her mouth as the other one refuses to let go of Daniel’s forearm. She squeezes a bit painfully, and he does his best to endure.

What he’s pointing at is Jeavana’s hatchling, though a tiny maroon-colored foreclaw is fidgeting outside of Ryuogriar’s egg as she hesitantly tries to reach for it to touch it, only to hold herself back.

For hers, Jeavana’s is a brilliant green color with wavy golden splotches and rings on its muzzle, chin, and neck in the small glimpse that is visible. The hatchling is panting from exertion, but it’s most of the way out of the egg already.

  “Baby…” whispers Jeavana.

“You can do it…” whispers Geirahoel to hers, which is cracked most of the way around as well.

Daniel pets Jeavana’s hand, and he says, “I want to check on the others, please…”

She blushes and releases him, nodding briefly. Her gaze is torn between the human Emperor and Lord of dragons as well as her hatchling winning the ‘race’ so far to hatch first, in spite of being the ‘youngest’ egg. Her tail is twitching, and she’s nervous.

The mechanic can’t help but laugh, and Hekate understands why. She’s enjoying the show, because the regal and powerful dragons are adorably skittish and foolish over something exciting, but rather… simple. There’s no real pain involved, since the eggs are already laid. So, it’s just a waiting game as the hatchlings squeak, warble, groan, and make other cute noises. Reignleif makes a similar warbling noise from within her throat for her hatchling, which matches her sound, but with a much higher pitch. It’s similar to the purring that the gatonines and dattakoriens sometimes do, which Hekate is a bit envious of. It’s a soothing sound, and Daniel noticeably relaxes when Gwenesphia or Treia are leaning against him and purring.

Hekate does her best to try to rumble her voice as she exhales, mindful to do it quietly. She holds Fal up as she does it, but she fails at going unnoticed. Wenlianna cocks her head as she looks at her.

Hekate clears her throat. “He seems to like it.”

  “I didn’t say anything…”

“R-Right. Y-You just looked curious though.”

  “Mm-hmm… Only curious…”

  “I wasn’t trying to purr.”

  “I…”

  “I wasn’t…”

The brunette magic artisan’s expression goes from curious to amused to certain, which makes Hekate quietly panic as she glances at the dragons. Thankfully, they’re too busy acting silly.

There’s a knock on the door, and Shek and Skloe enter, each walking while holding their own daughter’s hand.

“Eggy hatch!?” exclaims Jieka. She dashes forward, and the dragons perk up when they hear it.

“Yes!” exclaims Ryuogriar. “Come see, little princesses!”

Jieka excitedly rushes to join them, though her beeline towards Daniel is intercepted by Ryuogriar, who scoops her up and hugs her, needing to hug something. The half-goblin princess is shocked by this for a moment, but Ryuogriar points out her baby’s hand as it chips away at the eggshell slowly. “See that? That’s your baby brother’s hand…”

  “Brudder?” asks Jieka.

“Yes. I hope you’ll treat him as your brother. He’ll need your help to grow up cute and brave, just like you.”

  “Okay!” replies the Crown Princess.

Tekten is slower about her own approach, having seen how Jieka was swiftly intercepted before she could reach Daniel.

That said, the second princess approaches between Geirahoel and Jeavana, and she notices the eyeball that peeks at her from under a shell, which startles her a little bit. Jeavana’s baby has most of its face exposed, and it can look around now. When it sees Tekten, it squeaks cutely.

Tekten looks at Geirahoel while pointing, who she was mostly moving towards. “Baby!”

“That’s right,” coos Jeavana. “Baby… My baby.” She is crying, and Tekten notices.

  “Auntie sad?”

“No, my sweet little gremlin.” She sniffles as she pets Tekten’s head. “I’m happy… My baby is so beautiful…”

Daniel was captured by Reignleif and converted into a ‘chair’ on the floor by her sitting in his lap the moment he took a seat to observe, and now he’s simply holding her as she slides her tail on the floor, leaning against him and waiting more ‘patiently’ for her hatchling, which is making progress, but the furthest behind so far.

A strange noise reaches Hekate’s powerful ears, though. She perks them up as she hisses, “Shh!”

Everyone looks at her, startled, and the only apparent noise other than the struggling hatchlings is Fal mumbling as he suckles on the bottle she’s feeding him slowly and carefully.

Apparent to everyone else, that is.

It’s a low hiss that Hekate doesn’t quite recognize. If she had to describe it, it sounds like a tiny being exhaling its entire lung capacity…

“One of them is suffoca-!” starts Hekate urgently as she rushes forward.

But, before she can even finish her sentence, there’s a flare of fire that explodes in front of Geirahoel, and everyone screams or yells in shock and surprise. Hekate instinctively whirls to protect Fal with her own body, driven by instincts she didn’t know she has. Just as quickly, her heart starts racing. The blast was relatively weak, but Jieka and Tekten screaming as they cry blends with the chaos.

The feldrok teen whirls to face everyone, trying to see what’s going on. Wenlianna is clutching her shirt’s chest, and she drops to her knees as she goes weak. Hekate didn’t feel anything hit her, and smoke is rising from Geirahoel’s egg.

The orange dragon herself dove into a pile with Jeavana, who both desperately used their bodies to shield Tekten, though Jeavana had enough presence of mind to snatch her egg as well.

Daniel pinned Reignleif to the ground to shield her, and both of them have mild scratches on their faces and arms, especially Daniel, whose skin is paper compared to the titans around him.

Ryuogriar is on her feet with Jieka, staring at the egg that just exploded.

Sitting amidst the flames still burning the inside of the egg is a vibrantly-colored orange and grey dragon hatchling with a pattern more akin to tiger stripes than the splotchy and ring-like patterns Jeavana’s has.

Realizing her baby is free from its egg and sitting in the embers of an ignityal flame, Geirahoel lunges close and snatches her baby, lifting the dragonling and inspecting every inch of the little reptilian’s body.

For its part, the baby dragon simply squeaks and yawns, reaching towards Geirahoel… happily.

The baby is ecstatic and, by all appearances, completely unharmed.

Daniel quickly sits up, ordering, “Check the others!”

The two goblin princesses are still crying, and Wenlianna jogs in to help as much as possible. She takes Tekten, cooing and hugging her as she works her way around to Daniel. Tekten has some minor scratches, but thankfully, she doesn’t seem to be seriously harmed.

Hekate, carrying Fal, who is crying as well, asks loudly, “What happened!?”

Reignleif listens to her egg carefully while Daniel checks on Ryuogriar’s hatchling through the hole. He doesn’t hesitate to touch its tiny hand, which grips his finger rather firmly.

The hatchlings seem to be unharmed, and though they’re a little agitated, none of them seem to be especially bothered.

  “Mukori!?” cries out Geirahoel.

Reignleif, who is the most composed after confirming her own egg is alright, replies to everyone. “Father mentioned it happening once… Hatchlings aren’t supposed to have ignityal, but… it’s not always true.”

Daniel grumbles in English as it seems the worst was experienced by him and Tekten, who he takes from Wenlianna. “Jesus Christ…” He then continues softly as he checks over the goblin princess, “I knew they were dragons, but…” He takes a big breath and exhales, and Hekate realizes that he was just as scared as everyone else. It’s a little reassuring. She remembers the battle with Lugrae the Feral Feldrok, and though he was able to face it right away, unlike Hekate, he was also terrified the whole time.

“S-So… everyone’s alright?” asks Hekate nervously, looking at everyone.

While the goblin princesses are still bawling, and their mothers have jogged in close as well to help, Daniel has Tekten calmed down a little, and Ryuogriar hands Jieka to Skloe, her mother. The goblin queen coos, “Shh, you’re safe, Jieka. Dragon babies are surprising, aren’t they? There, there…”

Shek offers, “Daniel, I can take Tekten. We’ll find a healer and cheer her up.”

Daniel nods, asking, “Tekten, do you want to go with Mama?”

The goblin princess nods, but she clings tightly to Daniel’s neck. He can’t see her head well, so he’s not sure himself that she nodded, but he adds as he crouches, “Okay. Go with Mommy. Daddy has to stay and look after the dragon babies.”

Tekten whimpers through her sobs and sniffles, seemingly hugging him with all her strength. Hekate scoffs slightly, and she does her best to hold Fal so that he can ‘hug’ her in the same way, in spite of his premature little arms and legs. The feldrok teen can feel the tiny feldrok cub’s mana starting to ooze out. It puts her on edge, but she has a responsibility as a protector, an Empress, and a friend to the other women present.

Not to mention as his adoptive-mother alongside his adoptive father…

And, there’s a bunch of other adoptive mothers, too, helping her.

The raven-haired Empress curls her tail around and up to cover him a little more, and he seems to noticeably relax as his cries become small. “Shh, that’s it Fal.”

There’s a rather disgusting sound that Hekate has heard many times before from six tiny individuals already. It makes her slump a little as she feels the small, warm wetness sink into her shoulder.

She takes a breath and exhales in exasperation. Children are a chaotic and messy business, aren’t they?

The feldrok teen smiles as she looks at her family. Tekten refuses to let go of Daniel, so Shek pets her back and stays with them, while Skloe carries Jieka out.

Jeavana asks, “Wh-What do I do? I… I moved my egg without thinking, and… And she went back inside…”

Daniel asks with weariness from the shock of the last few moments as he tries to regain his own calmness and composure. “You ladies can smell ignityal, right? I can tell it has a sweet smell, normally, but I don’t normally smell it unless there’s a lot.”

Ryuogriar replies, “Y-Yes. Please excuse me…” She creeps close to her own egg, smelling the opening where the foreclaw has most of the shell’s side peeled away. Her baby could plop out of the egg any moment now.

Likewise, Reignleif carefully smells her egg as well, especially around the cracks and chips.

Jeavana nervously reaches for the ‘cap’, which is seated again, but she hesitates. She rushes over to Daniel, saying, “Harbinger! You do it!”

“What?” asks Daniel. Hekate can tell he’s a little short now with the stress and being bombarded with everything, but he takes a breath and visibly forces himself to relax. “Sorry… I just… What do you want me to do?”

Jeavana crouches to his level, and Tekten looks at her and the egg nervously, the areas around her eyes having darkened from crying. “O-Open it so I can check for ignityal.”

  “Me?”

She nods, her face grimly serious.

Daniel closes his eyes briefly, bracing himself against everything he could be thinking, which is likely some form of exasperation.

Hekate admires that he’s able to resist anger so well, since she, herself, can be a bit frustrating at times. And, though Hekate knows the truth, Jeavana is not one of Daniel’s lovers. She’s far older than him, and in theory, more mature in many ways. Regardless, because of the tragedies of the past, the rough-edged golden dragon is terrified and completely vulnerable in ways that no one would ever guess.

I wonder if they forgot that the entire Citadel can see all of this… Can’t they? Hekate looks at the wall of the Citadel. Xyreko uses magic to ‘see’ and ‘copy’ what’s going on, so there’s no obvious eye or camera watching them. Likewise, illusion magic is used in place of television screens to allow those outside to see.

The show that has been taking place would undoubtedly make others see the Fievegal as a collection of incompetent fools, given how they’re behaving over something ‘so simple’ as eggs hatching. Unlike a woman’s birth among the many true human-kin races, the egg-laying races could actually literally leave it to someone else to wait around on the hatching.

Instead, they are showing every vulnerable and weak side of themselves that they have.

Daniel, for his part, braces Tekten against his side with his right arm, and he uses his left hand to reach for the cap of the egg shell. He keeps himself between Tekten and the egg, which allows her to see, but will also give him a chance to shield her if something else happens. Shek is also supporting her by rubbing her back gently, watching in astonishment as well.

Daniel lifts the cap, and the baby dragon is peeking up at them with big eyes.

Jeavana smiles as tears find her eyes again, and she makes an obvious sniffing motion to check.

  “N-No… wait… what?”

She looks in her egg more deliberately, and Geirahoel asks, “What is it!? Do we need a doctor? Is…?”

“D-D-Daniel?” squeaks Jeavana as she tilts the egg towards him. He lifts the cap out of the way, since it’s not actually attached and won’t ‘resist’ the hatchlings in the way that’s intended by letting them struggle their way through their own hatching.

Daniel begins laughing, and he plops back to a seated position on his butt, hugging Tekten, who sniffles, but says nothing.

Something surprising is inside Jeavana’s egg, but no one can understand why Daniel would laugh about it.

Not until they see it themselves.
