Side Story: Submerged Secrets

  Side Story: Submerged Secrets

The air inside the Aether-Vanguard’s transport was thick with anticipation. The team had just learned that the first Sub-Core was located deep within the flooded ruins of Mandaue’s subway system. A location they hadn’t anticipated, but one that had become crucial to their mission. The Sub-Core wasn’t just an energy source—it was the key to stabilizing the energy grid and gaining control over the System’s volatile fluctuations.

Adrian sat in the transport's cockpit, his fingers tapping against the console in thought. The weight of the mission pressed down on him—this Sub-Core wasn’t just another objective; it was the gateway to something far greater. His team had already proven their strength, but this was different. There was something about the location that unsettled him, an instinctual pull he couldn’t ignore.

“We’re almost there,” Sarah said from behind him, pulling up her data display. “The readings from the Sub-Core’s location are... massive. Whatever it is, it’s definitely tied to the System’s core power.”

Adrian turned to her. “You’re saying it’s a direct connection to the System?”

Sarah gave him a small nod. “Exactly. It’s drawing power from deeper layers of the System, probably connected to its core functions. If we can secure it, we’ll have a significant edge.”

Mike, who had been silent up until now, leaned forward, his eyes scanning the flooded cityscape outside. “You mean this place could be the next big step in beating the System? ‘Cause if we get that Core, we’re a hell of a lot closer to turning the tides.”

Adrian nodded, trying to focus on the mission ahead. “That’s exactly what it means. But it’s not just about taking control. We need to understand the Sub-Core’s purpose. The System’s recalibration is still underway, and the last thing we need is another destabilized Node.”

Eva, sitting quietly beside him, spoke up. “The deeper we go, the more unstable the environment will get. If we’re not careful, we could be walking straight into a trap.”

Adrian looked at her, her concern not lost on him. Eva had always been the cautious one, but her instincts were sharp. He could tell that something about this mission was unnerving her, and he didn’t want to ignore that gut feeling.

“We’ll be ready,” Adrian reassured her, his voice steady. “Stay focused. We know what’s at stake.”

The transport slowly descended toward the ruined subway entrance, the water level just high enough to submerge the tunnel’s edges. The once-bustling city of Mandaue now looked like a forgotten ghost town, its streets drowned beneath rising tides. But beneath the surface, hidden away in the depths, was the Sub-Core—an object of immense power that could tip the balance in their fight against the System.

As they disembarked, the team moved cautiously toward the entrance to the submerged subway. The water was murky, obscured by the residue of decay and corruption. Each step Adrian took felt like a step deeper into the unknown.

“This place gives me the creeps,” Mike muttered, his voice muffled by his environmental suit.

Sarah, adjusting her visor, nodded in agreement. “The energy signatures are off the charts. We’re close.”

The team waded through the water, their suits providing some protection from the rising heat. But it was more than just the temperature that was unsettling—it was the growing sense of something alive in the deep.

Adrian raised a hand, signaling for the team to stop. “We’re close. Be on alert. I don’t trust the System to leave this place unguarded.”

They pushed forward, the sound of their footsteps in the water the only noise in the oppressive silence. The deeper they went, the darker it became. It felt like the very air was thick with the weight of the corrupted energy that had festered in these tunnels.

Suddenly, the sound of something skittering echoed through the darkened water. Adrian’s heart skipped a beat. The air grew colder, and the pressure seemed to mount. Something was down here with them.

“Stay sharp,” Adrian ordered, his hand going instinctively to his weapon. “This could be it.”

From the shadows, something massive shifted. A shape darted from the depths of the water, moving too fast to see clearly. Adrian’s eyes narrowed, focusing on the movement ahead.

“Something’s coming,” Mike said, his voice tense. “Big.”

And then, like a flash of lightning, a massive shape shot through the water. It was a creature, long and sleek like an eel, but with the terrifying features of an Aswang. Its glowing yellow eyes locked onto them, and its mouth opened wide, revealing rows of jagged teeth that gleamed in the dim light.

“Shit!” Mike shouted, drawing his weapon as the creature surged forward. Its body was sleek, its movements unnervingly fast, and it was coming straight for them.

Adrian didn’t hesitate. He raised his hand and manipulated the gravity around the creature, sending it crashing into the tunnel’s wall with a force that shook the entire chamber.

But the creature wasn’t done yet. It shrieked in pain, thrashing against the gravitational pull that Adrian had placed on it. With a snap of its tail, it sent a shockwave through the water, causing waves to crash around them.

  “Get back!” Adrian yelled.

Eva was already moving, stepping into the fray as she gathered her Pure Radiation energy. The eel-like creature recoiled as Eva released a burst of blinding light, hitting it directly in the chest. The radiation burned through its mutated form, but it didn’t collapse. Instead, it hissed louder, enraged.

“This thing won’t go down easy!” Mike grunted, his weapon raised as he charged again. “I’ll hold it!”

Eva focused her energy again, this time creating a concentrated beam of light that seared through the creature’s thick hide. The eel screeched in agony, but it was still alive. It wasn’t until Adrian stepped forward, his hand glowing with power from the Genesis Ring, that the creature finally slowed. With a final push of gravity, the tunnel above them collapsed, sending debris crashing down on top of the mutated Aswang.

  It didn’t move again.

Adrian lowered his hand, panting slightly. “That’s one down.”

“Not for long,” Mike said, his eyes scanning the water for more. “We’ve got to keep moving. The Core’s waiting.”

Adrian nodded, the weight of the mission still heavy on his mind. The creature they had just fought wasn’t just a random mutation—it was a guardian, a creature placed here by the System to protect its power. They were getting closer to the heart of the System’s defenses, and the further they went, the stronger the threats would become.

But they had come too far to turn back now. The Sub-Core was within reach, and Adrian knew that this was their chance to turn the tide in their favor.

“We keep moving,” Adrian said, his voice firm. “We’re almost there. Let’s secure the Core.”

The team pressed forward, ready for whatever new dangers lay ahead. They had come to face the System—and they wouldn’t stop until they had what they came for.
