Side Story: The Tech Graveyard

  Side Story: The Tech Graveyard

The basement was a mess of discarded hardware, broken pieces of tech scattered across the floor, and cables snaking their way between piles of outdated servers and malfunctioning monitors. The faint glow of a few old, flickering screens was the only light in the otherwise dim room. It smelled faintly of metal and dust, the air thick with the weight of the discarded remnants of the old world. Yet, amid the clutter, there was a certain sense of purpose.

Sarah Jenkins sat hunched over an old console in the corner, her focus absolute. Her fingers danced across the keys with practiced precision as she tapped away, pulling up the data streams, navigating through firewalls and digital mazes that would have deterred any other scavenger. But not Sarah. She was a “System Splicer,” and there was nothing in this broken world of technology that she couldn’t access.

Adrian and Mike stood just inside the doorway, watching her work. Mike shifted uneasily, still not fully comfortable with Sarah’s methods, but Adrian was patient, letting her do what she needed to. He had seen Sarah’s abilities firsthand, and despite the oddity of her unconventional approach, he understood that her skills were an asset they could not afford to overlook.

“So, this is where you’ve been hiding,” Mike said, his voice tinged with a mix of skepticism and awe. “I didn’t know you were such a... techie.”

Sarah didn’t look up from her console, but the faintest smile tugged at the corner of her lips. “Not hiding. Just working. If you want to survive in this world, you need to understand how it works. The System isn’t just about fighting monsters or harvesting energy—it’s about knowing the rules, knowing how to manipulate it. And I’ve spent my time learning how to do just that.”

Mike glanced around at the mass of discarded electronics that filled the room. “And this is all from the old world? What’s it got to do with the System?”

Sarah finally looked up, her eyes sharp and focused. “The System is built on data. Everything we interact with is connected to it. And what most people don’t realize is that the System has a lot of hidden layers—layers that even the Admin doesn’t fully control. This”—she waved her hand around at the room full of old tech—“this is the stuff that can unlock those layers. It’s the pieces of the puzzle the Admin doesn’t want us to see.”

Adrian leaned against the doorframe, his eyes scanning the makeshift workstation Sarah had set up. It was nothing fancy, but it was functional. There were stacks of data drives, glowing screens, and various salvaged tools that Sarah had put together to enhance her work. For all the chaos of the world, Sarah had found a way to bring some semblance of order.

"You're using all this to hack into the System?" Adrian asked, genuinely curious.

Sarah nodded, her hands never stopping. “I don’t hack it in the traditional sense. I splice. I bypass the primary interfaces and tap into the System’s secondary layers—the ones most people don’t even know exist. When you can do that, you can intercept data, manipulate broadcasts, even predict the System’s shifts.”

Adrian crossed his arms. “And that’s how you got the modified Status Ring. You spliced it.”

Sarah paused, a small smirk forming on her lips. “Exactly. It lets me bypass the System’s default restrictions and read the energy fluctuations in real-time. I can see what’s happening in the Nodes, track power surges, and even predict when a recalibration is about to hit.”

Mike looked impressed, though he tried to mask it with a skeptical grunt. “So, you’re telling me you can track the System like it’s your personal toy?”

Sarah gave him a pointed look. “Not exactly. But I can use it to get ahead of the curve. It’s not about controlling it—it’s about understanding it. The System’s not random, Mike. It’s a pattern. And when you can read that pattern, you can predict what’s coming next.”

Adrian took a step closer to Sarah, watching her work. “And what do you see right now? What’s coming next?”

Sarah didn’t immediately respond. Instead, she focused on the data streaming across her screen, her fingers flying over the keys as she manipulated the interface. She seemed to be deep in thought, analyzing patterns and shifting energy signatures.

After a few moments, she looked up, her eyes sharp. “Something’s wrong. There’s a major fluctuation happening in the energy grid. It’s unstable. Someone’s been tampering with the Cores—hoarding them, like I suspected. But it’s worse than I thought.”

Adrian’s heart skipped a beat. “Worse how?”

Sarah leaned back in her chair, her face tense. “Whoever’s behind this is using the Boss Cores to fuel a massive power surge. The energy levels are reaching critical mass. If they don’t vent the excess energy soon, it’ll destabilize the entire Node system. The recalibration won’t just cause chaos—it could tear apart the entire region.”

Mike stepped forward, alarmed. “How long do we have?”

Sarah’s face was grim as she checked the readouts. “A few hours, maybe less. But that’s not the worst part.”

Adrian frowned. “What do you mean?”

Sarah’s voice dropped to a near whisper. “The System is adapting faster than we anticipated. It’s learning. The next recalibration could trigger a cascade effect, making the Nodes even more unstable. If we don’t stop it now, it won’t just be the Iron Tusk we’re fighting—it’ll be the System itself.”

Adrian’s mind raced as the weight of Sarah’s words settled in. The situation had just gone from bad to worse. The Iron Tusk’s hoarding of Boss Cores was a major threat, but if the System’s recalibration went unchecked, the consequences could be catastrophic for the entire region.

He turned to Sarah. “We need to stop them. Now.”

Sarah’s eyes met his, the determination in them clear. “I’ll give you everything I can. I can’t stop the recalibration entirely, but I can help you track down the Iron Tusk’s base. You’ll need to move fast. The longer we wait, the worse this gets.”

Adrian turned to Mike, his expression firm. “Get ready. We’re going after the Iron Tusk.”

Mike didn’t hesitate. “I’m with you. Let’s finish this.”

With Sarah’s guidance, Adrian now had the information he needed to take on the Iron Tusk once and for all. But the clock was ticking, and every second they wasted was another second the System had to recalibrate. They were facing the ultimate test, not just of their strength but of their ability to outsmart the forces that controlled their world.

Adrian turned back to Sarah, his resolve solidifying. “Thanks for the help, Sarah. We’re counting on you.”

She nodded, her fingers already moving to prepare the data. “Don’t let the System win, Adrian. Make sure you stop them.”

With that, Adrian and Mike headed out, prepared to face whatever the Iron Tusk had in store. The battle was far from over, but with Sarah’s information, they had a fighting chance.
