Side Story: The Hospital Siege

  Side Story: The Hospital Siege

The Mandaue District Hospital had once been a sanctuary, a place of healing and hope. But now, it was nothing more than a tomb—a silent witness to the horrors of the System’s cruel mutations. Adrian led the team through the cracked front doors, his mind racing with the uncertainty of what awaited them inside. The echoes of the world’s collapse resonated within the sterile walls, and the hospital, now overrun by the corrupted, was an uneasy reminder of how far humanity had fallen.

“This place... doesn’t feel right,” Mike muttered, his voice low as they stepped into the lobby. His hand rested on the hilt of his weapon, ready for anything. The air was thick with a faint, chemical odor, mixed with the lingering remnants of decay. The sense of dread that had been building up since they set foot in the hospital only seemed to grow stronger the deeper they ventured.

Adrian gave a sharp nod. “We’ve got to find Eva before it’s too late. The infection is spreading rapidly, and we don’t know how much longer the survivors inside can hold on.”

As they moved down the hall, Sarah’s device buzzed in her hand, indicating an anomaly. “There’s a heavy energy signature coming from the operating rooms,” she said, her eyes narrowing at the readout. “It’s... unstable. Something’s feeding off the energy here.”

Adrian’s pulse quickened. “That’s where we need to go. We find Eva and we neutralize the source. If this mutation is like the Spore-Spitters, it could be spreading through the energy grid.”

The hospital was a sprawling structure, its once-pristine hallways now littered with debris. As they moved deeper, the sense of desolation grew palpable. The sterile white walls were now stained with dark streaks—signs of the Aswang infection that had taken root within. Adrian felt a cold knot in his stomach, his steps more deliberate, as though the place itself was closing in around them.

They reached the operating rooms, where the signs of struggle were evident. The doors to the first room were ajar, a trail of broken glass and overturned medical equipment scattered across the floor.

“Eva?” Adrian called, his voice echoing through the empty corridor.

There was a faint sound of movement from inside the room, followed by a soft gasp. Adrian stepped forward cautiously, pushing the door open slowly.

Inside, Eva was hunched over a patient, her hands glowing with radiant light as she tried to stabilize them. Her face was pale with exhaustion, but her focus was unwavering. Her energy radiated from her in waves, as though she were pouring everything she had into the patient’s survival.

“Eva,” Adrian said again, his voice softer this time. “We’re here. We’re going to get you out.”

Eva looked up, her face weary but relieved. “Adrian... Mike... Sarah... I— I’m doing everything I can, but these people are beyond help. The infection... it’s too far gone. I can’t save them all.”

Adrian’s heart sank as he saw the desperation in her eyes. The glow from her hands flickered as she struggled to maintain control over the energy coursing through her. The strain was evident, and he knew she couldn’t keep this up much longer.

“You don’t have to do this alone,” Adrian said, stepping forward. “We’re here to help. What’s happening? What’s going on in this hospital?”

Eva’s gaze flickered to the patient she was working on, whose body was visibly deteriorating, the spores in the air clinging to their skin. “It’s... spreading faster than I thought. The infection is linked to the hospital’s energy grid. Every time I try to heal someone, the energy in the room feeds into the spores, making the mutations more aggressive. These patients... they’re turning, and I can’t stop it.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed, piecing the puzzle together. “So, the energy is feeding the infection. That’s why the hospital’s systems are destabilizing.”

Eva nodded, her hands trembling as she pulled back from the patient. “The energy grid is infected. It’s corrupting everything it touches. If we don’t stop it, it’ll spread through the entire district. This whole hospital is on the brink of collapse.”

Sarah moved forward, examining the medical equipment around them. “There’s no time. If the hospital’s power grid goes any further, it’ll trigger a massive energy spike. It’ll destabilize the Node and cause a city-wide blackout. We need to shut it down.”

Adrian turned to her, his expression hardening. “How do we stop it?”

Sarah’s fingers flew over her device as she analyzed the hospital’s energy grid. “The main control room is in the basement. If we can get to the central power system, we can sever the energy flow and stop the infection from spreading.”

Mike’s voice was laced with urgency. “Then we need to move. I don’t care what it takes. Let’s get to that power grid.”

Adrian nodded. “Eva, stay here. If the infection continues to spread, I need you to help with the survivors. We’ll handle the power grid.”

Eva looked at him, her eyes filled with resolve despite her exhaustion. “I’ll do my best. But be careful. There are more infected down in the basement, and they’re stronger than before.”

Adrian turned to Mike and Sarah. “We move quickly. We get to the grid, shut it down, and stop the spread of the mutation.”

They turned toward the exit of the operating room, ready to head deeper into the hospital. But just as they stepped out into the hallway, a screech echoed from the darkened corridor ahead.

Adrian froze, his instincts kicking in. “Ready yourselves.”

A massive figure emerged from the shadows—an Aswang, mutated far beyond what they had seen before. Its body was bloated, covered in thick, spore-like growths. It hissed as it advanced, its hands twitching with grotesque energy, and its eyes glowed with the corruption that had taken over it.

Without hesitation, Mike lunged forward, his weapon raised. “Get back!” he shouted, swinging his hammer-like weapon into the creature’s chest.

The impact sent the Aswang stumbling back, but it wasn’t enough to bring it down. The creature screeched, its body twitching and releasing more spores into the air. Adrian quickly manipulated the gravity around the creature, sending it crashing to the floor.

But as he did, another Aswang—this one more humanoid and sleek—emerged from the darkness, flanking them.

“Two of them?” Sarah exclaimed, her eyes wide in alarm. “These things are multiplying too quickly.”

Adrian clenched his jaw. “We need to keep moving. We can’t waste time here.”

With synchronized precision, they fought off the two mutated Aswangs, but they weren’t just fighting for survival. They were racing against time, knowing that the longer they stayed in the hospital, the more dangerous the situation became.

After taking down the creatures, they continued their journey to the basement. The hallways were eerily silent now, but Adrian couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being watched. Every turn, every corner seemed to hold another danger.

When they reached the basement, the power hub was revealed to them: a large room filled with humming machinery and an array of electrical conduits. The control panel stood at the center, glowing ominously.

But standing in front of it was a wall of mutated Aswangs, their bodies swelling with corruption, blocking their path.

Adrian’s grip tightened. “We’ll take them down, then we cut the power.”

The final battle was about to begin.
