A Chapter 9 Preparations(4)
14th Blue, 2043. 12:53AM
The doors slid open with a chime, with the first thing entering my eyes being Maxwell in his white lab coat. He was patting it down, yet failed to remove the wrinkles that gave me the feeling that it had been chewed on by a goat. The urge to smile rose unbidden, yet I suppressed it. One of his feet was tapping the floor, a sign of both impatience and excitement in his part.
"What took you so long?! We have much to discuss!" he practically threw himself at me the moment I stepped off the elevator, but I pushed him away before he could touch my body, covering my nose with the back of the palm.
"How long has it been since you last left the lab?"
"Was it yesterday? I can't remember. You know how it is."
"Uhuh! So you have been going around spreading your revolting stench at the others all this time?! Go and take a shower!" I commanded.
"Come on, Boss! Right now I have so many things flashing around within here! I don't want them to cool down any further." he gestured with a finger at his head.
"Maxwell! Take the shower! I will wait for you here!" I ordered while directing him with an intense glare.
"What did I do to deserve this?!" he grumbled before stalking off.
"And do a thorough job of it. I also want to take a look at the bio Lab!" I shouted after him before dragging my weary body over to a long bench and popping down onto it. Sleep was threatening me. I could feel it compelling my eyelids with power, so, I lay down upon the desk, tucked in my knees, and let myself drift off, with the hope that Maxwell would take atleast 15 minutes before returning.
-----
A curse almost left my lips as I felt myself being shaken awake, only for the slam of memories to stop me in my tracks. I opened my eyes, slightly, doing my best not to groan in dissatisfaction, before lowering my feet and seating upright. I rubbed my eyes, before working my nostrils, which managed to pick up on the faint scent of soap.
"Boss, you should have gone back home and slept if you were this tired." Maxwell's soft voice entered my ears.
"Many things need to be done. Besides, this is just an inspection. I don't plan to spend a long time here." I said before standing up and stretching.
"Let's head for the lab first. I want to get a glimpse of our latest failures and advancements."
"Well... There is nothing of note in that area." said Maxwell as he stepped in beside me.
It took the better part of my willpower to prevent my face from morphing into one of disappointment. So, I tucked my hands into my pockets until we reached the entrance to the lab. I changed into something that covered every inch of my body. Even the air I started breathing in, came from a tank strapped to my back. Only after then, did we both enter the lab.

Massive transparent cylinders filled the lab, tall enough to be connected with the ceiling, within which were many people, plus a few beasts. The greatest way to prove research was to test your advancements on people. So, I had found myself a way to bypass the ethics and morals of experimenting on people by choosing the deadliest of criminals. Most of the people suspended within the tanks had either sacrificed a fellow human to the beasts, betrayed humanity to the beasts, or simply vile characters that had had much blood on their hands.
I veered off towards the first one, noting the fur upon a burly man's left arm with a frown and a pang of disappointment.
"He has the least degree of gene mutation. And that's only because we gave him less than 1% of the bloodline chains." explained Maxwell.
"It looks like that direction won't get us anywhere. Bloodline chains are ultimately innate to the beasts. Adapting them for humans... Seems to be a futile endeavor." I tensed my jaw while gazing at the naked man within, whose hair had also grown out all the way to his feet.
"Though, the beasts seem to be taking to them well enough." said Maxwell with a cheer in his voice.
"And have you discovered a direction we might take to get anything out of the chains?" I asked curiously after turning to him.
"Yes! Come with me!" he eagerly went ahead with a bounce in his step while I followed behind.
He led me to a cylinder all the way to the end of the room, one which appeared to have a massive black bull floating within. I recalled from memory that this had been a small variant of bull, yet now, it had become massive, an interesting development.
"What do you see?" Maxwell asked. Though I couldn't easily get a read on his expression within the protective suits, I was certain his lips were curled up into a smug grin.
"Since you led me all the way here, it seems that the chances of this being the small bull from before, are high." I said.
"Yes! It was that small bull! Now, with just a tiny 1% it gained all this muscle mass! This alone will solve the need for food!" he said.
"Surely you must have discovered something else, right? After all, we can't exactly rear beasts that have been touched by spiritual energy. That would be risking it."
"You're right about that. Follow me!" he said before bounding over towards the cylinder opposite the one with the massive bull.
Suspended within this cylinder my eyes caught the lone piece of muscle fibers and blood vessels, large enough to atleast occupy a a quarter of the same space, if it was placed beside the massive bull. The voice was female, a tad excited, but more subdued.
"We got a few hundred cells and added just a bit of the bloodline chains, not even a percentage, yet the cells started dividing at a phenomenal speed, leading to this!" another person who had been standing before the cylinder monitoring everything with it, explained at the behest of Maxwell.
"Good work! This might mitigate the risks of farming." I praised with a smile. Rearing normal beasts was doable, but what made it hard was the simple fact that they could evolve any minute. And when they did, aggressiveness became a trait they acquired. Even the most docile of the lot would still develop that trait with enough time. After all, upon investigation, it had been discovered that even herbivores turned omnivorous upon evolving.
"Now, how long does such a large slab of meat take to grow? How much resources does it consume? And most of all, how long until we start massive scale production?"
Even as my questions were being fired off, Maxwell's grin wasn't wiped off the face, meaning, everything was okay!
After being reassured about everything, with the production capable of being started as early as next week, my lips curved upwards. This was another industry that would bring a change in the world!
"Which other place are you in the mood to take a look around at?" asked Maxwell.
I lowered my gaze in contemplation, with my hand caressing my chin. There were many places that I wanted to explore, but for most of them, it would be futile as there hadn't yet been any new discoveries. But there was a place I really wanted to see, one I was particularly invested within.
"Let's head to the Particle Frequency lab." I said after raising my head.
"By the way, boss, did that falling star really tear a rift in space?" Maxwell asked.
"Yes, but that's still doesn't prove that space-time is fabric in nature." I said upon noticing the beginnings of smugness on his face.
"Come on! How could it not be a fabric? We already proved that by determine how the light from far away stars curved upon entering our system! The sun is basically causing a depression in the surrounding spacetime due to its mass!" after finishing, he became a whale that inhaled air.
"Yes, but the theory that it is just a void with lots of energy still holds. Maybe all the particles of energy in the void of space are affected by the gravity of bodies of great mass, thereby making you and a few others believe it's the spacetime fabric." I argued.
"...we won't get anywhere with this. I can go into length upon what we detected when it touched down in Kisol."
Those words earned my attention. I had momentarily forgotten about it. Only Milena possessed an observatory, but Dugavu still had its own means of sensing things on the planet, especially when we relied on Spirit circuits.
"There was another massive disturbance in the spiritual energy a few hours later. It was as if a storm was raging in the forest it landed..." Maxwell started.
