C5 Time for a Break

Vegis walked out the building more tired than he thought he would be, but also be the happiest he had felt in months. With the promise of a higher wage, he thought of all the things he could do with the money. Maybe he will finally get enough money to take a trip to his home world to visit family and be there for the anniversary. Vegis looked at the pod train schedule and realized that he would have to wait another hour before one would come to this stop.

Vegis had to decide whether the hour wait would be better than the 100 Gribs cost for the cab fare to his apartment. A while passes and Vegis decides he could splurge and take the faster cab. Vegis pulled up the website and hailed in a cab. He told the auto driver program to take him to the stop near his complex. It took 20 minutes for Vegis to arrive and pay. He walked into his room and made some food and ate some dessert.

After eating and taking a shower, he lay down, put on the VR helmet, and connected to the LSN (Local Stars Network). Vegis was standing in a white void and was told to put in his password. After he did that, appeared in a well decorated room. It was his room from his childhood, and when Vegis walked out of the door, he saw the rest of the house and saw his mom talking to his sisters. “Oh, hi Vegis, how was your day?”(Mrs. Watt) “Hi mom. I’m doing good, just got hired today.”(Vegis) “That’s great. Will you have enough time this year to go to the anniversary?”(Mrs. Watt) “I will. Hey Jut, do you need me to help you fill out any more papers?”(Vegis) “No, Jess will help me fill out my college application later.”(Jut) “Okay, I’m heading out to play some games.”(Vegis)

Vegis nodded at this and walked out the front door and was transported to a large city. He took quick strides to the building with “Game” slapped across its front. Walking in, Vegis walked into the backroom to see his catalog of games he owned. Vegis spent some time thinking about what to play, couldn't decide, and just slapped the random game button he asked a friend for. A wheel dropped down and started to spin for 3 minutes before stopping on an old game he hadn’t played in a while. The Way of Magic was an old VRMMO game that was revived by fans making their own servers.

Vegis got in and his form started to change. His teeth sharpened, face elongated, and his body hair thickened. By the time the transformation was done, Vegis completely changed into a beast man. His clothes changed into platemail that was shining with a blue and green light. Vegis did some light stretches to get used to the complete transformation of his being.

Magic for civilian use is under lots of regulations if it wasn’t used in designated areas since it could get dangerous very fast without proper training and supervision. Magic worked off of concepts. One controlled the flow of mana and imposed their will onto it. After doing this, one would add ideas and concepts into it, changing the shape of the mass of mana into what the user imposed upon it. Since doing this in real space was very dangerous, VR games and worlds were made where people can practice magic without causing a small disaster and causing casualties. The Way of Magic was part of the first generation of games that were supposed to teach the basics of magic and train control over mana.

As time passed, the game expanded the basic world that was developed and soon transformed into more of a pvp strategy war game instead of just training sim. Player made countries rose and fell multiple times until the company behind the game went bankrupt due to problems behind the scenes that crippled the company. The founder of the company decided to release the source code of the game and allowed players to run their own servers.

Vegis walked out of the small shed he owned in-game. He opened the minimap to see who owned the area this time. It seemed like nothing had changed just yet. He then checked his permits, the quality of the materials left, and inspected his equipment. Seeing that everything was good, he opened up his Equipment shop.

He slapped his hands together causing blue fire to sputter to existence between his palms. Taking a deep breath, Vegis’s lungs filled with more air than physically possible before blowing towards the flames and making them shoot to the coals. The coals instantly ignited and the rest of his breath caused them to get even hotter. Vegis then turned on automatic bellows and changed his gear from his pvp loadout to his forging outfit. Grabbing his tongs and hammer, he walked into the shack to see if there was something to fix. He walked in and looked into a box. Inside was a broken breastplate. Vegis liked to fix things for his friends. Because he doesn’t log in around the same time as them, he now rarely meets them in game anymore so they leave things they need fixed in a box and Vegis would fix it any time he logs in.

He placed the breastplate into the raging fire and waited for it to get hot. As Vegis waited, he walked to the nearby stream and collected some water. When he got back, he put the water in a large tub and checked on the item in the forge. Vegis saw it was hot enough and brought it to the anvil.

He grabbed his hammer and struck the dents in the breastplate. He hammered on it for 3 minutes before putting it back on the forge. Vegis did it 4 times before he thought he got all the dents and then quenched it. He usually doesn’t do this for armour but the metal in it was too strong for him to do it cold. Inspecting it, he then put it on a mannequin and shot at it twice to check its durability. The musket balls slammed into the armor and deformed on its surface.

Vegis was happy at the result and put it in the empty box.
