C28 Stuck Together

Doel picked themself off the floor with the burns and boils healing. After doing a small stretch, he began to talk. “How are you two doing? I'm sorry about having to do this forcibly, but it was the only way for me to get this done. The elders back home did not approve of this but it was the only way to see if the legends were true.” Vegis gave Doel the stink eye and said, “What the fuck is this all about?” to which Mitra who just stood up nodded and repeated the question. Doel was smiling at this but then passed out. Vegis ran to one of the emergency buttons and slammed it whilst Mitra dragged them out. A med team that was in the building came and took Doel to a secretive clinic that was made for Doel and their colleagues.

Immediately after Doel was taken away, Vegis and Mitra were detained by a security team and put in a cell. It was 5 hours before they were let out by the orders of Doel and taken to him in his private medical room. In the room, there was a bed, window, several special devices, and a nurse just outside the door. Doel was sitting on the bed and looked much better than when he collapsed. “I am good now if you are wondering, your awakenings sucked out most of the mana in the area and I had to use some of my reserves to heal myself.” This caused Vegis to raise a brow and asked, “What awakening, what is all of this? I got no fucking idea what is happening and I want you to explain it since you seem to have an idea about it.”

Doel closed their eyes and put a hand under their chin, clearly debating whether or not to tell them everything. After several minutes of contemplating, Doel’s eyes opened and they started to speak. “You see that book right on that table? Give it to me. It is the main source of where I got my information, though I think the elders have the full text.” Vegis tossed the book over and Doel caught it in mid-air. It floated down to his opened hand and flipped to the same page that Doel checked earlier.

Doel motioned for the two of them to come closer, and as they did, the page started to change. From the ambiguous figures into perfect copies of Vegis and Mitra. The descriptions changed to perfectly recall their history and showed something like stats for the 2 of them. Under Vegis, it had 20% for metamorphosis while Mitra was at 60%. Both of their health was at 80% but Vegis’s stamina was at 40% and Mitra was 70%. It continued with a faith, soul, and tiredness stats. “You guys are something that are straight out of myths. A new living Sun-Kin is supposed to be an impossibility and you who was made from their creation must be the Beast of Dusk and Dawn.”

Doel had a strange look in their eye and continued to talk. “You were just something that existed in between the lines of the Script. There were images of you but no stories and descriptions. You are the key that we were missing to the higher plane. But it seems that you are not complete yet, and since I did this out of line, I don't want tell them about you.” Doel paused for a minute and just as it was going to continue to speak, the door behind them slammed open by a kick and a true Drakkin entered the room. This was a male of the species, and he had an angry look on his face. He walked over to Doel and started to yell at them in the shared language the Drakkin and Magi made.

Vegis and Mitra had to wait almost an hour before the newcomer stopped scolding Doel and introduced himself. “Hello you two, I am Drake Phlest. I am the head manager of the north station.” Mitra tilted her head in confusion and Vegis’s eyes widened at this revelation. “I am sorry about what this idiot has done to you two and I will have to take them back to the home system. AH, yeah, you two should probably stay together. The “pact” that has formed between you two is strange and has a, I think, need for proximity. That's all I can glean from looking at you guys.” As Drake was done talking, Doel continued to talk. “You don’t have to worry about registering the Sun-Kin into the system, I already finished putting all the information about her into it and made her facility ID and civilian ID.”

While being dragged out of the room and to an exit, Doel pointed at the nurse outside the room and told Vegis that is where he put Mitra’s identification and papers. Vegis walked over and got the papers. He looked over it and now, he has a roommate. Until the elders were fully updated and did a council meeting, Mitra was just considered a normal being and not a test subject. Vegis had to walk outside and dragged Mitra to the cafeteria because he was hungry and so was Mitra. Vegis ate quite a bit but Mitra consumed enough to feed 12 people. They put up their dishes and headed back to the dorms.

When they both entered the building, Vegis stopped and saw that a large group of his coworkers were in the lounge. Mac and their group turned around first and waved at Vegis before asking “Hey, who’s that girl?” Vegis responded with “She is a new employee, a mix-up in paperwork has made her room unavailable and I got chosen to host her until a spot opens up for her in the proper building.” The group nodded at this and returned to watch the screen. Vegis took her up to his room and left her there as he went down to check if there were any changes to the clones. He could not spot anything other than a light blue tinge on their left hand’s nails. Seeing that nothing else was wrong, Vegis headed back to his room and saw Mitra looking into the closet.

Mitra was cloaked in a light construct of armor. After she was done peeking at his clothes, the armor started to shift into clothes. This surprised Vegis since stuff like transforming clothes usually involved nanites and high level magic. Both of these were incredibly expensive and extraordinarily hard to control. Vegis was tired from all the events of the day and laid on his bed for a while. It was only until Mitra also jumped on the bed that Vegis realized that there was only one bed and it wasn’t that big. He got up off the bed and lay on the couch instead and fell asleep after 20 minutes.

Mitra stared at Vegis unconscious body on the couch and walked over to him. She poked and prodded him several times to make sure he was asleep before heading to the bathroom and taking a shower. She didn’t know why she was doing it but from the memories she absorbed from Vegis, she should do it every once in a while. She got out and the clothes reformed around her as she walked to the window and stared at the open sky. It had been years since she saw it and even longer since she could fly through it. The longer she stared, the more the urge to fly filled her. The only thing that stopped her was the knowledge that she would likely be attacked if she tried to do so.

She stopped after staring for an hour and curled up on the bed, and fell asleep.
