Chapter 44: The Perception of Growth

  HUNGER!

My boosted Perception allowed me to better follow the pathways that the consumed energy entered my core. I felt the empowering flows enter a specific section of my core. Something I had not felt or understood prior to now.

  HUNGER!

If Omnis Vorare was the core as a whole, then Hypocrite Revolutionary and Neophyte Enchanter were the two halves.

And one of those halves was severely lacking at the moment. Yet, Eat the Rich was a class skill. I tried to push some of the absorbing power into my profession, but it felt like there was a wall there stopping any transference of the power.

  HUNGER!

I wanted it to go there, damnit! I wanted to be able to put my power wherever I needed it to go! I’ll have what is mine!

  HUNGER!

Eat the Rich. Uncommon. You gain additional experience when you eat anything of a higher level than yourself. You no longer gain any experience from eating creatures equal to or less than your level. Any consumption related skills have an increased effect when used on beings of a higher level than yourself. The higher the level disparity, the greater the effect.

Class Skill: Eat the Rich has been consumed by Omnis Vorare.

New Race Skill: Eat the Rich, Rare.

Eat the Rich. Rare. You gain additional experience when you eat anything of a higher level than yourself. You no longer gain any experience from eating creatures equal to or less than your level. Any consumption-related skills have an increased effect when used on beings of a higher level than yourself. The higher the level disparity, the greater the effect. You may choose to apply the gained experience to either your class or profession.

You have devoured Level 90 Aberrelephantine Gazer. Their highest stat was Endurance. Your base Endurance has increased by 45 points. Bonus stats from eating an Aberrelephantine Gazer of a higher level than yourself. All stats increased by 22. Bonus experience earned. Would you like to add this to your Class or Profession?

  I, of course, chose Profession.

DING! Profession: Neophyte Enchanter has increased from Level 28 to Level 43!

  New Profession skills available!

DING! Race: Omnis Vorare has increased from Level 45 to Level 52!

  New Race skills available!

UNIQUE SCENARIO ENCOUNTERED! SYSTEMIC ANALYSIS REQUIRED! PLEASE WAIT! Having your race subsume one of your class levels will count as your Level 60 Race Skill selection, as you have already unlocked your Level 50 selection.

Fifteen Profession levels! I nearly broke into a dance as I landed on my feet before the horrified Ernest. I took a moment to look over my new stats unmodified by the Tyrant’s Due before I addressed him.

With my thirty percent boost from Tyrant’s Due, all of my stats were in the lower 1000s. I whistled from the mouth on my chest, which startled Ernest, who I’d nearly forgotten was standing there. I looked closer at his wand and noticed it was made up of pure magic, likely part of some skill of his. Too bad.

“Y-y-you absorbed that huge monster into yourself!” Ernest stammered.

“And it was delicious! Now, about those Control Spheres you have there?”

He gripped his satchel tightly. “No! These are mine!”

His veloci-labradors growled at me adorably. “Can I have one of your hybrid critters, too?” In answer, they all leapt at me. I flared the hunger of my core out at them and they all stopped in front of me, whimpering.

“SIT!” I growled at them, and they readily obeyed.

Ernest stomped his foot, “Hey! I gave you all commands! Attack!”

With a Void Step, I appeared behind Ernest and patted him hard on the head. He collapsed, unconscious.

My five new pets lolled out their tongues and wagged their massive tails at me as I scooped up the satchel, which held the remaining three spheres.

  Quest: Forced Teamwork.

Objective: The monsters about the tutorial space have grown stronger and now wish to gain control of the spheres. The protections that were in place have faltered, and you are in danger. To regain protective bubbles, you must team up and get at least 50 control spheres together.

SECRET OBJECTIVE: Gather all 199 Control Spheres into your Soul Chamber.

Control Spheres within your Soul Chamber: 198/199.

Control Spheres Controlled by You: 199/199.

  Total Control Spheres Controlled: 199/199.

I opened a system chat with Bethany and Selka.

Dan: Bethany, are you and the rest already with Selka?

Bethany: We only have a few left, should be less than an hour.

Dan: Great! I’ll be teleporting in now. I’ll not be alone and I need people to not attack what I bring along.

Selka: I’m going to need more information than that.

Dan: I have some new pets! And a guy who wants to be the very best, like no one ever was.

Bethany: I’ll make sure the teleportation area is clear for you.

Selka: You just accept what he says without further questions?

Bethany: He’s going to do what he wants anyway. Just think of it like it’s a crazy story you get to tell other people. Plus, we can make bets on what weird thing he does next, such as what the pets will be!

Dan: I’m still here, you know!

Selka: I see. Bets could be a useful team building tool. Set it up.

Dan: Hurtful! I’m coming through now.

“Alright, buddies, grab each other’s tails in a ring.” I said. I don’t know how exactly, but they understood me and obeyed, forming a ring and gently biting down on their tails. I scooped up Ernest, gripped the back of one of the beasties, and triggered the teleportation function of the Control Spheres.

Teleportation feels weird, like a tug at your abdomen that pulls you through space to arrive at your target location. Not quite the same as when I Void Step. Thankfully, I seem to be immune to nausea.

  My veloci-labradors were not.
