The Shin’ing

  Shadowfall Kingdom

  Vincent

  Tournament Grounds

  Kaijuu Ryu

I start heading toward Loyd as soon as he begins announcing:

"For our first match of the afternoon, Prince Wilfred Shadow-Wolf will be facing off against… Kaijuu…"

He pauses for dramatic effect. I already know the reason. What else could it be but—

  "ROKA-SAMA!!"

  I knew it.

  The crowd goes wild.

They obviously expected the opposite, like they requested.

Shanon must be confident if she chose Felmina instead.

Roka comes walking up like the walking dead. Sloooooow.

She stops in front of me.

"I don't want to do it! Can I forfeit?"

  "No."

I gesture for her to come closer.

I raise my hand and whisper in her ear.

She blushes, then death-stares Wilfred as I pull my hand away.

"Wilfred onii-chan, I'm gonna kill you!"

She points her short sword at him.

  He smiles back confidently.

  As expected of a prince.

They take their stances. Wilfred wields a wide, double-edged longsword—its length about two-thirds of his height, the blade extremely wide, around twenty centimeters, and nearly five centimeters thick.

They stand about twenty-five meters apart.

I’m positioned about ten meters behind where they’ll meet if they charge straight at one another. I lift my right arm into the air. Loyd, standing at the edge of the ring with the megaphone, shouts:

  "START!!"

  They rush each other.

When they get about ten meters apart, Roka activates Gravity Up.

  She slows down slightly.

  Wilfred raises his metal shield.

"Roka nee-chan! I broke your building blocks when we were kids!"

  Roka freezes.

Then slowly turns toward him, growling.

"I see… so it was YOOOUUU."

  He smiles.

  She’s pissed.

She charges in blindly and starts overhead-whacking him like she used to when digging trenches.

On her fourth hit, she activates Gravity Up on the shortsword.

The shortsword goes from weighing five kilograms to fifty.

She unleashes a flurry of downward strikes.

Wilfred blocks them all with the shield, but he’s getting pushed back.

  Roka starts getting winded.

  Wilfred charges.

He bashes her with his shield—enough to send her flying under normal circumstances—but she only steps back once.

  He drops his shield.

  Roka watches it fall.

Then looks back up at him.

  He has his eyes closed.

The broad side of his sword is facing her.

  "SHINING!"

The sword flashes like a giant flashbang.

He swipes at her leg as she tries to recover from the daze.

He cuts off her left foot just above the ankle.

Her HP drops to three-quarters as she collapses, screaming.

I throw my left hand up in a panic and shout, "STOP!"

  Then Loyd announces:

  "THAT'S ENOUGH! WINNER, WILFRED SHADOW-WOLF!"

But Wilfred is already force-feeding her an HP potion.

  He looks straight at me.

I put my hand on her forehead as she clutches her footless lower leg.

  "Sleep."

The empty space where her foot used to be fills with light.

Her foot regrows within five seconds.

The light disperses like a bursting soap bubble.

  She’s fine.

I move to pick her up, but he stops me with his hand.

I help her into his arms, then hand him her severed foot—still inside the boot.

I place it on her stomach.

  They leave.

The crowd is losing their minds.

I can feel the vibrations in the air as they cheer.

"Well, that was exciting, huh, folks!"

  I watch them leave.

  That guy’s good.

  I like him.

"And now for our next match, former General Shanon Wilson versus Kaijuu Felmina-sama!"

The cheering continues as Shanon and Felmina make their way toward me in the center.

The crowd quiets when they stop in front of me.

  Shanon asks:

"What did you say to Roka before the match?"

Well, this saves me some effort.

I lean over and whisper to Felmina with my encryption hand up.

"If you manage to beat him, I'll bang your brains out tonight."

Felmina covers her face with both hands.

  "Felmina, same goes for you."

She drops to her haunches, still covering her face.

When she finally moves her hands:

  "AAAAAAAH MOOOO! Stop distracting MEEEEE!"

  She’s beet red.

Loyd and Shanon look at us like we’re insane.
