Chapter 31: Cerberus Awakens

The raft had barely cleared the blood pit’s shore when the water ahead began to boil, not with waves, but with something deeper, a low, rumbling growl rising from beneath the surface like thunder trapped in the riverbed.

Jax gripped the front rail, moly pouch still warm at his belt, the empty bronze bowl from the ritual heavy in his pouch, Tiresias’s prophecy echoing in every mind: six men lost, one of their own.

The crew rowed harder, oars splashing in frantic rhythm, faces slick with sweat and mist, the golden calf lowing in terror as the raft rocked violently from side to side.

  Eurylochus shouted over the noise.

  “Something’s coming up! Faster!”

  Thea pointed ahead, voice sharp.

“There, shadow in the water. Massive. Three heads!”

Phil nocked an arrow, hands steady despite the rocking.

“Cerberus. The guardian. Circe didn’t warn us about this.”

Ment gripped his pot like a lifeline.

“Three heads, one body. We hit the middle one. The rest follow.”

Pol and Kid pulled with everything they had, muscles burning.

“Captain! What do we do?” Pol yelled.

Jax felt the cold certainty settle.

“We fight. We don’t run. The prophecy said losses. Not today.”

  The water erupted.

Cerberus rose, three massive heads, each the size of a horse, jaws dripping black ichor, eyes glowing red, six ears per head twitching at every sound.

The body was lion-like, serpent tail whipping the water into foam, claws raking the surface as it lunged.

  A blue box flashed, crimson-edged.

The first head snapped at the raft.

  Eurylochus raised his shield.

The jaws clamped down, bronze denting, wood splintering.

  Jax shouted.

“Phil! Eyes! Thea! Flank! Ment, Pol, Kid, hold the raft steady! Eurylochus, tank the center!”

  The crew moved.

The middle head lunged again, jaws wide, teeth like swords.

Eurylochus braced, shield taking the full force, the impact driving him to his knees, wood cracking under the pressure.

Phil loosed arrows at the left head’s eyes.

One struck true. The head reared back, roaring, black ichor spraying across the deck, burning where it touched.

Thea darted to the right, blade slashing at the serpent tail.

It whipped back, nearly knocking her overboard.

Pol caught her arm, pulling her back.

Ment swung his pot at the right head’s snout.

It connected with a wet crack. The head snapped sideways, dazed for a moment.

Kid thrust his spear into the middle head’s throat.

The beast roared, shaking the raft like a toy.

Jax leaped onto the middle head’s neck, using the thick mane for handholds, dagger plunging deep into the flesh behind the ear.

  The head bucked wildly.

The other two heads turned on him.

  A blue box appeared.

The left head snapped at Jax.

He rolled off the neck, landing on the raft, rolling to avoid the teeth.

The right head lunged at Eurylochus.

  His shield cracked. He staggered.

  The crew rallied.

Phil’s arrow struck the right head’s eye.

  It blinded, roaring.

Thea slashed the serpent tail again.

  It recoiled.

Ment clubbed the middle head’s jaw.

It snapped shut inches from Jax.

Pol and Kid thrust spears in unison, pinning the left head’s leg.

  Jax shouted.

  “Middle head! All together!”

  The crew focused.

  Eurylochus bashed with his shield.

  Phil loosed arrows.

  Thea slashed.

  Ment clubbed.

  Pol and Kid speared.

Jax leaped again, dagger plunging into the middle head’s throat.

  The beast screamed.

  The other heads faltered.

  The body thrashed, tail whipping.

  The raft rocked dangerously.

Cerberus reared, three heads roaring in unison.

The middle head bled black ichor, eyes dimming.

  Jax shouted.

  “Now! Finish it!”

Phil’s last arrow struck the middle head’s eye.

  The beast staggered.

  Eurylochus bashed the left head.

  Thea slashed the right.

  Ment clubbed the middle.

Pol and Kid thrust spears into the throat.

  Jax plunged his dagger deep.

The beast screamed one last time.

  The body sank.

The heads vanished beneath the water.

  The sea calmed.

  A blue box appeared.

The crew collapsed on the raft, panting, bleeding from cuts and burns, but alive.

  Jax looked at them.

  No losses.

  Not today.

The raft pulled away from the Underworld’s edge, the mist thinning, the sea warming as they returned to the living world.

The crew sat in silence, faces pale, hands shaking on oars.

  Kid spoke first.

“We did it. No one died.”

  Pol looked at Jax.

  “But the prophecy said six.”

  Jax met their eyes.

“Not today. We carry it. We fight it.”

  Eurylochus nodded slowly.

  “We follow. Whatever the cost.”

  A blue box appeared.

  Jax looked at the horizon.

  Smoke rose in the distance.

  Ithaca.

  He gripped the rail.

  The final trial waited.
