Chapter 10: Love Always Perseveres!

  Chapter 10: Love always Perseveres.

George walked back to his office from the meeting with Micah and the big boss, “Jude, Cynthia, can we talk in my office please.” He unlocked the door and both walked in behind him. “Please close the door” he said.

Sitting down, Jude asked “What’s up?” “I’m afraid I don’t have good news.” George said very seriously. Both Jude and Cynthia tensed. Jude sat a bit more forward on the chair and leaned into the discussion. Cynthia looked visibly shaken. She began trembling uncontrollably, “what now?” she thought.

“Unfortunately, we have to let one of you go.” George said with his fingers crossed. There was a strange gleam on him. He seemed to almost be enjoying the moment, relishing in his power. He let Jude and Cynthia stew a little in the tension. He could see that Cynthia was visibly affected by his statement. “So this is what power feels like?” George thought to himself, “Look at her. She’s beside herself. She can barely sit.” He turned and looked at Jude who was now sitting back in the chair waiting to hear the next words. “Why is he not a nervous wreck?” George thought, irritation beginning to build, “He might be losing his job and yet he’s as cool as a cucumber? WHY?”

George’s face had turned stern. The emotion had left and he sat back casually in his chair and released the words that Cynthia and Jude had been waiting for “Jude, thank you for your time with us. But your services are no longer needed.” Cynthia broke down crying, “thank you. thank you” she kept snivelling. George ignored her and leaned towards the table again to witness the damage on Jude. “Okay, thank you for the opportunity. May I know why?” Jude asked with no expression on his face and in his most professional tone. “It’s simple really. We don’t need you. Cynthia was demoted and I am an economist. There are no skills you bring to the table anymore with me in the Strategy Manager position. For these reasons I can no longer justify the budget expense of your salary.” “Okay, that seems reasonable. When is my last working day?” asked Jude. “Today. You will not be replaced so there is no reason to wait until a replacement joins. You’re also within your probation period still so we can actually terminate you without notice.” George said, now clicking his mouse while opening invisible boxes on his desk top. “Wipe your face Cynthia. For heaven’s sake – enough already.” snapped George as he shoved the tissue box on his desk towards her.

A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

“Okay, is there anything else?” George asked them chirpily. Neither replied, “You can leave then. Leave the door open. Jude you can pack your things and go. Just leave any company property on the desk. Cynthia will hand it back in and sort it all out after you’ve left.” said George. “I can stay to go through the work with you and hand everything over if you like? I also don’t mind handing my stuff in?” suggested Jude. “There is really no need. I’d prefer to just go through it all myself. Cynthia doesn’t mind either. Thank you – All the best.” said George.

Jude packed his things and went to his car. He sat in the car in stunned silence, shell shocked. Just like that – gone. His contract had been terminated. “Father, I don’t know what just happened, but I saw how he treated Cynthia… I don’t want to work under somebody like that. Maybe this is a good thing?”
