Conquest 38 – Knight Commander Tobias Comes

Our ambush plan was botched, my own forces dealing with a surprise attack at our most vulnerable. Everyone was scattered and forced into their own skirmish, and I could only trust they could handle themselves. Meanwhile I was helping Damian quell the attacking forces surrounding him.

Luckily with his [Spatial Sense] it made it difficult for them get a good hit on him, being only slowed down with protecting V, the little goblin having no combat skills or experience was forced to hide behind the black bear. That left me with time to focus on the more important targets.

I noticed there were some of them who took the least amount of damage from my makeshift avalanche, so I went after them first. Sprinting at them and clashing with the closest one while ignoring the rest for Damian to take care of. Indeed, when I struck him his reaction speed was enough for him to parry against my attack, despite my small stature making it difficult to aim at my direction.

“Man, this kobold is a feisty one. Guess the report the knight commander gave was true.” He said with a look of excitement on his face.

It must have been that knight captain that tried to invade my town before. I’ll have to make a note to pay a visit to the man when I come for the kingdom later. Whatever the case I’ll have to keep in mind the kind of information he could have given them, though fortunately I didn’t give out too much on how I fight. After all I mainly used his fight to help improve my sword skill instead and using a bit of my [Basic Elemental Magic] to finish him off.

Using that to my advantage with our weapons clashed, I coated my own sword with flames, heating it up with the edges of the fire inching closer to my enemy. It was making him nervous and causing him to lose his concentration.

Seeing this I decided to taunt him a little bit. “What’s wrong, afraid of a little fire? ~”

“Shut up you little monster!!” That was all he could say in response. His anger clouded his judgement, giving me the moment to twist his sword around and forced him to let it go. Afterwards I conjured an Ice Ball and sent it blasting to his chest, knocking him out.

“Alright who’s next!?” I taunted the others, egging them on while motioning them to come on.

As I looked around, it seemed we were gaining momentum. With the reduced numbers Damian had enough room to push back the knights, with help from V who was doing their best to help. They were using their [Map] to see the enemy movements and informed Damian of oncoming danger.

Meanwhile, with Mordred’s help the weaker minions managed to push back the enemies. One after another they managed to knock a soldier down. And of course, the orcs and wolves had an easier time with their own fights. With how things were going we should be able to finish things off not too long now.

But just as I was finishing that thought after knocking out another soldier, a dark shadow started to loom down on me as a voice deep and intimidating started to speak.

“Well well, seems the information that brat gave us was correct. You’re a lot stronger than you look little kobold.”

Without delay I swung from behind me, only to find myself suddenly launched back in full force, roughly landing with my body on the ground. Whatever that was just now must have [Strength] similar to Mordred!

I looked back to see who had attacked me only to be met by an terrifying knight, clearly higher rank than the others towering above me. Once he noticed me looking at me, he continued to speak with a tone that I could tell was meant to mock me.

“I should introduce myself. I am the knight commander of the great Mivtic Kingdom Tobias. A pleasure to meet you. I heard so much about you.”

I couldn’t take the chance, while he was distracted with introductions, I began to use [Material Forge] on the ground below hi-

Suddenly I felt a jolt of pain at my chest, forcing me to stop what I was doing as I realized that the man had kicked my stomach!

“Now none of that, I am quite aware about that particular skill of yours.”

I tried again, raising my claw up to activ-

Another jolt of pain spread through my body, this time coming from my raised claw which was now being stomped down by the knight commander. “As I said, I know all about that skill and how you seem to activate it through how you motion your little claw.”

As if to drive the point across he began to twist his boot down on my claw, grinding it more on the ground like paste as the pain became unbearable for me. “ARRRGGGHHHHH!!!!”

My screams of agony could be heard by my henchman and minions who suddenly stopped what they were doing and seeing the state I was in they all called out to me.

  “Boss!!”

  “Chief!!”

  “Sir!!”

  “Mr. Vlad!!”

The other knights took that moment of hesitation to counterattack and managed to injure some of the weaker minions. This seemed to only infuriate Mordred though. “Rrghh!! I have no time for you weaklings!! But the boss said I needed to keep you all safe!”

V meanwhile couldn’t stop looking away, despite how much it was upsetting them. “Is Mr. Vlad going to be alright?!”

The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

“He’ll be fine V.” Damian tried to reassure them, all while keeping their focus on protecting them.

The knight commander Tobias was watching this as he continued to taunt me. “Seems you do have some loyal followers. They seem to actually care about you. Who knew you savage monsters had a heart?”

He continued to grind at my claw, forcing more screams out of my mouth. It was hard to concentrate through it all, but I had to do something fast! I tried to focus, while he was distracted twisting his boot at my claw and having fun with my agony. I tried to use my other claw to motion my skill to activate. I needed to be quick while he was focused on my other claw. Using the ground below him was out of the question as he would notice the change quickly so that left me with one other option.

At the ground behind him, I quickly conjured a large spike with the aim being to pierce through the commander’s armor. It was fast, fast enough that he shouldn’t have had time to react. The tip of the spike came into contact with his armor ready to drill a hole right through it and his body but to my surprise it only managed to make a small dent instead.

But why? I never had that kind of trouble before. Even Mordred would have difficulty in dealing with my spikes and his hide should be stronger than whatever armor he was wearing. Instinctively I used my [Game Screen] to peer into this man’s stats and his equipment.

So that’s why…. Ignoring the fact his stats rival both Damian and Mordred his equipment was something to dread about. His [Magic steel Great Sword] seemed similar to the captain’s own sword albeit larger in size but what really got me was his armor. Mithril, I never found that kind of ore deposit back in the cave, so it really is a rare metal that exists in this world. What’s worse is that it’ll make it more difficult for me to use my skills against this man.

“Hm, nice try it was a good attempt at a surprise attack. But unfortunately for you your little trick won’t work on me, not while I’m wearing this on.” He pounded his fist at his chest armor to signal what he was pointing at. He then grinded his foot even harder, causing me to scream even louder.

“AARRGGGHH!!!!” It was excruciating, my arm didn’t feel this much agony since my fight with the orcs. I tried to move it away, but I found it was taking all this effort to even move it an inch.

“Now don’t look too upset, you’re given special attention considering it was you who caused our failed takeover. You should be honored to do that much for us.” Hah sure he says that, but the tone of his voice says otherwise. There was a mix of both mockery and anger in it.

He then grabbed my broken arm, more pain coursing through my body as I dropped, he was NOT being gentle with me at all. “But now it’s time we take you back with us. I should just kill you here and now, but my king wishes to have an audience with you.”

I tried to resist but his grip on me was too strong as he started to take me away. Of course, seeing this everyone had started to drop what they were doing and instead had their entire focus on trying to save me, but Tobias wasn’t going to have any of that.

“Keep them at bay. His majesty only wishes to have an audience with this little kobold.”

“YES SIR!!” the rest of the knights did their utmost on forcing most of my minions back. With all of them focused on saving me instead of fighting back, this proved to be easy for them to do. Even the orcs and wolves were having difficulty with some of the orcs even losing a limb or two, slowing them down while the wolves found themselves kicked off to the side.

Fear was starting to take over the weaker minions who were struggling to make their own bodies move. Damian himself was too occupied to keep V safe though he had a look of regret in not being able to help. The only one who managed to get close enough was Mordred.

“Give me back my boss!!” His eyes were starting to get frantic; he must have activated [Bloody Rage] without realizing it!!

He was acting without reason and moving with reckless abandon. Though with the extra boost of strength none of the soldiers could keep him at back for too long. It didn’t take long for him to reach us. He had his axe in hand, ready to strike the knight commander down.

This did not seem to faze Tobias who still had me clenched tightly in his hand. For the first time I saw him pull out his sword as mana started to draw into the blade. The buildup was quick, and it didn’t take long before the density of the mana started to feel overwhelming. Being right next to it I could tell...

“M…. Move out of the way Mordred!!!” I screamed out, but it was in vain. He couldn’t hear me, still deep in his state of rage.

“Hmph…typical for a savage monster.” Tobias throws me to the ground as he holds his sword with both hands which glowed with intensity. The force with which he threw me had a strong impact on my head as it hit the ground as everything started to dark, with only the sounds of weapons clashing before being replaced instead with the sound of metal breaking.

  ……

  …..

  ….

When I came to the first thing, I noticed was the feeling of pain from having my claw crushed as well as finding myself handcuffed and surrounded by nothing but cold dark bricks and a set of iron bars, with the only light coming from a few candles. I could tell immediately what had happened to me.

  …. I was captured.
