"If it isn't Yae-Fae's eighth child," Cheyin said, her footsteps crunching on the snow and cobblestone as she advanced toward Vestella. "I never expected to see you here. Are you still engaged with my old man and Soreine's forces, or have you decided to take a step back from the battlefield?"
Rhaya shifted her position to defend Vestella, but Vestella stepped forward, hands held neatly in front of her hip. "Perhaps, Cheyin. Though the weather is the perfect occasion to relax. Besides your preoccupation with my presence, what possibly ails you that you would spend your time in Verdantine?"
Idalia watched as Vestella peered upward to stare at Cheyin, while Cheyin looked smugly downward.
"You know," Cheyin began, "you're more adorable than the reports could ever suggest." Startling everyone, she thrust her arms forward and lifted Vestella off the ground as if she were weightless. Despite the despair on Rhaya's face, Vestella stared ahead, cold and steady, at Cheyin's face.
"Well, now it's perfect that we can meet eye to eye," Vestella smiled, her eyes closed. She almost looked like one of the dolls in her room: porcelain, pretty... and unnerving. Vestella's attire had changed to suit the winter occasion as well: a thick fur-trimmed coat that seamlessly blended into a skirt with a petal pattern.
Idalia wondered if Rhaya was going to intervene, since Kelix wasn't, as he stared boredly away from the group with his hands tucked in his pockets.
Suddenly, the air felt charged with danger when Idalia noticed the silver flower petals twirling around Cheyin and Vestella with an ominous rhythm.
Pale and sweet, Vestella's heat was strong on the petals, much like her scent, and the petals drew closer, swirling like sharks pretending to be leaves caught in a whirlpool.
Both Kelix and Rhaya shifted their attention, and even Cheyin slackened as a petal drifted past her ear. Doro barked a few times. Vestella's eyes shimmered with a faint purple glow.
Cheyin set Vestella down gently, her expression momentarily softening as she took in the details of Vestella's outfit. "You clean up nicely. I must say, it fits you better than that militaristic garb you used to sport."
Rhaya crossed her arms, her brow furrowed in suspicion. "And what brings you to Verdantine, Cheyin? Surely you didn't come just to dally with the likes of us."
"Do you really think I'd waste my time on you, Rhaya? I'm here for the food and a little adventure," Cheyin replied with a wink, causing Rhaya to smile.
"Hopefully, you're willing to share, Princess," Rhaya said. "We're on a little adventure of our own. I managed to score a sizable deal on the fabled Luminbark latte they have around these parts."
Despite Rhaya's easygoing words, Idalia sensed, and even saw, the air pulsating with a captivating tune as the usual calm vibrations that rippled off Rhaya shifted to a screech of metal within a tornado's swirl. "Next time you touch Vestella, I won't be so kind." The metallic screech erupted into a scream.
Lief stepped forward, trying to diffuse the tension. "Alright, everyone, let's not turn this into a feud. Please and thank you."
"Oh, you're no fun, Lief. Although our mission is to eat," Cheyin declared cheerfully, pretending to be oblivious to Lief's discontent. She gestured to Idalia, who was still bouncing on her paws with excitement. "And you should join us! We were just about to hit the Bakery of Delight."
Vestella's lips curved ever so slightly. "Ah, treats. It seems that even amidst conflict, you haven't lost your taste for indulgence, Cheyin."
"Of course," Cheyin replied, her attention shifting toward the boy behind Vestella. She probably didn't recognize him as Kelix, judging by her curious expression. Kelix watched her in turn, remaining silent. "New guard? Was Rhaya not suitable enough, Vestella? Perhaps you needed company from someone your own age. Heading to the playground next?" There was lots of cheek in Cheyin's tone.
Kelix straightened slightly, his posture tightening as he felt the weight of Cheyin's gaze. He had heard plenty about this woman, but standing in front of her was an entirely different experience. "I'm Kelix," he introduced himself. "And I think Rhaya is doing just fine as Vestella's guardian."
Rhaya shot him an appreciative look, though her expression remained guarded as she stepped slightly in front of Vestella.
"Kelix!" Idalia exclaimed, bounding toward her friend. "How did you all find yourselves up here? You even brought Vestella with you. What happened to the troops—?"
Kelix bent down to one knee and shook his head; he mouthed, "Not in front of her."
Idalia blinked, her excitement momentarily dimmed by Kelix's serious gesture. She quickly glanced at Vestella, who maintained her composed demeanor. "Okay," Idalia whispered back, her ears dropping slightly as she stepped back.
Eyeing the group before her, Cheyin continued speaking. "I see your little posse is out and about, although I'm surprised you'd venture this far without backup. Should we consider that a statement of confidence or a reckless choice?"
Rhaya's posture stiffened, yet she laughed heartily. "We don't need your suggestions on military tactics, Cheyin. Those of us who operate outside of your influence are perfectly capable of handling our own affairs."
Cheyin shrugged. "I'm just stating the obvious." Her gaze shifted back to Idalia, who was now tugging vigorously at her pant leg. From deep within Idalia's belly, her stomach rumbled.
"Can we eat now? I want to try everything!"
"Right you are!" Cheyin turned back to the group. "Join us if you'd like. The more, the merrier! We could use some extra taste testers."
"Thanks, but we'll pass," Rhaya said firmly, crossing her arms defensively. "We have other matters to attend to—"
"I don't want to eat here!" Idalia declared. She sniffed the air, discovering a much more enticing scent. "Not here! Not the bakery. There's something much more delicious elsewhere!"
The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
Her eyes lit up with a heat-like sheen, and her throat yowled, loud and proud, as several portals materialized beneath everyone present: Kelix, Rhaya, Vestella, Lief, Cheyin, and her newfound friend Doro. They were all coming with her, whether they panicked or not.
"Idalia, wait—!" they exclaimed. Though Vestella remained calm, with an enthused smile as she sunk into the portal.
The world around them melted away as swirling colors and shapes engulfed Idalia and her companions. One moment they were standing in the snowy streets of Verdantine, and the next, they were spiraling through a vibrant tunnel of light; each hue more vivid than the last. Doro barked with glee, clearly enjoying the wild ride as he floated alongside the group, his tail wagging furiously.
When they landed, it wasn't in a bakery, but rather a bustling restaurant filled with booths adorned with shimmering fabrics and tantalizing aromas.
The air was rich with the scent of grilled meats, fresh herbs, and baked treats far beyond mere gingerbread. Idalia could see a huge pot of bubbling broth where a chef was ladling generous portions into bowls, and the sizzle of skewers over an open flame made her stomach rumble louder than ever.
"I thought Verdantine didn't have meat!"
Lief, landing awkwardly on his shoulders as if attempting to perform a headstand, growled his response, "Correct, but we do have plant-based options, and this is one of the rare restaurants with the permit to—"
He groaned when Cheyin landed on his chest, but she didn't lift herself. "Oh! This restaurant was on my list of places to dine! You've done great discovering this hidden gem, Idalia!" she exclaimed. "I can't believe you chose this place without even knowing!"
Idalia beamed under Cheyin's praise. "It smells amazing! I want to try everything!" She dashed toward a display filled with colorful dishes, her joy seemingly contagious as Doro bounded happily alongside her.
Lief pushed himself up, brushing snow from his clothes with an exasperated sigh. "Just… stay close, alright? We don't want to attract any unwanted attention. Remember, we're in Verdantine." He cast a quick glance around the restaurant, noting the patrons but guard up just the same. "I swear if any laws are broken…"
Vestella, having regained her composure, surveyed the bustling atmosphere. "This is rather lively," she remarked, her keen eyes catching sight of a pair of musicians playing a lively tune in the corner. "I can see the appeal."
Rhaya shifted her stance, scanning the room for any threats but also intrigued by the food. "It seems more chaotic than I imagined," she said, trying to shake off her initial wariness. "Still, the aromas are quite compelling."
"Are you all coming or not?" Idalia called from a nearby booth, as she waved them over. She had nabbed a plush seat that looked particularly inviting, the table already filled with plates of assorted appetizers. "I think I ordered too much!" she laughed, her eyes dancing with delight.
"Well, that's one thing we have in common," Cheyin replied, sliding in next to Idalia and shooting her a conspiratorial smile. "More is always better, especially when you're trying to impress the crowd." She looked at everyone, her expression mischievous. "And by the looks of things, this place could use a little excitement!"
Kelix shook his head with a wry smile as he took a seat across from them. "I didn't know food could be such a powerful motivator. I could get used to this way of traveling."
He looked over at Rhaya and Vestella, expecting them to join him. But instead, they remained standing, still somewhat hesitant as they exchanged glances. "Are we really going to eat here… with her?" Rhaya asked, her brow furrowing slightly, torn between reluctance and temptation.
"Absolutely," Idalia squealed. "Cheyin's a papa thief, but she knows how to kick back and enjoy herself! Sit, Vest! Sit, Rhaya!" She gestured with a paw toward a seat opposite her.
A waiter appeared, his arm draped with a cloth, and his gaze fell on Cheyin. "Miss, please tell your pet to quiet down and allow us to serve. It would also be best to have her seated on the floor." He shot a sidelong glance at Idalia, who gasped at the insult.
"I'm no pet! I'm Idalia!"
Cheyin raised an eyebrow, amusement dancing in her eyes. "My 'pet' is neither too loud nor overly enthusiastic. She's just excited about the food, as we all are. Right, Ida?"
Idalia nodded vigorously. "Exactly! Food is the best thing ever!"
The waiter, unfazed, glanced back at Cheyin. "Very well, just ensure she keeps her volume down. We value the ambiance here." With a slight bow, he left them to figure out the chaos that was about to unfold.
The moment he departed, Rhaya pointed at Cheyin, "I know what you're up to," and she turned to face Idalia, "Don't let her fool you. She is trying to manipulate you into doing something reckless. She may act all charming, but there's usually a plan lurking beneath that jovial exterior."
The waiter returned, taking orders from everyone, and he even placed a few more appetizers on the table.
Meanwhile, Cheyin feigned innocence, a playful twinkle in her eye. "Me? Distract? How could you accuse me of such a thing when all I want is to share this feast with our new friends?" She gestured to the array of colorful dishes, her smile never wavering.
But Idalia, caught in the excitement of food and friends, was oblivious. "Let's eat!" she declared, grabbing a skewer of grilled vegetables and taking a big bite. "Mmm! So good!"
Rhaya shot a warning glance at Cheyin. "You're not off the hook that easily. Just because we're sharing a meal doesn't mean I trust you, especially with everything at stake."
"Trust," Cheyin replied, rolling her eyes as she reached for an appetizer platter. "For some, it's a rare delicacy, like that honey-soaked baklava over there. But you see, in Orun culture, sharing a meal has a way of breaking down barriers."
Kelix chuckled, clearly amused by the back-and-forth. "If nothing else, this is certainly a more entertaining way to handle our business." He picked up a piece of fried dough, coated in sugar, and offered it to Vestella. "Want to try?"
Vestella accepted the treat, not from his hand, but directly from the platter itself. After poking at it with a fork, she brought the food to her nose and gave it a cute sniff. Her serious demeanor softened as she took a tiny bite. "Not bad," she admitted. Rhaya wiped her cheek with a napkin, and for a moment, a pout spread across Vestella's lips.
Idalia tilted her head, perplexed. "Why did you do that?"
Vestella looked up at Idalia, her cheeks slightly flushed from the unexpected delight of the sugary treat. "It's called sampling. One must always analyze before diving in, even with pastries," she explained, her voice calm and composed, yet with a hint of a playful undertone that surprised Idalia.
"But they can't hurt you! Besides, you might miss out on something amazing if you overthink it!" Idalia protested, though as she reached for a dish brimming with colorful, fried pastries.
Cheyin leaned in closer, nudging Idalia playfully. "See? This little one gets it. Life is too sweet to linger too long in indecision! Take a leap! Besides, what's the worst that could happen at a restaurant? Bad service? A little indigestion? Pfft! Worth it for the joy of food!"
Rhaya sighed, her posture relaxing a fraction, but she still held her glare on Cheyin. "Your carefree attitude may come back to haunt you, Cheyin." She glanced at Idalia, whose eyes sparkled with excitement. "But, if it helps her relax…" she trailed off, finally conceding a small smile.
Idalia seized the moment, her excitement infectious. "See! Even Rhaya wants to join in! We should all just try everything!" She then grabbed another skewer, this time with pieces of grilled meat interspersed with vibrant peppers, took a bite, and offered it to Vestella.
"Here, try this! You'll love it!" she encouraged, practically standing on the table.
Vestella hesitated, her hands raised as she made a rare expression, as though she were staring at a hazard. There was nothing wrong with the skewer except for the excess Liorex drool on the stick. Rhaya, Cheyin, and Kelix laughed in unison. It was a startling sight. They were mocking her!
"I wouldn't eat that," Lief said, peering up from his bowl of noodles. "There's no telling what bacteria lies in that one's mouth."
"Ida's affection!" Idalia snarled. "If Vest doesn't want it, then… then you can have this, Doro!"
Idalia tossed the skewer toward Doro, whose tail wagged furiously at the sight of the grilled meat. The dog lunged forward, snatching it and nibbling it, much to everyone's amusement.
"See, even Doro has better taste!" she declared triumphantly, watching as Doro devoured the offering with gusto.
Lief shook his head. "Well, at least one of you is willing to take risks," he admitted. Laughter erupted around the table again as the group began to share pleasantries and jokes. The mood shifted once more, thickening like fog, as Vestella stared intently at Cheyin.
"Forgive me for asking, Cheyin, but I must request a ceasefire between our forces. It would be beneficial if we formed an alliance, so we can gain an edge against your father's army."
