This story takes pce between Chapter 7 and Chapter 8 of the main narrative.
---
The cave was warm despite the autumn chill outside, filled with the soft sounds of sleeping companions and the gentle crackle of a small fire.
Lilith y awake, as she often did in these early hours, watching the py of shadows on the stone ceiling. Fenris slept curled against the far wall, his small form wrapped in bnkets, his face peaceful in a way it never was during waking hours. Kael was beside her, one arm draped loosely across her waist, his breathing deep and steady.
She could watch them forever.
The thought came unbidden, surprising her with its intensity. She'd spent forty years alone, isoted, convinced that she would never have anyone to watch, anyone to care about, anyone to love. Now she had two people sleeping peacefully beside her, trusting her to keep watch while they rested.
It felt like a dream she might wake from at any moment.
But the warmth of Kael's body against hers was real. The soft sounds of Fenris's breathing were real. The ache in her wings from yesterday's flight was real.
This was real. They were real. She was real.
---
Kael stirred beside her, his arm tightening slightly around her waist.
"Morning," he murmured, his voice rough with sleep.
"Morning." She turned to face him, propping herself on one elbow. "You're awake early."
"Could say the same about you." He smiled, that warm smile that still made her heart skip. "Couldn't sleep?"
"Didn't want to." She traced the line of his jaw with one finger. "Wanted to watch you instead. Make sure you were really here."
His expression softened. "I'm really here. Not going anywhere."
"I know. I just..." She paused, searching for words. "Forty years is a long time to be alone. I keep waiting for this to end. For the dream to shatter and the cage to reappear."
Kael reached up, cupping her face gently. "Look at me."
She did.
"I'm real. Fenris is real. This cave, this fire, this moment—all real." His thumb traced her cheek. "And none of it is going anywhere. We're your family now. For as long as you want us."
"For as long as I want you?" She ughed softly, the sound catching in her throat. "Kael, I want you forever. Is that too much to ask?"
"Not too much." He pulled her closer, kissing her forehead. "Not nearly too much."
---
They y together as the fire crackled and the cave slowly brightened with approaching dawn.
Lilith's wings spread slightly, catching the warmth, feeling more alive than they had in decades. Every part of her felt more alive, actually—her skin tingling with awareness, her heart racing at thoughts she'd long buried, her body humming with a contentment she'd almost forgotten.
"Kael?"
"Hmm?"
"Thank you. For Fenris. For the way you treat him." She traced patterns on his chest as she spoke. "He's been through so much. Lost his mother, his home, everything. And you just... you just took him in. Like it was the most natural thing in the world."
"He's a good kid. Deserves better than what he got."
"Most people wouldn't see that. Most people would see a feral wolf-boy and run the other way." She looked up at him. "But you saw him. Really saw him. The same way you saw me."
Kael was quiet for a moment. Then: "When I was a kid, about his age, I lost my parents. My brother went to war and never came back. I was alone for years, surviving on the streets, until a mercenary company took me in. They didn't have to. They could have left me to starve. But they didn't."
"What happened to them?"
"Most of them died. Protecting that kid I mentioned, the one the Empire was hunting." His voice was rough. "I couldn't save them. But I can save him. I can give him what they gave me—a second chance."
Lilith kissed his chest, right over his heart. "They'd be proud of you."
"Maybe."
"I know they would."
---
Fenris stirred, and they both fell silent, watching as the boy slowly woke.
His gold eyes blinked open, unfocused at first, then sharpening as he took in his surroundings. He saw them watching him and immediately looked away, his ears reddening.
"Morning," he muttered.
"Morning, little brother." Kael's voice was warm. "Sleep well?"
"Yeah." A pause. "You?"
"Well enough."
Fenris sat up, wrapping his bnket around his shoulders. Shadow, who'd been curled at his feet, rose and padded to the cave entrance, sniffing the morning air.
"The wolves are restless," Fenris observed. "Something's bothering them."
Kael was on his feet instantly, his rexed demeanor repced by alert vigince. "What kind of something?"
"Not sure. They can't quite sense it either." Fenris closed his eyes, reaching through the Pack Bond. "Big. Far away. Not a threat yet, but... watching."
The words hung in the air, heavy with implication.
Lilith rose, stretching her wings. "We should move. Put more distance between us and whatever's watching."
Kael nodded, already gathering their supplies. "Fenris, can the wolves scout ahead? Find us a safe route?"
"Yeah." Fenris was already communicating with them, his brow furrowed in concentration. "They say there's a valley a few hours east. Hidden. Protected. Might be what we're looking for."
"The sanctuary." Kael's eyes lit up. "That could be it."
Lilith felt a surge of hope. A pce to call home. A pce to build something permanent. A pce where they could finally stop running.
"Then let's go." She moved to help with the packing. "Let's find this valley."
---
They broke camp quickly, the morning's peace repced by purposeful movement.
Fenris ranged ahead with the wolves, his young face set in lines of concentration as he interpreted their reports. Kael walked at the front of the group, his sword ready, his eyes scanning constantly. Lilith brought up the rear, her wings spread slightly, her senses alert for any threat from behind.
The forest around them was beautiful—ancient trees draped in moss, streams of clear water cascading over rocks, wildlife going about its business unaware of the drama unfolding around it. Lilith drank it in, this world she'd been denied for so long.
Forty years in a cage. Forty years of dreaming about trees and streams and open sky. Now she had them, and she would never take them for granted.
Kael slowed, letting her catch up. "You okay back here?"
"Perfect." She smiled at him. "Just enjoying the view."
"Anything in particur?"
"Everything." She gestured at the forest around them. "Forty years without trees. Without streams. Without sunlight on my face." She looked at him. "Without people who care about me. I'm not going to waste a single moment of this."
He took her hand, squeezing gently. "You won't. None of us will."
---
They walked in comfortable silence for a while, the forest gradually giving way to rocky terrain.
The wolves appeared ahead, Fenris with them, his face bright with excitement.
"There's a pass," he called. "Narrow, but passable. The wolves say it leads to the valley."
Kael studied the terrain, nodding slowly. "This could be it. The sanctuary."
"Let's find out." Lilith moved forward, her wings catching the wind. "I'll scout from above. See what's waiting for us."
She unched herself into the air before anyone could argue, her powerful wings carrying her above the treeline. The wind caught her, lifted her, and for a moment, she was simply flying—not scouting, not watching for threats, just flying.
This was freedom. This was life. This was everything she'd dreamed of.
Below her, the pass opened into a valley of breathtaking beauty. Green meadows, sparkling streams, ancient trees, and at its heart, a perfect spot for a settlement. Protected on all sides by cliffs, with only one narrow entrance.
Home.
She soared back down, nding lightly beside Kael and Fenris.
"It's there." Her voice was breathless with wonder. "The valley. It's perfect."
Kael's face broke into a smile. "Then let's go home."
