182. On the Horizon (Book Four)

The Goblin Eradication Summit or GES as it was now dubbed was now beginning.

It took some time for everyone to gather, especially when previous tensions were considered.

But eventually, the strongest powers on the continent convened. Well, some of the strongest powers on the continent convened. It mainly consisted of Humans and Demi-Humans.

Not a single officially recognized member of the Monster Races made an appearance…though it wasn’t as if they were invited.

While Demi-Humans consisted of races like Elves or Dwarves, Monster Races were a whole other matter.

Goblins, Orcs, Ogres, Kobolds, Lizard folk, Dragon-Kin, and many more. For the most part, these are races that look nothing like humans.

Though most of them did not dwell on the current continent, there were still a few scattered about, with at least one of them being an officially recognized group, yet they weren’t invited to the meeting.

Anyway, Humans and Demi Humans alike were now seated in the largest conference room located in the Royal Palace of the Verdan Kingdom.

In the room was of course the King of Verdan. A monster in human flesh whose power rested firmly at the peak of the 8th Tier.

Next were the two individuals who would be representing the Demi-Human Lands.

The Lady of the Woods hailing from the Liasante Nation and joining her was The Alpha Huntress of the Wolf-kin Clans.

The latter, being an Elder Wolf-kin with pristine white hair and fur in certain places. Like her ears for example.

Then came Chancellor Gaius of the Blue Sky Federation. A large potbelly of a man who was the weakest leader in the room at just Tier Six, but his sworn guards were not to be outdone in power.

Next, instead of coming in person, the Queen of North Balarian sent the head of the Balarian Council in her stead. An older man simply known as Mr. Sai.

King Exor of the Touval Kingdom was present as well. He was large individual, that sported many scars across his face and body from years of battle.

Finally, there was Grand Marshall Demos.

The Head Warrior of the Martial Confederate. A small nation when compared to the others in the room, but a nation that was known for battle.

Every single soul in that nation was a warrior from birth.

From the baker to a random servant girl someone might find at a local inn.

  They were all trained warriors.

Grand Marshall Demos was the only one without a guard detail.

And there wasn’t a single soul present in the room who could confidently say they could defeat him in a fight to the death. Not the even the King of Verdan.

Currently there were five human powers being represented. The Martial Confederate, the Touval Kingdom, North Balarian, The Blue Sky Federation, and finally the hosts, the Verdan Kingdom.

Whilst the Demi-Human Lands were represented by the Liasante Nation and the Wolf-kin Clan.

There were other powers present on the continent, but some either were not invited or simply chose not to come. For one reason or another…

  Anyway, the meeting began.

“You all have been briefed on the situation before so I will skip over the reminders. Instead I would like to begin by discussing the plan going forward. We all know the consequences of allowing a Goblin King to grow.”

  “Wait.”

It was the voice of Chancellor Gaius who interrupted the King of Verdan.

“You sent three companies of your finest Knights to the Dark Lands of Mir, where they met their end at the hands of a Goblin King. This tell me you knew. Why wasn’t this news shared to the rest of us.”

The King of Verdan answered without missing a beat.

Although no one would dare question him so in most other situations, the people in this room had a bit more leeway in his eyes. As long as they didn’t push it.

“It was a recon mission. We received word of a powerful group of monsters, and a swift response was enacted. Unfortunately the proud Knights of Verdan met a bitter end. If it wasn’t for the noble actions of our very own Minister Franc, we would still be in the dark about the threat we face.

“Does that answer your question Chancellor.”

The Chancellor in question only snorted but offered no reply.

Everyone in the room knew that response was probably drafted up by one of the Ministers of Verdan. Their King was known for his power, not his eloquence.

But to call a King of a nation a liar would be grave offense, so the argument would be dropped.

  For now.

“Since we’re on the matter. 6000 Knights died. A number that included three Knight Commanders. We do not know their exact numbers, but it would be foolish to send a similar force.

“The Verdan Kingdom is willing commit an additional three Companies, that will be joined by a squad of the Verdan Shadow Division.”

The temperature of the room seemed to drop at the mention of the Verdan Shadow Division. One might think that the fact that they were known would be a detriment to the effectiveness of a group that predicated themselves on stealth, but all it did was drive fear into the hearts of those that heard it.

It was one thing to know of their existence, but it was something else altogether know they you were seen as enemy of Verdan…and that the shadows would come for you.

  There would be no quarter.

From there more discussion followed as each group discussed the forces they would be adding to Verdan’s own.

The Liasante Nation would be sending the Thorn Order. A collection of the finest archers the Liasante Nation could boast.

While the Wolf-kin Clan would supply a very squad of Black Wolves. A force very similar to the Verdan Kingdom’s shadows.

That would be all the support this force would be receiving from the Demi-Humans. Of course that led to some arguments, but the Demi-Human Lands were in no position to be supplying large collections of troops.

Moving on, the Blue Sky Federation would be responsible for supplying all necessary resources to feed and pay for a force of that size. If it was logistics related then they would be handling it.

The Touval Kingdom would be sending two of their own Knight Companies. While they weren’t 2000 strong like the standard in Verdan. They were all battle hardened warriors and would expect no less of a performance than that of the Knights of Verdan.

North Balarian would be sending a contingent of the their Balarian Riders. A cavalry force that claimed to be able to fight in any terrain. A claim that wasn’t disputed.

And finally…Grand Marshall Demos announced that he would be posting a War Notice in the Martial Confederate.

If one didn’t know how their nation worked, then they’d be remarkably confused. But everyone in the room knew that the Martial Confederate had no standing army nor did they force anyone to fight.

Though they had long since proved that they were a nation best left to their own devices, lest you face annihilation.

So no one in the room argued against the notice, in fact it was appreciated that they would do that.

All that was left was to plan a date of operation commencement, as the leaders of their respective nations would return home to get their troops organized.

  And that concluded the GES.

  War was on the horizon.
