Boss Encounter Failed. Attempts: 59.
For once, they didn’t scream. They just slumped in silence, dripping with defeat.
Finally, Harlada muttered, “I hate bronze.”
Leo tapped his quill against the bars. “We underestimated the mechanics.”
Bert groaned. “It’s one goblin!”
Leo straightened suddenly. His eyes gleamed behind soot-stained glasses. “Yes. One goblin. Which means predictable patterns. Repeatable sequences. Exploitable.”
Harlada narrowed her eyes. “Are you… suggesting strategy?”
“Yes.” Leo’s voice was iron. “This time we plan. This time we adapt. This time we win.”
Bert rubbed his chin, then nodded slowly. “Fine. But only if I get to stab it.” While he caressed his new cleaver.
“Deal,” Leo said. “But with its own weapon.”
“Before phase 2, preferably” Harlada reminded them.

They stepped back into the boss chamber. The goblin waited at the far end again, helmet crooked, chipped spear dragging sparks across the stone. It yawned.
The crystal screen pulsed:
Boss Encounter: Bronze Challenger. Attempts: 59.
Harlada exhaled, frost curling around her lips. “Okay. Stick to the plan. Distract, bait, stab. We can do this.”
Leo adjusted his grip on his notes, voice steady. “Phase one: provoke the ranged attack.”
Bert grinned. “Phase two: shove his stick where the sun don’t shine.”
The goblin stomped forward, spear scraping.
“Now!” Leo barked.
***
Harlada dashed left, gloves flashing. Frost bloomed across the floor in jagged sheets, forcing the goblin to slow its advance. She clapped her hands, sparks flaring in its face. “Over here, ugly!”
The goblin grunted, eyes narrowing. It raised its spear, muscles bulging.
Leo shot filaments of crimson webbing, weaving them into a makeshift funnel. The goblin’s path narrowed, its stance shifting, its weapon cocked back.
Bert stood in the center of the funnel, arms spread wide. “Come on, you little green punk! Throw it! Right here!”
The goblin snarled and hurled the spear.
It cut the air with a deadly hiss, whistling straight for Bert’s chest.
At the last moment, he dove aside.
Dodge successful.
The spear slammed into the stone wall, quivering in place.
If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
“NOW!” Leo shouted.
***
All three rushed at once.
Harlada froze the ground beneath the goblin’s feet, locking it in place for a precious second. Leo fired webs to bind its arms, straining against the monster’s muscles.
And Bert ripped the embedded spear from the wall with a roar.
“EAT THIS!” he bellowed, driving the weapon straight through the goblin’s chest.
The goblin’s eyes went wide. It staggered, growled, then collapsed with a ground-shaking thud.
The spear dissolved into light, followed by the goblin’s entire body, which burst into shimmering fragments before fading to dust.
The arena fell silent.

For the first time in the dungeon, the three adventurers looked at each other and smiled.
“See?” Leo said, voice smug. “Strategy works.”
“Fine,” Bert grumbled. “This time.”
Harlada clapped him on the back. “Good job, big guy. Even if you almost died again.”
Bert grinned. “Almost dying is part of the plan.”

The crystal screen pulsed, words glowing bright:
Boss Defeated. Attempts: 59. Rank: Bronze (Barely).
Reward: Progression Granted.
A warm chime filled the chamber. A glow spread across their bodies, tingling through every vein.
The crystal screen shimmered, triumphant text blazing across the chamber:
Level Up! Stat Growth Allocated.
- Warrior Leo Vince: +1 Strength
- Rogue Bouldering Bert: +1 Dexterity
- Mage Harlada Houdini: +1 Intelligence
They froze.
“…What,” Leo said flatly. “Why strength? I am a strategist. I require intelligence. Strength is a waste.”
Bert puffed out his chest. “Hold up. Dexterity? I don’t even know what that is. I don’t sneak, I smash. This is useless!”
Harlada folded her arms smugly. “Actually, this works for me. Intelligence belongs with the mage. Obviously.” She snapped her fingers and immediately fizzled out a spark. “…Mostly.”
Leo rounded on her. “You stole my stat.”
“Excuse me?” she shot back. “You stole Bert’s strength!”
“I didn’t choose strength!” Leo snapped. “I was cursed with it!”
Bert scowled. “Yeah, well, I was cursed with… dex… dex-whatever. I can’t even spell it!”
The crystal pulsed again, letters scrolling in a distinctly mocking font:
Clarification: Class progression. Optimal distribution guaranteed.
Translation: You three are idiots.
They stared up at it, jaws slack.
“…Did the dungeon just insult us?” Harlada whispered.
Leo’s hands shook. “Unacceptable. This system lacks statistical integrity.”
Bert squinted. “Pretty sure it called us stupid.”
The screen flashed brightly:
Confirmation: Yes.
“OH, COME ON!” they shouted in unison.
The lava burbled happily, as if laughing with the dungeon.
***
The far wall rumbled, stone splitting. Three new doors rose from the arena floor, each gleaming faintly. Their symbols pulsed with golden light, identical in shape and size.
The crystal screen flickered one last time:
Choose Wisely. New Path Unlocked.
They stared in silence.
“…They all look the same,” Harlada whispered.
Leo adjusted his glasses. “Statistically, that is… deeply unfair.”
Bert hefted his cleaver and snorted. “I pick all three.”
The doors pulsed, waiting.
