“Your back just in time Tanner, everybody has already gone in. So it is your turn.”

“Thanks, I told the dean, she said she would be here soon to look things over.” As Tanner reaches to touch the pillar, he says, “See you later Katie, thanks for everything.” and vanishes with another purple flash of aura.

Tanner looks around the small hill he finds himself on. ‘Your first wave starts in 30 seconds Good Luck.’ “Wave dungeon, got it.” Tanner says out loud. After insuring his armor and weapons are ready, Tanner sets his feet in a ready stance. Prepared as he can be for the battle to come.

A lone goblin breaks free from the forest surrounding his hill, Tanner holds his position, watching the creature’s movement.

‘Let them come to me, save my self for combat. No telling how long this could last.’

The near sighted monster finally spots Tanner on top of the small hill, and charges only to be cut down quickly.

“First wave in progress level one first challenge complete, one minute until second challenge. do you wish to leave. YES / NO.”

Tanner selects NO with a resigned sigh, ‘This is going to be a long run.’ Over the next several minutes Tanner fights up to ten Level one goblin opponents. With a one minute wait between challenge. Then messages arrive showing a ten minute wait between waves. Wave two brings the expected Level two opponents.

As the last Level Five goblin falls, the system announces a 30 minute recovery, Tanner slumps to the ground exhausted, then mediates to recover.

“Evaluation complete challenge shifted to better match contestant. warning you may only leave after each combat round.”

The new opponents break from the tree line screaming war cries. Two Level Ten hobgoblins rush to the top of the hill, Tanner casts Arcane Missiles at the trailing hobgoblin, knocking it back down the hill, badly injured. He steps into the first monster’s swing. His right sword blocking the swing while he attacks the body with his left. He pivots with the movement, allowing the hobgoblin to pass, then casts Arcane Missiles into the dungeon creature’s back, killing it. He spins back to the second hobgoblin just in time to cast Arcane Missiles, hitting it again and knocking it back down the grade, this time the creature is dead.

Tanner immediately mediates, pushing his recovery as far as possible. The next few fights go similarly, except the creatures spawn farther apart, and he finds himself reliant on Arcane Explosions to keep the opponents manageable.

A large orc steps out of the tree line. Then stands upright, he gazes at Tanner with the confidence of a seasoned veteran with hundreds of fights behind him. As the seven foot tall orc strides to him, Tanner pulls himself straight, his five foot ten inch frame short in comparison, his 190 lbs looking anemic to the broad muscular frame of his opponent.

‘Goddess it is Mick in orc form!’ He thinks to himself. Then sets into a ready stance, swords flashing in each hand. The orc stops a few feet from him and gives a nod of approval, drawing his weapon from its scabbard then throwing the sheath to the side. The orc’s gleaming two-handed sword almost as long as Tanner is tall.

The orc swings his sword and sends a Wind Blade swooping at Tanner. Tanner dodges to the side, sending Arcane Missiles in reply. He follows behind his attack, closing the distance between him and the monstrous orc to get inside his reach. Tanner slashes at the orc’s arms and legs producing cuts on the inside of its forearms and thighs. The orc lets go of his sword with one hand, jabbing his fist forward and blocking Tanner with the sword blade, point downward at the ground. The sword’s edge hits Tanner as he dodges the jab. Tanner then steps around the sword to the outside, thrusting his sword into the orc’s rib cage. He continues his spin around the orc, thrusting his other sword into the broad back of his opponent. The orc jumps forward and turns, facing Tanner, the monster’s sword flashes as he swings in a figure-eight pattern jumping to the attack. Tanner rolls backward casting Arcane Explosion, followed by Arcane Missiles, sending the orc backwards staggering. Tanner follows casting Arcane Missiles, targeting the orc’s head and chest, then hitting the legs. As the orc stumbles, disorientated, Tanner leaps onto the creature’s back, stabbing with both swords riding the massive orc to the ground, he then cast Arcane Missiles point blank to the back of the orc’s head killing it.

Tanner rolls off the orc, gasping for breath, and lies on his back the notifications flash across his vision. As he recovers and takes stock of his injuries, he wonders how the others have fared in their tests. He climbs wearily to his feet, claims the reward chest then exits the portal.

Tanner steps into chaos. Imperial body guards on high alert, instructors walking the surround portal yard casting spells and shouting at each other. Katie and the dean standing off to the side and out of the way. The rest of Legacy are out of the dungeon’s depths, standing back from the collapse of Mick falling from his knees face down to the ground, his armor and clothes in tatters, holes showing burned skin and muscle tissue. The stench of acid wafting off of him. Connie, Iris and the academy healers rush to the downed man. Dean Liafinor stands to the side with a shocked look, watching the healers work on her young student. She gathers her wits and call off Connie and Iris, explaining it will be better to let the more experienced healers deal with the injuries. Tanner pushes through everyone to Claire and Connie’s sides, attempting to make sense of the disorganization. Tanner catches the dean’s attention as the healers lift Mick off the ground and carry him to the menders’ ward. The dean nods toward the departing healers, Tanner nods back, motioning the rest of Legacy to follow her.
