Looking at these tools, Tribe leader Kivrah's thoughts run through different scenarios. He thinks about how they can use this new tool that they discovered. A faint warm feeling ran through his chest, and deep down, a tiny spark of ideas emerged.
‘There might be. A chance!’ Kivrah is leaning on this sliver of opportunity.
He looked to Shaman Mashu to see her reaction and opinion. But the Shaman anticipated his reaction and immediately nodded to him.
“We can talk about it my son, however-” Kivrah sternly looked at Civ.
“Do you understand what you are saying?” Intently staring at Civ, Kivrah waits for his son to react in an unusual way.
“Yes, Tribe leader. I want to hunt that boar!” Civ’s gaze on his Father remains steady, awaiting his command.
Noticing his son does not have any doubt in himself, Kivrah straightens his back.
“I will allow you, but you need to show me a plan.” Kivrah looked at Horm and Arsh.
“Horm and Arsh, do you also want to hunt the boar?”
“Yes Tribe leader! We want to fight that boar!” Horm and Arsh promptly respond.
Their eyes were full of determination and courage! Even if he stops these younglings, they will find a way.
“Since all of you were already determined to do this. Talk to each other and let me know your plan before the night comes,” Kivrah commanded them.
The dusk is already coming for about an hour or two, based on Civ’s calculation.
“But tribe leader-” Horm wants to say something.
“I do not want any excuses, tell me your plan before the night comes, or you cannot leave this camp until the Tuanir!”. Kivrah answered them with overwhelming authority.
Seeing the reaction from the tribe leader, everyone held their thought. They let the Tribe leader leave. Bringing the atlatl and stone spear back to the Shaman’s hut.
“Shaman Mashu, do you think this tool can kill a boar?” Kivrah seriously asked the Shaman while walking back to the Hut.
The Shaman looked at the sky and said, “Lately, I’m having dreams. Almost every day.”
Kivrah stopped in his tracks and looked at the Shaman with a disturbed feeling.
“I had a dream recently, and it was a boar running in the trees. It was big. It was aggressive. Our tribesmen tried to run from it. However, the boar was faster and trampled them. But after running amok, the boar was hit by sunlight and died.” Shaman Mashu's face is visibly sweating like a rain droplet.
Hearing this, Kivrah could not help but look again at the atlatl and recall the dream of Shaman Mashu.
“Tribe leader, maybe there are things that we need to see their end to know what it really is.” Shaman Mashu solemnly bowed and continued to walk, and the Tribe Leader followed.
=========================================
After the Shaman and Tribe leader leave, the trio goes silent.
A few moments later, Civ breaks the ice.
“Now that you see how this works, you all agree we can hunt it, right?”. Both Horm and Arsh nodded, but right now, there is a sense of doubt.
Civ noticed their reaction was different when they answered the Tribe leader.
“What happened guys?” Civ wants to know the root cause.
“You see Civ, I don’t think we can come up with a plan right now to hunt a boar.” Arsh honestly replied.
“Hmmmm, I don’t think so.” Civ countered.
“Why so?”
“Well as long as we can hit the boar, we can have a chance!”
Arsh already had enough of Civ’s enthusiasm.
“But do you have a plan?”
“Yes, actually I already did it when we were gathering the berries in the north.”
Civ explained to them his plan, and the two of them were shocked and could not comprehend Civ’s bravery.
If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
“It is too dangerous Civ! I do not think the Tribe leader will allow you to do it.” Horm objected.
“What are other options? Do you have a plan?” Civ asked them.
Neither of them answered Civ’s question. Instead, they just looked at each other. Then they looked back at Civ in silence.
Civ sighed deeply. The plan is really quite dangerous. Knowing the chances, they need to make sure they can execute it properly.
Seeing no objections from the two, Civ considered it an agreement from them.
“Now that the sun is going to set. We need to go back to the Shaman to discuss it,” Horm and Arsh nodded. Then they tidied up the place and we went back to the camp.
Arriving at the hut, the Shaman had just finished her prayer. The Tribe leader on the other hand, was holding his stone knife. He was trying to cut all different kinds of items, such as stone, wood, bark, and leaves.
After the greeting, Civ immediately laid out the plan they had discussed. He had gotten the same reaction from the Shaman and his Father, but it was not as exaggerated as his friends.
Kivrah does not respond right away. Instead, he looks down while touching his chin. Civ's palm is getting sweaty. If his father does not like the plan, they will be grounded until the Tuanir, which will hinder most of his plans.
“Please go with your plans,” Kivrah replied with a slight worry on his face.
“Do not worr- What father?” Civ blurted out and stared blankly at his Father.
“I said, I allow you to hunt the boar.” Kivrah reiterated himself.
Civ was surprised by his father’s reply. The plan is really dangerous. He was going to justify it in front of the Shaman and the Tribe leader. But he did not expect that his Father would not ask more questions.
“Thank you! Father, we will not disappoint you!” Civ replied and was excited for tomorrow.
Kivrah nodded and reminded them. “But make sure all of you can make it out safe. Immediately go back here when you encounter danger.”
The three of them bowed and left the hut right after.
For Kivrah, the plan is dangerous but not as dangerous if his son could execute it. After recalling the dream Shaman Mashu mentioned, he will honestly allow Civ. As long as it does not hurt or sacrifice anyone. But with that plan, he doesn’t think they can escape safely.
He looked at the sky where the sun was already setting and prayed. “Oh Sun Goddess, grace us with your protection.”
With dwindling harvest from the south, east, and west sides of the camp, their only chance is to go north.
“I really hope they can succeed.”
The next morning, the trio prepared early for the necessary tools needed to hunt the boar.
Horm was responsible for bringing the spears. Arsh and Civ were busy discussing the plan and attaching the rest of the spearhead in the sticks. Totaling 15 spears that they bring.
Once everything was prepared, they stopped by the Shaman's hut. Shaman Mashu and Tribe leader Kivrah were already waiting for them. They noticed that she was holding something that was wrapped in the leaves.
Kivrah looks at the trio. He takes a deep breath and straightens his back.
“Before I let you go north, I want you to listen to the dream of the Shaman a day ago.” Kivrah signaled Shaman Mashu. She retells the dream she had about the boar dying from the sunlight.
Hearing this, Civ's brows furled while the other two were contemplating it.
Before they ask something, Tribe leader Kivrah has already started speaking.
“Civ, Horm, Arsh. May the Sun Goddess protect you in this hunt and you all come back to the camp safely.”
When Kivrah finished his blessing, Shaman Mashu reached into the bowl-like leaves. Then sprinkled them with brown powder, and said. “May the sunlight of the Sun Goddess guide and protect you.”
Inhaling it makes them irritated in the throat.
Cough
Cough
But after a moment, Civ smelled something. A fresh, woody, a little bit of sweetness.
‘This smells like pine trees!’. Civ was overjoyed in his heart.
Other than safe distance hunting, hiding their own scent is crucial in hunting. He did not expect that this was something that the Shaman had. With this, their probability of executing this without any injuries or casualties increases.
Finishing the blessing from the Shaman, the trio bid their farewell. Kivrah noticed that Civ’s mood was lighter after they were blessed by the Shaman.
“Now it's up to them Shaman.” Kivrah does not leave his gaze on the trio until they cannot see them.
“It is really up to them. I hope that powder scent reaches Sun Goddess.” Shaman Mashu smiled and bowed, looking forward to good news from the trio.
On their way to leaving the camp, their tribesmen were already aware of the plan for hunting. There were murmurs of doubt Civ is hearing but he ignores them.
His original plan was actually to ask their tribesmen for help. But after the people heard the news about boars chasing them in the north, they stopped going there. Knowing this, the fear in his tribesmen's hearts is too much. Asking them to help him in this hunt will make things worse.
‘I will remove that fear and doubt in their hearts!’ Civ promised himself.
Arriving at the log as their planned location, Civ's heart sank.
The sky went dark!
‘Oh no, we need to do this quickly.’ Civ is determined, but time is crucial right now.
“Horm and Arsh, are you ready?” Civ asks his friends.
“Yes!” Both of them answered at the same time. Both of them answered promptly as they also noticed the urgency of the situation.
Civ nods and walks to the place where the boars are grazing. When he arrived, he saw that only two sows were there together with their offspring.
‘The other one might look for a greener pasture.’
Civ saw the boars were already near his location, about 30 yards (27 meters). He picked up one of the stones on the ground. Then he threw it to one of the sows.
Hitting the boar alerted it, and Civ intentionally ran away. The boar heard stomps and started chasing the sound.
“REEEEEE!!!” Based on the scream, it looks like the boar was beyond pissed!
As Civ ran away, a wide grin appeared on his lips.
‘The Days of annoyance have been paid off!’
He continued to follow the path until he saw his friends. He sprinted diagonally to the right away from them.
“Ready!” Civ shouted, and based on his calculations, this is around 50 yards away from them.
He instantaneously stopped, changed his direction to the left, and sprinted straight.
“Ready to throw!” Civ reminded his friend.
When they saw the angry boar.
THUUN THUN
The boar was hit. But on its shoulder blade.
“REEEEEEE!!!” The boar gets angrier and faster as it chases Civ.
While running, Civ felt a faint drizzle from the sky.
“Not good.” Civ also noticed the agitation of the boar from the back. He ran to the left, away from his friend, as he planned to do a lap.
He ran in circles, and when he was in the kill zone, he shouted. “Again!”
They tried again to shoot, but both of the spears missed. After three laps, they are short on spears now.
On the fourth attempt.
THUN
THUN
One of the spears penetrated the back of the boar.
“REEEEEEE!!!” The boar definitely felt it and recklessly chased Civ this time.
After two laps, Arsh and Horm were able to hit two more on the boar’s back and lower neck!
Now the boar is bleeding and has slowly stopped. Then instantly fell down!
“Look at that Arsh! We killed it!”
“Yeah! Take that boar!”
Horm and Arsh screamed as they started running to Civ.
Arsh sees Civ's hands on its knees.
Now the heavily exhausted Civ is catching his breath. Looking at the boar that is lying down in front of him.
The rain also slowly starts.
“For safety purposes.” He slowly walked towards it and pulled out his stone knife.
“Hey Civ! Wait for us.” Horm calls the attention of Civ, who is fixated on walking towards the boar.
As Civ slowly walks, he holds his breath. ‘This is my first hunt.’
He cannot wait to grab their first hunt, but suddenly.
“REEEEEE!!!!”
