Chapter 28 - After the first defense

When the hunting team heard the command. They immediately climbed to their designated areas.

Half of the stone knapping team brought the spears they created to the defenders.

Horm was tasked to defend east, Arsh on south, and Civ and north. Each side will be defended by 3 people. So Kivrah decided to assign the hunting team and some of the firewood team to defend the wall.

Safi, who was tasked to defend the west section of the camp. Tried her best to shout and call the attention of everyone.

“They are near now!” Safi alerted everyone.

Civ, Yan, and Pil held their breath. Waiting for someone to appear. A couple of seconds later.

“Help!” Luk shouted as they ran their very best back to the camp. Ras was behind Luk, trying not to get behind.

“Run to the empty space in the middle! We will get you!” Civ looked back at Vel.

“Vel, give me the extra ladder I requested!” Civ wanted to have that extra ladder as a spare if there is a ladder breaks. But he did not expect that it would be used right away.

Vel quickly brought the ladder that he had just finished and gave it to Civ. Vel felt what Civ would do, and he helped him raise the ladder above the wall. Then he leaned it against the wall outside. Give a way to climb the wall to Luk and Ras.

“Climb here!” Civ pointed to the ladder, and the two tried their best to get there.

Civ and the rest were also focused on seeing what was behind Luk and Ras.

It was three adult boars. From Civ’s estimate, it has the same size as the biggest boar they hunted.

The boars followed Luk and Ras on the field, but these boars did not follow the path of the two. Instead, they ran to the scattered pile of leaves Civ and the team had prepared.

These boars were black and hairy. Their eyes were visibly red, and their mouths were foaming.

  REEEEEEE

This sound made everyone inside the camp, aside from the hunting team and Kivrah, tremble.

“Oh, Goddess of Warmth and sunshine. Please protect us.” The women and elderly prayed as they heard the sound coming from the north.

These boars noticed that the pile was only a pile of leaves, and they rushed to reach the two meals they wanted to eat.

Luk and Ras slowed down to the gap.

Seeing this, one of the boars tried to leap towards Ras, who was panting already. But instead of reaching the human, it felt pain in its stomach.

  SHHHRRRIIIEEEKK

The boar was impaled on one of the barricades they had placed.

Luk and Ras did not bother to look back, and they were able to grab the ladder and climb up it. But instead of grabbing Civ’s hands, both of them jump and egg roll to the ground. They lay there catching their breath.

“Father, please check them.” Civ looked back at what was happening outside the wall.

The boar that was impaled tried to wiggle, trying its best to escape after being impaled. The other two boars stopped in their tracks and looked at the impaled.

“Throw!” Civ commanded. He and the other two threw a spear using their atlatls.

  TSHHUKKK

  TSHHUKKK

All of their spear hit the target. Instantly killing the boar. The other two boars want to get near their dead companion.

All three spears miss the target by an inch.

Looking at the spears, the two boars did not continue their advance. The two of them retreated and left the camp.

The silence filled the north camp. Civ looked at Safi and nodded to him.

Civ shouted. “The boars left. Hunting team, retrieve the boar.”

Hearing the command, they quickly exited from the west side and went to the north side of the camp. Kivrah climbed the ladder to oversee the surroundings. While the team retrieved their hunt.

Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author's consent. Report any sightings.

Civ commanded Phil and Kas also to overlook their surroundings on the ground.

Seeing the boar up in person, it was bigger than they thought. But they did not waste any time being fascinated by what was in front of them.

Horm and Lowi were tasked to pick up the boar. With the strength of Horm, they were able to lift the if. He put it on his shoulder, and they started walking back to the camp. Civ and the rest hide the exposed barricades with leaves. They also put some other stuff before returning to camp.

When the boar was placed in the middle of the camp, that was the time the tribe cheered.

Everyone hugged and praised the Sun Goddess. This should be enough for two days if they ration it properly.

Kivrah commanded some from their tribe that did not learned butchering yet. Not only to learn this skill, but healso wants everyone will know this until their fear of boars disappears.

Some of the newbies in butchering volunteered. They were guided by the tribe leader himself.

The atmosphere was a bit better now. Civ looked at the two exhausted people who were looking for these boars.

But before he went to them. Civ instructed Vel to make more barricades and pointed wood. If Vel wants, he can ask Arsh or someone from her team to help him make these.

Vel happily agrees and gets back to work.

Civ continued his walk towards the two. They were leaning against the wall and still trying to catch their breath.

“Ras, Luk. How are both of you?” Civ sat in front of them. He checks if there are any injuries that might not have been noticed. So far, nothing so. Civ heaves a sigh of relief.

“We are good. Just exhausted from running.” Ras answered while trying to calm himself.

Luk answered Civ with a nod.

It might be discourteous, but Civ wants to know what's ahead.

“Ras, tell me. What happened in the north?” Civ fixed his focus on Ras. Clenching his fist.

“He-here is what we s-saw and ha-happened.” Ras tried his best to speak properly.

When they arrived in the north. They were confused and shocked. The place where the boars were spotted last time was empty. Luk wants to go further to make sure they saw it. But before they plan what to do next, boars appeared in different locations.

Fortunately, they were quick to react and knew what direction they would go. By the Luk’s lead, they outmaneuvered the boars that were chasing them.

“Bu-but Civ, I have a feeling that they are not the only boars around.” Luk was able to catch his breath and jump into the conversation.

Civ nodded. What they saw last time was multiple boars. Male boars were grazing.

“Alright, please reserve your energy and be ready anytime.” Civ left the two and went to his Father.

Civ noticed that the butchering was already finished. He called the attention of his Father.

“Father, can I talk to you?” Civ looked at his Father with a serious face.

When Kivrah noticed the expression on his son. They walked away from the crowd to the west.

“Father, I think we still need to be alert.” Civ looked at the fence they had placed.

“That is what I anticipate also. The boars that attacked us earlier were not many. The other boar that was not injured also left.” Kivrah touched his chin.

“Going back to the north is not good right now. I suggest having someone look above the wall in the meantime. We will have separate groups for the morning and afternoon.” Civ looked at his Father, waiting for his opinion.

Kivrah looked back at his son. “I agree with you. Let’s do that.”

As they have agreed on a solution, Kivrah gives this task back to the hunting team. The hunting team gladly accepts the given task. Pil, Kes, Yan, and Safi were the lookouts for the rest of the day.

The tribe decided to remove the huts in the middle of the camp and move the campfire there. For them, it will be warm for everyone, and it is away from the wall. The rest of the day was lively as they enjoyed the feast.

As the tribe was busy celebrating. Civ walks back to the first campfire that was placed in front of the cave.

“Now that everything is set. Time to check my creation.”

Civ digs in the pile of ashes and there. The upside-down jar that he left to cool down overnight. He dusted the ashes and flicked the jar.

  CLINGK

  CLINGK

A dull bell-like sound leaves the jar. Civ inspected the jar and smiled.

“Hehehe the experiment was a success. If I let the other two fire overnight, it should produce the same result.”

Satisfied. Civ lit the fire here and does the same for the other two.

“Now, to the final test.” Civ stood up and brought the jar. He continued to walk west. At the fence, he told Safi that he would go to the river. Safi noticed that Civ is holding something, but she did not ask him since Civ is in a hurry.

At the river, the first thing he did was to test his creation.

“Let's see how you will hold.”

Civ submerge the jar and lift it up.

“No leaks!” Civ was happy that his jar worked this time around. With this, he can start teaching it also to the team and have them figure out the other things.

“I hope Father and my tribemen like this.” Civ placed the jar with water at the top of the big stone.

After that, Civ takes his time to take a bath and think about his next steps.

Right now, they do not know how many boars and how long they need to stay at the camp. But the safest location right now is the western area. He thinks this is the best place to get some wood and firewood.

With the plan for now, Civ will ask his Father’s opinion later. While his mind was wandering, Civ thought of something.

The river in front of him was quite big and deep in the middle. Crossing this part is not advisable since the current in the middle is strong. Trees on the other side of the river were big, and it was a good source of firewood.

However, while staring at the other side of the river, he felt that someone was staring at him. On the other side of the river, deep in the forest, Civ saw a silhouette. He tried to look into the deep forest. His eyesight blurred, so he scratched it. But when his vision came back, the silhouette was gone.

‘Am I dreaming?’ Civ pinched his cheek, but he felt pain.

‘Ouch, might be my imagination.’ Civ picks up the jar and goes back to the camp.

When he arrived, everyone noticed that he his holding something above his shoulder.

“Son what is - oh!” Kivrah looked at the brown thing Civ placed. Inside, it was water!

“A thing that holds water!” The crowd starts gathering around the jar. Amazed by the ability of this jar to hold water.

Everyone has the same idea. If this can hold a water this much water. They do not need to leave the camp too often to drink! With the danger of the horde and having a supply of food. They can invest more effort in the tasks they have.

“This is amazing Son! What do you think we call this?” Kivrah asked.

“This, hmmm, let's call it a jar!” Civ happily named it.

The crowd cheered as they had a way to store water right now. But before they can cheer and discuss.

“BOAR! MANY!” A shout from Pil, who is watching the north side, catches their attention.

Civ and Kivrah rushed and climbed to the other vacant ladders on the wall.

What they saw were boars. A group of big boars!
