*Chapter 28: Fragments of Trust**
#### **Part I: The Silence After the Storm**
The castle library looked like a battlefield. Books were scattered on the floor, shelves were broken, and shattered windows let in the cold pre-dawn wind. In the center of the destruction, Gotier and Yuzuki stood on opposite sides, their auras still pulsing faintly, like the embers of a fire that refused to die completely. Nina was leaning against the wall, with dried tears on her face, looking alternately at the two men she had considered allies. Akari held Zeke's arm, her eyes red from crying. The silence was deafening.
"So that's it?" Nina finally said, her voice cutting through the air like a blade. "Are you two just going to stand there staring at each other while Neversand prepares to be attacked?"
Yuzuki wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, his single arm trembling slightly. The absence of his left arm seemed more pronounced now, as if the fight had reopened wounds that went beyond the physical.
"Nina is right," he said, his voice hoarse. "It doesn't matter what happened here. Taida is coming."
Gotier still radiated a residual electrical energy, Don'yoku whispering words in his mind that he struggled to ignore.
"You think you can just pretend nothing happened? That you can go back to giving orders as if you were our leader?"
"I never said I was your leader," Yuzuki retorted. "But someone has to make decisions. And you just proved that you can't be that person."
The tension grew again, but before it could explode once more, Zeke stepped forward.
"ENOUGH!" he shouted, his voice echoing through the destroyed library. "You are both pathetic!"
Everyone turned to look at Zeke, surprised by the normally controlled swordsman's outburst.
"My entire clan was massacred," Zeke continued, his voice trembling with emotion. "Five hundred people died to give me a chance to live. And you two are here fighting like children because you can't agree on methods?"
He pointed to the broken window, where the golden light of the golden tree still shone faintly.
"Out there, there are people counting on us. People who believe we can protect them. And you want to throw it all away because of pride?"
Akari nodded, finding her own voice.
"Zeke is right. Master, I... I understand your choices. But Gotier isn't wrong to question the methods either."
Yuzuki looked at his disciple, seeing the pain in her eyes.
"Akari..."
"No," she interrupted. "Let me speak. You taught me that strength without purpose is destruction. But purpose without compassion... is also destruction."
Gotier felt Don'yoku retreat slightly in his mind, the wisdom of Akari's words penetrating through his anger.
"The girl is right," he murmured, his golden aura finally dissipating completely. "We both... lost focus."
Amok materialized beside Yuzuki, his form less threatening than before.
— *Yuzuki, maybe it's time to listen.*
"I always listen," Yuzuki said, but his voice lacked conviction.
"No," Nina said, pushing herself away from the wall. "You hear, but you don't listen. There's a difference."
#### **Part II: Patient Observers**
In the tavern in the Low Quarter, Minamino watched the smoke still rising from the castle through the fogged window. Dare was sitting in a reinforced chair, his imposing body making the furniture look fragile.
"They've stopped fighting," Dare observed, his deep voice echoing in the small room.
"For now," Minamino replied, his silver eyes shining. "But the damage is already done. The trust between them is broken."
"Should we attack now? While they are weak?"
Minamino shook his head.
"Patience, Dare. Let them weaken themselves further. Besides, there are other pieces in motion."
He gestured to a hooded man in the corner of the tavern—one of the informants they had planted in the city.
"Skull has been sighted less than a day away," the informant said in a low voice. "Taida is coming with full force."
"Interesting," Minamino murmured. "So we will have a three-front battle. Us, Skull, and the divided defenders of Neversand."
"This complicates things," Dare said.
"On the contrary," Minamino smiled. "It simplifies them. Let Taida and Yuzuki destroy each other. We'll pick up the survivors."
Dare nodded, but there was something in his expression that suggested discomfort with the strategy.
"Does something bother you?" Minamino asked.
"It's just..." Dare hesitated. "They fought among themselves, but there's still something in them. A strength we shouldn't underestimate."
"You're right," Minamino agreed. "That's why we're going to test that strength before acting decisively."
#### **Part III: Fragile Reconnections**
In the training field behind the castle, Soken and Kaien landed silently. The Tailax could feel the residual tension in the air, the echoes of the battle between Gotier and Yuzuki still vibrating through its draconic connection.
— *They hurt each other* — Soken said, his voice full of sadness. — *Not just physically.*
— *Yes* — Kaien agreed. — *The harmony of the group has been broken. This makes them vulnerable.*
Soken closed his eyes, extending his senses through his connection with the Dragon Clan.
— *There are other presences in the city. Two very powerful ones, hidden in the Low Quarter.*
— *The agents of Kugutsu Island* — Kaien murmured. — *They are waiting for the right moment.*
— *And Taida?*
— *Closer than we'd like. Perhaps tomorrow at dusk.*
Soken opened his eyes, determination shining in them.
"Then we don't have time for them to resolve their differences naturally."
— *What are you thinking?*
"That maybe it's time to show them what really matters," Soken said, an idea forming in his mind.
#### **Part IV: Nina's Proposal**
Back in the library, the group was still in a tense silence when Nina stepped forward.
"I have a proposal," she said, her voice firm despite the dried tears on her face.
Everyone turned to look at her.
"You two," she pointed to Gotier and Yuzuki, "will work together for the next 24 hours. Not as allies, not as friends, but as professionals with a common goal."
"Nina..." Yuzuki began.
"Don't interrupt me," she said, firmly. "Gotier, you will help Yuzuki prepare the city's defenses. Yuzuki, you will listen to Gotier's concerns about your methods."
"And if we can't work together?" Gotier asked.
"Then Neversand falls," Nina said, simply. "And all the people you both claim to want to protect die. Including Aygon's daughter you're arguing about."
The silence that followed was heavy.
"She's right," Akari said finally. "We can't afford to be divided now."
Zeke nodded.
"My clan died because we couldn't unite against a common threat. I won't let that happen again."
The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.
Yuzuki looked at Gotier, then at the others.
"Very well. 24 hours."
Gotier hesitated, Don'yoku whispering objections in his mind, but finally nodded.
"24 hours."
#### **Part V: Dark Preparations**
While the group tried to rebuild their fragmented unity, Minamino and Dare prepared for their own mission.
"It's time to test their defenses," Minamino said, rising from the tavern table. "Nothing too dramatic. Just... a demonstration."
"What do you have in mind?" Dare asked.
"You will attack the Low Quarter. Nothing lethal, just enough to force them to respond. I want to see how they work together after the... argument."
Dare frowned.
"And if they are more united than we think?"
"Then we will learn something valuable about our opponents," Minamino smiled. "And if they are divided... well, that will also be useful."
Minamino headed for the door, but stopped.
"Remember, Dare. Don't kill anyone yet. We want them to be alive to face Taida."
"Understood," Dare said, but there was reluctance in his voice.
After Minamino left, Dare remained alone in the tavern, looking at his massive hands. He had come to Neversand to complete a mission, but the more he observed the city's defenders, the more he questioned if they were doing the right thing.
"Orders are orders," he muttered to himself, but the words sounded empty.
#### **Part VI: Signs of a Storm**
In the castle, the group had split up to begin preparations. Yuzuki and Gotier worked in a tense silence, mapping the city's defenses, while Akari and Zeke organized supplies.
"The northern walls are our weakest point," Gotier said, pointing to the map. "If Taida comes through there..."
"He won't come through the walls," Yuzuki interrupted. "He'll come through the center. Taida has always been theatrical."
"How can you be sure?"
"Because I know him," Yuzuki said, his voice filled with dark memories. "He wants to be seen. He wants everyone to know he's back."
Gotier studied Yuzuki's face.
"There's history between you."
"There's history between him and everyone on Kugutsu Island," Yuzuki said. "Taida is not just a traitor. He is a symbol of what happens when power corrupts completely."
Before Gotier could reply, Soken burst through the door.
"There's movement in the Low Quarter," he said, panting. "Kaien has detected a presence moving toward the civilians."
Yuzuki and Gotier exchanged glances, the argument momentarily forgotten.
"One of the presences you detected before?" Yuzuki asked.
"Yes. The larger one. And it's no longer trying to hide."
#### **Part VII: The Test Begins**
In the Low Quarter, Dare walked through the narrow streets, his imposing presence making the civilians instinctively move away. He wasn't attacking—yet—but his mere presence was threatening enough.
"Where are your protectors now?" he muttered, watching people hide in their homes.
He stopped in a small square, where a broken fountain served as a meeting point for the residents. With a casual movement, he placed his hand on the fountain's stone.
"Overload," he said, softly.
The fountain, made of iron and stone, began to dissolve, the metal being absorbed into Dare's body. His skin took on a metallic sheen, and his strength visibly increased. The sound of destruction echoed through the streets, a clear call to whoever was listening.
"Come," he said to the wind. "Show me what you are capable of."
#### **Part VIII: Divided Response**
In the castle, the sound of destruction arrived as a distant echo, but Soken caught it immediately.
"They've started," he said.
Yuzuki stood up, his hand instinctively going to his sword.
"Gotier..."
"I know," Gotier said, Don'yoku already whispering about battle and power in his mind. "Let's go."
"Together?" Yuzuki asked, a question filled with meaning.
Gotier hesitated for a moment, then nodded.
"Together."
Akari and Zeke joined them, and the group headed for the door. But before they left, Nina stopped them.
"Remember," she said, "you are not just warriors. You are protectors. There's a difference."
Yuzuki nodded, but in his mind, Mao was already laughing.
— **Protector? You are a monster, Yuzuki. And monsters do what they do best... destroy.**
"Not today," Yuzuki muttered, but his voice lacked conviction.
#### **Part IX: The First Encounter**
When the group arrived in the Low Quarter, they found Dare standing in the center of the destroyed square, his skin glowing with a metallic luster. Around him, the debris of the fountain was scattered like scars on the stone.
"So," Dare said, his voice echoing through the empty streets, "you are the famous protectors of Neversand."
Yuzuki stepped forward, Amok materializing beside him.
"And you are one of the dogs of Kugutsu Island."
Dare smiled, but there was no humor in his expression.
"Dog? Interesting choice of words, coming from someone who serves two masters."
"Two masters?" Gotier asked.
"Amok and Mao," Dare said. "Yes, we know about your... complicated situation."
The tension in the air became palpable. Yuzuki could feel Mao stirring in his mind, while Gotier struggled to keep Don'yoku under control.
"What do you want?" Akari asked, her hand on her sword.
"We want to see if you are worthy of our attention," Dare said. "Or if we should just wait for Taida to do the work for us."
"Taida is not your ally," Yuzuki said.
"No," Dare agreed. "But sometimes, the enemies of our enemies are... useful."
Without warning, Dare moved. Despite his size, he was surprisingly fast over short distances, his fist flying toward Yuzuki with enough force to break stone. Yuzuki barely dodged, the force of the blow creating a crater where he had been.
"Cross Style: Cellular Acceleration," Dare murmured, and suddenly his movements became even faster.
"Gotier!" Yuzuki shouted, "now!"
For a moment, Gotier hesitated. Part of him wanted to let Yuzuki fight alone, to let him face the consequences of his choices. But then he saw the civilians watching from the windows, saw the fear in their eyes, and remembered why he was there.
"*Dankai* Barrier!" he shouted, creating a shield of energy between Dare and a group of children who had hidden behind a wall.
Dare smiled.
"Interesting. You can still work together."
"When it matters," Yuzuki said, "we always can."
But even as he said it, he could feel the tension between him and Gotier, the broken trust that had not yet been repaired. And Dare could feel it too.
#### **Part X: Dangerous Revelations**
"You know," Dare said, easily blocking an attack from Zeke, "Minamino was right. You are divided."
"What are you talking about?" Akari asked, trying to flank the iron giant.
"The fight in the library," Dare said, casually, as if discussing the weather. "We heard everything."
Yuzuki's blood ran cold.
"Impossible. You were in the Low Quarter."
"Minamino has... methods," Dare smiled. "He knows about Stallo's family. About Aygon's daughter. About your... philosophical differences."
Gotier felt Don'yoku roar in his mind, fueled by anger and humiliation.
"You were spying on us," he said, the electrical energy beginning to dance around his fists.
"We were preparing," Dare corrected. "Knowing the enemy is the first rule of war."
"So it's war you want?" Yuzuki asked, his aura beginning to darken.
"No," Dare said, and for a moment, his expression became almost sad. "We want justice. But sometimes, war is the only path to justice."
He stepped back, his posture changing from aggressive to defensive.
"This was just a test," he said. "To see if you were still worthy of respect. And you are... more or less."
"More or less?" Zeke repeated, insult in his voice.
"You fight well together when forced," Dare explained. "But the trust between you is broken. And broken trust makes any group vulnerable."
He began to walk away, but stopped to look over his shoulder.
"Taida will arrive tomorrow at dusk," he said. "Prepare yourselves. And maybe... resolve your differences before then. You will need each other."
#### **Part XI: Consequences**
After Dare disappeared into the shadows of the Low Quarter, the group stood in silence in the destroyed square. The broken fountain was a physical reminder of how easily their defenses could be penetrated.
"They know everything," Akari said finally.
"Not everything," Yuzuki corrected. "But enough."
Gotier looked at him.
"Aygon's daughter. They will use her against us."
"Probably," Yuzuki admitted.
"So what do we do?"
Yuzuki remained silent for a long moment, looking at the debris around him.
"We do what we have always done," he said finally. "We protect who we can. We save who we can. And we pay whatever price is necessary."
"Even if that price is our own souls?" Gotier asked, his voice barely a whisper.
Yuzuki looked at him, his eyes filled with a dark determination.
"Especially then."
Gotier studied Yuzuki's face, seeing the darkness that had settled there.
"You have truly become a monster," he whispered.
"Yes," Yuzuki agreed. "But I am a monster who protects this city. And you, Gotier? What are you?"
The question hung between them, unanswered. As they returned to the castle, none of them noticed the figure watching from the shadows—Minamino, who had witnessed the entire encounter.
"Interesting," he murmured to himself. "Very interesting."
The storm was approaching Neversand. And when it broke, it would test not only the strength of the defenders, but their very souls. Some tests, Minamino knew, were impossible to pass without losing something essential in the process. And he was eager to see what Yuzuki and his allies were willing to sacrifice to prevail.
