Gift

Kaelon looked down at the kneeling woman a little flustered. He had never received this kind of treatment before. It took a bit of adjusting to go from everyone looking down on you to someone kneeling before you.

"Please stand up. You don't have to kneel."

He approached Elizabeth and helped her up. She smiled at his actions and took his hand without hesitation.

"Thank you boy, that's kind of you."

Kaelon smiled back at her and spoke.

"You're welcome, my name is Kaelon by the way."

"Well thank you Kaelon. Now come, let me give you a tour of the grounds."

Elizabeth took Kaelon around the temple. He followed behind Elizabeth through the magnificent halls of the temple. The atmosphere was one of solemn devotion and people moved with purpose.

They were walking towards the cafeteria and kitchen when Kaelon heard something. The clashing of swords rang in the distance. Identifying the sound, Kaelon started moving toward it. He strayed away from Elizabeth to find himself in the temple's training ground.

In the clearing, paladins clashed with each other in duels and practiced forms under grueling instruction. Kaelon approached from the side and observed their training with a fire in his eyes.

Kaelon's eyes were wide in astonishment as he watched one paladin in particular. He was a blonde haired, blue eyed giant. Standing a head taller than everyone around him, his sword moved with grace and speed.

His opponent was barely keeping up, his sword moving much slower. The giant seemed to be holding back to guide his fellow paladin. He used his sword to correct his opponent's mistakes and bad habits.

As he stared in awe Elizabeth came up from behind him.

"That man is Kane, The Dawn Marshal. He's the capitan of Altan's paladin order."

"Sounds impressive. He looks super strong."

"That he is. It's said he once held back an entire hoard of monsters on his own. That's how he earned his title of Dawn Marshal."

Kaelon looked at the man again, his gaze holding a clear respect for him. He turned back to face Elizabeth before motioning for her to lead the way.

"Let's keep going on the tour."

Elizabeth quickly stepped into place in front of Kaelon. She continued leading him through the grounds toward the cafeteria. They passed by a large garden on the way, flowers lining the path. Their golden petals resembling the sunlight.

The cafeteria was a large hall in the east wing of the temple. Rows of tables covered the floor and the smell of food spread from the kitchen. As Kaelon stepped inside his nostrils twitched and his mouth watered. He hadn't eaten in a couple days so the smell of food was unresistable to him.

He quickly turned to Elizabeth, a hand on his stomach.

"Elizabeth can I get something to eat? I haven't eaten in days."

The old woman looked at him with a soft gaze and nodded.

This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

"Of course Kaelon. Take a seat, I'll go get something from the kitchen."

As he sat Kaelon contemplated his situation. Things had changed dramatically compared to yesterday. He wasn't sure where this would lead him and the truth of his origins shockdd him to his core.

Now that he was in the temple things would be different. He didn't have to worry about food or shelter anymore. His safety was pretty much guaranteed in these white stone walls.

As these thoughts raced in his head Elizabeth came back and set a plate in front of him. Kaelon wated no time seing the food and began to eat it with fervor.

Elizabeth sat across from him and watched as he scarfed his meal down. She didn't interrupt until he had already finished eating.

"So what will you do now Kaelon?"

Kaelon looked at her with a confused expression.

"I thought you would tell me what to do now. Don't you have any plans for me or something?"

Elizabeth shook her head at his words. Her expression showed that she wouldn't dare impose her will on him.

"No Kaelon. How could I impose my will on the divine? You are free to do whatever it is you wish to."

"What do divine beings even do though? Have there been any other demigods before? What did they do?"

Kaelon was completely lost in the world. He went from struggling to survive in the slums to finding out he was a demigod in no time. It was a lot to think about and his future was a huge question mark.

"There have been demigods before, many actually. Most end up becoming figures of history, founders of great kingdoms and organizations. Demigods all have a gift from the gods, sometimes a talent others an item. How they use those gifts is usually what defines them."

Kaelon's eyes widened at her words. Immediately a question came to his mind. What was his gift? What talent did he have?

"How do I find my gift? Do you know what my gift is?"

Elizabeth faced him with a sorry expression.

"I don't know what your gift is, sorry. But if your divinity has awoken them your gift has to. Think back to the last couple days, have you found any new talents compared to before? Have you seen a magical item around?"

Kaelon replayed the last couple days in his mind. Nothing was out of the ordinary except for the gang war. His face was scrunched in thought for a while before he suddenly exclaimed.

"The sword! I had never lifted a sword before yesterday. How could a weak and injured slum rat kill three men the first time he touched a blade? That has to be it, nothing else would make any sense."

Elizabeth nodded in agreement at his words.

"Indeed, how could an inexperienced and injured fighter do what you did? It can only be explained by the divine gift."

Kaelon smiled brightly at her words. He now at least had a direction to go in.

"Can you get me a teacher? Preferably someone strong like Kane. If I'm gonna use my gift I'll need to learn first."

Elizabeth nodded at his question, She would do whatever he asked of her to the best of her ability.

"Yes I can, I'll arrange for you to join the paladins in their training. I'll ask Kane himself to take care of you."

Kaelon's smile grew even larger at her words. His eyes gleamed with excitement at the thought of the opportunity.

"Thank you Elizabeth! I appreciate your help with all this."

"No need to thank me Kaelon. This is my duty as the High Priestess of Altan's temple."

With that Elizabeth continued leading Kaelon through the temple. Next he saw a huge library, the tall walls lined with books and a lecture hall was tucked into the corner.

"Here is our library. Records from even the Bygone Era are still perserved here. The lecture hall over there is where you'll take some classes on basic literacy and arithmetic."

Kaelon turned to her with a displeased expression.

"You're gonna make me study?! I'm good, I don't need to read my gift is in the sword not magic."

Elizabeth put on a stern face and pointed a finger at him.

"If only your body is strong you won't make it very far. The mind needs to be strong too so don't complain."

Kaelon frowned a little but swallowed his rebuttal. It was true that being dumb was no good. Plus knowing how to read would make his life a lot easier.

The two continued on their tour of the temple. Elizabeth led Kaelon down opulent halls and explained where various things were. In the end she led him toward a room in the core of the temple grounds.

"Here is where your room will be. You will live here from now on. Let me know if you find it uncomfortable or if I can change anything to make it better for you."

Kaelon stepped into the room and tears came into his eyes. As someone who grew up in the slums, not only had Kaelon never had his own room he had never had a proper bed. Yesterday was the first time he slept in one and now he had his own.

The room itself wasn't the biggest but it had more than enough space for Kaelon. The bed sat in a corner and a simple desk sat next to it faving oht the window. On the bed was a familiar sword, Bogar's sword.

Kaelon turned to Elizabeth and spoke two simple words.

  "Thank you."
