The air in the "House of Despair" was thick, saturated with the smell of old dust and forgotten regret. But tonight, another scent mingled with it: the smell of fresh ink and perilous hope.
Alene stood in the middle of the planning room, once the stage for her worst nightmares, and felt a sharp contrast. The walls that had witnessed her tears now held the maps to a path of freedom.
"After the main Gu clan army, led by 'Wěn', leaves for the war," Kaito said, his practical, cold voice cutting through the silence like a knife, "the palace's defenses will be at their weakest. We will storm them, kill anyone who stands in our way, and seize control of the 'Defense Machine'."
"The Defense Machine?" Alene asked, the words feeling foreign on her tongue.
"Right, you wouldn't know," Kaito said, pointing to a small red dot on a complex map of the palace.
"We have sources inside the clan. We discovered the existence of an ancient machine directly beneath the palace, a machine capable of creating an energy barrier that can seal off the entire city of Chang'an. At that point, when the city and the 'Iron and Cross' road are sealed, no supplies will reach the army abroad. The Gu clan's defeat will be inevitable."
"Doesn't that mean we'll just be letting another demon into this city?" Yumi said, exhaling a ring of smoke from her pipe, her green eyes holding genuine concern. "The 'Yu' clan is not known for its mercy."
"At least the 'Yu' clan does not want to seal the city," Kaito retorted sternly. "And they won't. This means freedom of trade, freedom of movement, freedom for anyone who wants to leave. This is the best possible solution.
We don't have enough strength; we are only five hundred warriors, and not the best. Our only chance is to strike when they least expect it."
"Does the 'Yu' clan know about this?" Alene asked.
"No," Kaito said. "And that is the greatest risk."
Here, Akira, the bald dwarf who had been studying the maps with intense concentration, interjected. "New Year's Day," he said in a gruff voice. "When the entire city is drowned in celebrations and sake, at their moment of greatest weakness, we will strike the gates. The weapons I have made will open the way for us."
Alene felt this was her moment. "I have other information that might help us."
Everyone fell silent and looked at her.
"You know that a Panyer has appeared in the city."
Kaito nodded. "We know. And he is now a warrior under the command of Ling Gu. He will certainly go to the war."
"That is not my point," Alene said with growing confidence. "This Panyer... I have met him, and spoken with him. He came from the Forest of Restraint."
A stunned silence filled the room.
"The Forest of Restraint?" Akira said, his small eyes widening. "But how? It is said that all who enter it are lost! Wait... I heard a rumor from some woodcutters that the forest's fog has become thinner recently. Is it possible the Panyer did something?"
"That is what I believe as well," Alene said. "Perhaps we can use this to our advantage. For example, we bring the 'Yu' clan's army in through the forest to help us."
"But surely there are 'Gu' spies within the 'Yu' clan," Kaito said skeptically. "That is why we have not contacted them."
"What if we contact the leader directly?" Yumi said, her eyes shining with excitement. "I could form a special, secret squad."
"A dangerous plan," Kaito said after a moment of thought. "But it is better than relying on luck alone. We all know that every battle between the two clans ends in a stalemate.

Our revolution will fail unless something unexpected happens, like an attack from the 'Yu' clan from the rear." He looked at Alene with genuine appreciation. "Alright. We'll do it. It seems Da-yun's choice was a good one."
"If I am to do this and put my son's life on the line," Alene said, her voice as sharp as a blade, "I will ensure we win."
"Mama?"
The small voice came from the doorway. Everyone turned to see Rio standing there, rubbing his sleepy eyes.
Alene's heart clenched. She ran to him and knelt. "Rio, my love, what are you doing here?
I don't want to sleep alone."
Alene looked at Kaito with desperation.
"Go with him," Kaito said softly. Then he placed a hand on her shoulder. "We are all fighting for something. You are fighting for him. And that makes you the strongest among us."
Several days later, Yumi returned from her secret journey. Her face was tired, but her eyes shone with victory. "We succeeded! I met him, and he said he will create a special force! He believed us!"
That night, they celebrated. They shared a bottle of cheap sake and laughed in hushed tones. Kaito approached Alene and gave her a dark wooden staff, intricately carved and inlaid with a small blue stone that glowed with a faint light.
"I asked Akira to make this for you. You will be a good support... Sorceress of the Revolution."
"Sorceress of the Revolution?" Alene laughed. "What kind of title is that?"
"You don't like it? It's better than my title, 'The Arsonist', or Akira's, 'The Rebel Toad'."
Alene looked at the staff in her hand, then at the tired, hopeful faces around her.
For the first time in a long time, she felt she was not alone. Then she looked at Kaito.
"Whatever happens in the battle," he said with sudden seriousness, "I swear to you one thing: I will protect your son. Even if it costs me the revolution, and my life."
Alene lightly punched his arm. "He is my son. I will protect him. And you will protect him too."
Year 5003, Month of the Candle's Flicker: Day Two(Dream's Perspective)
After a full night of secluded training, Dream emerged from the library with the first threads of dawn. He was not walking; he was flowing. He felt the 'Rei' around him as a part of himself, and the quiet sense of pride he had recently discovered served as a cold fuel driving him forward.
He went directly to the training grounds, where he found Wěn overseeing the morning drills.
"I want a re-ranking," Dream said without preamble, his calm voice cutting through the sound of clashing wooden swords.
Wěn looked at him and raised an eyebrow. "No one is above the laws. Ranking is done once a year.
I have improved. I see that," Wěn said with suppressed anger. But here, the laws are everything. I don't understand why you want a re-ranking when you are going to the war anyway.
Your current rank is sufficient to place you on the front lines."
Dream froze.
Hong-min's memory offered no context, but 404's logic immediately caught the discrepancy. Ling Gu said he was not going. Wěn said he was. One of them was lying.
I want to see Ling Gu," Dream said, his tone becoming sharper.
Wěn sighed, seeming to see beyond the words. "Fine." He sent a telepathic signal. "Kāgē, take him."
Kāgē appeared from the shadows as usual. She led him silently through the familiar palace corridors. He reached Ling Gu's chamber, this time feeling a tension that hadn't been there before. He entered and found Ling Gu sitting behind his table, slowly sipping tea.
My friend," Ling Gu said with a smile. "I hear you caused a bit of a stir on the grounds. Thirsty for power, are we? I like that."
"Wěn said I am going to the war," Dream said directly.
Ling Gu laughed. "Wěn does not know everything. It's true, you are not going.
You impressed my father so much that day that he wishes to keep you here, safe, away from the harm of war.
404's logic stated coolly in his mind.
"However..." Ling Gu continued. I have a feeling a storm is coming here, to the palace itself. And I want my strongest warrior by my side when that happens.
Tell no one you are not going. Understand? And one more thing. You will change your training location. From today, you will remain and train in your room. Now, leave."
The stone room became his prison and his sanctuary. Days turned into weeks. He trained tirelessly in the dark, his body moving with mechanical precision. In the "Path of the Digger," he reached the "Earth" stage, where his steps became as heavy and steady as mountains.
He mastered "The Art of the Dewdrop" up to the fourth level, "Whisper of the Clouds," where his strikes became as silent and deadly as fog. His understanding of 'Rei' evolved immensely, and he began to feel it as a living part of himself, but his tiny reservoir and slow refinement speed remained his eternal chains.
Until that day came.
At the end of the month, with the beginning of a new year, he heard a sound he had never heard before.
A sharp, loud alarm, blaring from every corner of the palace, a violent metallic shriek that shattered the long silence of his training.
Dream rose, and in his gray eyes, there was no fear, only a cold glint of anticipation.
The isolation was over.
The storm had begun.
