  Avino Barani BeDar: Lord of Tefeia; one of the Convention’s senior diplomats.

  Yenna Barsi: Veteran reporter for the Watchlight.

  Ciamo III: Current King of Siocaea (since 376).

  Timeo Delisarmo BeTira: Peer and Veccian of Uscarazzis. Right-hand man to Murregamua.

  Tazzo Farian: Orphan peer from Cafrelon.

  Fernande Femerrini BeMeserra: Entirely turned, but not yet taken, younger brother of Teniet Rodrigo.

  Rodrigo Femerrini BeMeserra: Rightful (Orphan) Veccian of Encelise, Peer of the Convention of the Dewrose Republic. Currently administrator and custodian of the small town of Banleria, southwest of Furo. The first viewpoint character.

  Aitor Ferriz: Peer of the Convention with commercial ties to Pasavana.

  Tesaeo Grignao: A peer of the Convention.

  Illesogni: Rodrigo’s Rafadian steward.

  Vayor Meira: Orphan peer from Cafrelon.

  Milao: Young Boghen retainer to Rodrigo.

  Neppo Murregamua BeDunano: Speaker of the Convention, Veccian of Furo. Known as the “Father of the Republic.”

  Palenio: Junior retainer to Rodrigo.

  Dieste Panaz BeSudara: Teniroz and senior retainer to Rodrigo.

  Senri Papale: High-ranking officer serving at Tefeia.

  Moare Penintello: Infamously dour and contrarian peer of the Convention.

  Caetano Pesco: Orphan Veccian of Hasparri on Cafrelon.

  Neizan Rasallo: Elderly orphan peer for the island of Cansenila, on the east coast of Siocaea next to the Protectorate.

  Rucio XVI: Previous king of Siocaea. Took the throne on disappearance of his brother Tohanio in 342; resigned in favor of his son Ciamo in 376, following the scandalous failure of the Reclamation. Died in his sleep in 384.

  Arnu Samge: Senior retainer to Rodrigo. A former poacher and half-breed Boghen.

  Sandro: Junior retainer to Rodrigo.

  Goncharo Tereo: Veteran of the Reclamation and peer of the Convention.

  Tohanio II: King of Siocaea when the Blemish first struck the peninsula in 338. Disappeared in 342, succeeded by his brother Rucio XVI.

  Yossim: Retainer to Rodrigo, of Dundanite descent.

  THE FREE CITY OF PASAVANA

  Aianto Fessantine: Wealthy coal baron and industrialist of the third century (Ky), who spent half his fortune endowing Queen Dupinia’s College in Pasavana in his old age.

  Toania Lenlaia BeRunela: Journalist for The Obelisk, a prominent Pasavanan newspaper. The second viewpoint character.

  THE HIGH KINGDOM OF SYOSHEN VUKH

  Arvell: Former High King of Syoshen Vukh. Murdered by his wife, Eyanna Vogh, some years ago.

  Grenia Dük: Daughter to Hjan and Tatzine. Five years old.

  Hjan Dük the Elder: Father to Hjan Dük the Younger, a gifted doctor and discoverer of the cambion technology.

  Hjan Dük the Younger: Kerigzanan immigrant to Syoshen Vukh, who married into its royal family. The only living human who fully understands the creation of cambions. The third viewpoint character.

  Tatzine Dük: Youngest daughter of Arvell and Eyanna Vogh, wife to Hjan Dük and mother to Grenia. Member of the Beardogs.

  Kan Kurnel: Bastard son of Arvell, half-brother to Ghano, Maja Ruud, and Tatzine. Prince of Nath, and de facto minister of industrial development for Syoshen Vukh.

  Magho: One of the Beardogs. Twin brother to Nengse.

  Nengse: One of the Beardogs. Twin brother to Magho.

  Prid: A young Kerigzanan and assistant to Hjan Dük the Elder and, now, to his son. One of the Beardogs.

  Tol Stoneheel: Husband to Maja Ruud, son-in-law of Eyanna Vogh.

  Thorpas: Brother and betrayer of Arvell, brother-in-law to Eyanna Vogh.

  Velraya: Daughter of Thorpas, but generally loyal to Maja Ruud.

  Dorn Vogh: Recently-legitimized bastard son of Ghano, grandson of Eyanna Vogh.

  Eyan Vogh: Rebel of the Third Century who ran a brief, ill-fated campaign at forming a new Boghen nation in the highlands. Namesake and inspiration to Eyanna Vogh.

  Eyanna Vogh: Self-declared High Queen of the reborn Syoshen Vukh.

  Ghano Vogh: Eldest child and only son of Eyanna Vogh and Arvell. King of Balsupree, Lion of the Paore, and defender of the High Kingdom against invasion up the river.

  Maja Ruud Vogh: Second child and first daughter of Eyanna Vogh and Arvell. Wed to Tol Stoneheel, with whom she commands much of the High Kingdom’s western flank.

  THE WILD RANGE AND PROTECTORATE OF NOOR:

  Nan Sen Far: Turned nun at Pil Neng Say.

  Hygaara: Formerly known as the monk Hai Gahn Ra of Pil Neng Say stationhall. Founder and Master of the Wild Range.

  Resanna Lenlaia: Stepmother to Toania, in Ulvetto, northwest of Carbern.

  Tal Tem Noor: Turned, elderly abbess at the Pil Neng Say stationhall, and discoverer of its famous technique for delaying the progress of the Blemish via intensive meditation. Effective head of state for the Protectorate.

  Nuthmi: Former servant at Pil Neng Say. Now Hygaara’s mistress and mother of his children.

  Szezek: Security minister for the Wild Range.

  ANCIENT HISTORICAL FIGURES:

  Nunwai: Grandson of Rogu of Runhalla. First High King to hold Mar An Shil, who ended the traffic in Boghen slaves. His crown is still worn by Siocene kings.

  Rogu of Runhalla: First High King of Syoshen Vukh. Defeated a Dundanite client king in 253 pK, effectively halting Dundanite expansion over the peninsula, and declared himself High King in 248. All kings of Siocaea are descended from Rogu.

  Rucio I: First Rafadian-descended King of Siocaea, whose coronation is commemorated as Kingdom Year I. As he married into the line of Rogu under dubious circumstances, Boghen patriots consider Rucio I a usurper.

  Tatnan: First High King to reign from Nehmpegyin, following the first Rafadian incursion. Died in 45 pK.
