Ch. 41 - Sgt Holly and the Magical Girl Moving Brigade

The apartment buzzed with energy and effort. Distant footsteps pounding up and down the building’s old stairs, the front door creaking, laughter and small frustrations echoing from the hall. Ariel and Maddy, wrapped in blankets on the couch, were the audience to Holly’s morning marathon.

They could hear Holly’s voice ring out above the shuffle: “Okay, last trip—let’s move out, sailor scouts!”

Ariel sipped her coffee, letting the warmth chase away what little ache remained in her chest. “She’s going to throw her back out pretending to be Sailor Mercury,” she said dryly, though her smile made it clear she didn’t believe it.

Maddy giggled, mug balanced on her knee. “With those socks, I’d believe she could take on the whole League of Evil Exes and win.”

Before her last run, Holly had posed for them in the hallway: Mercury-blue knee-highs, a faded tank top that read ‘Strategy: Sparkling Water and Sheer Will,’ and hair escaping her ponytail like battle ribbons. She looked, as Maddy put it, like the world’s most cheerful video game speedrunner.

Through the window, Ariel and Maddy watched Holly dash across the street, Jordan following with the steady trudge of someone who’d just realized he was the only one not getting paid in hugs and breakfast. Holly waved a monitor arm in the air like a trophy, blue socks a flash in the gray daylight.

Ariel let out a sigh as she watched. “Please, don’t drop it,” she muttered, voice almost a prayer.

  “Which one?” Maddy teased.

“Either,” Ariel answered, unable to keep the fondness out of her tone.

The door creaked open again and Holly barreled in, her arms full, face flushed with triumph. “Monitor arm delivered!”

Jordan followed, eyeing the desk setup with the wariness of a man approaching a sleeping bear. Holly gestured grandly. “Set it here! Welcome to the command bridge!”

“I am not part of your magical girl army,” Jordan said, setting the monitor arm down with a soft thud.

“Give it time,” Holly replied, already unscrewing the clamps. “You’ll get your transformation sequence.”

Back out they went, leaving Maddy and Ariel in a sudden hush broken only by the faint hum of the city outside.

“She’s got boss fight energy,” Maddy said, tucking her feet up under her. “Was she always like this?”

Ariel gave her a knowing look. “She tried to play it cool when we first met. But I think once she realized I was soft for anime girls and sweet food, she gave up pretending.”

Soon, the front door swung open again. This time Holly appeared cradling Ariel’s giant PC tower in her arms like it was an ancient artifact. Ariel’s breath caught; Maddy whispered, “Should we light a candle?”

“I’m already doing it internally,” Ariel replied.

Jordan stumbled in behind, cables everywhere. “Does your setup require this many wires?”

With comic reverence, Holly set the tower down beneath the desk and exhaled. “She lives!”

Ariel sagged into the couch, relief written all over her face. “You are a miracle worker.”

“I’ll expect payment in baked goods,” Holly said, ducking under the desk to untangle cables while Jordan tidied the sprawl.

Piece by piece, the command center came together: monitors adjusted and locked into place, the mechanical keyboard dusted off and clicked experimentally, docking stations connected, everything lined up in a neat, symmetrical row. Even the cables were zip-tied with surprising neatness.

Holly finally stepped back and planted her fists on her hips, surveying her work. “Not only is it goddess-tier, but now it gets golden hour like a real influencer.”

Jordan just rolled his eyes. “You mean the glare.”

  Holly grinned. “Ambience, soldier.”

With the work finished and the apartment humming with a new, slightly geekier energy, everyone finally collapsed into their respective seats. Jordan claimed the armchair like a man who’d earned every minute of rest. Maddy bounced beside Ariel, still bubbling with energy.

Coffee flowed again. Holly refilled everyone’s mugs and, with a showy wink, delivered Ariel’s with a tiny flourish like the world’s most dramatic barista.

“So,” Holly began, fixing Maddy with a grin, “your magical girl levels are off the charts, but what do you actually do?”

Maddy’s face lit up. “I’m a curator at the Seattle Pop Culture Museum! I started last year.”

Ariel blinked, surprised. “That’s...wait, that’s incredible.”

Holly let out a gasp, nearly vibrating with excitement. “The one with the rotating Ghibli exhibit? The classic games? The cosplay archive?”

Maddy nodded, eyes shining. “I helped put together the Ghibli one last fall! I’m working on a new exhibit now—all about animal companions in anime and video games. You know, the cats, dogs, fairies, all the little magical creatures that follow heroes around? We’ve got plush displays, vintage Pokémon merch, even an interactive Nintendogs corner.”

Jordan muttered, “Here we go,” from behind his mug.

Ariel and Jordan exchanged a look that was equal parts delight and dread.

Holly leaned in, eyes sparkling. “If you need volunteers for animal costume try-ons or demo days, you have to call us.”

Maddy burst out laughing. “Oh, you’re already on the list. There’s going to be a group photo op with giant plushies and maybe even a mascot parade.”

Holly turned to Ariel, eyes wide. “We have to go. Please, say we can go?”

Ariel laughed. “After my check-up Saturday. Deal.”

Maddy clapped. “I’ll give you the full behind-the-scenes tour. Archive vault, costume closet. The works.”

Holly pretended to swoon, falling sideways into Ariel, who caught her easily.

Maddy hugged both of them as she and Jordan prepared to leave. “Next weekend! You’re officially on the guest list.”

Jordan gave Ariel a gentle, grateful smile as he headed for the door. “Thanks for letting us invade.”

Holly wrapped him in a hug, mumbling thanks and half-hearted complaints about being kept out of the magical-girlfriend loop.

When the door closed behind their friends, the quiet that followed felt like a soft exhale after hours of happy chaos. Holly sagged against Ariel, melting into her side, her face flushed and her body heavy with a sweet exhaustion that only comes after a day spent in motion. Ariel lifted her arm and pulled Holly in tighter, letting Holly's head rest against her shoulder. For a moment neither of them spoke, just listening to the muted city sounds and the faint click of the radiator.

“You ever think you’d see your whole life get moved across a street like this?” Holly asked, her voice soft and almost disbelieving, as if she couldn’t quite believe the view in front of her was real.

Ariel ran her hand slowly through Holly’s hair, letting the silky strands slip between her fingers. “Not like this,” she answered after a while. Her voice was gentle, almost reverent. “But I’m glad it’s here. I’m glad you’re here. I think… this might be my favorite version of our life so far.”

Holly nuzzled in closer, breathing deep, letting the moment linger. The afternoon light slanted across the living room, catching on the neat rows of monitors and the small herd of plushies clustered around Ariel’s desk. It felt like the very air inside the apartment was promising them rest as a home was slowly taking shape in front of them.
