The bell above the café door jingled as Ariel stepped inside, letting in a quick chill of Seattle's late autumn air. The café was already humming, steam hissing, coffee beans grinding, laughter from the corner where a pair of students argued over a board game. The smell of pastries and espresso was an instant comfort.
Behind the counter, Holly was showing Lila how to stack croissants in the display, while Jordan was prepping shots at the espresso machine. At the sound of the bell, Holly’s eyes darted up. When she spotted Ariel, her whole face went soft and bright. She didn’t even hesitate. she scooted around the counter and bounced over, arms already open.
“Red!” she called, practically sparkling.
Ariel grinned, letting Holly pull her into a tight, enveloping hug. She burrowed into the warmth and layers, only tilting her head up to whisper, “You know you left some bruises on my belly last night?”
Holly’s breath caught in a soft, playful gasp; she nuzzled her nose against Ariel’s cheek. “Mmm. There’s still plenty more of you to grab, you know.” Their eyes met, electricity humming between them, intimate and a little mischievous, before Holly gave her a quick squeeze and let go.
"You're an animal," Ariel smirked as she nuzzled back.
“I’ll go get your coffee started,” Holly said with a wink, giving Ariel one last squeeze before skipping back behind the counter.
Ariel made her way to her usual seat near the counter, peeling off her scarf and hat. She set her bag at her feet, still smiling. Jordan leaned over the counter, giving her a nod. “Back to grace us with your presence, Director?”
Ariel rolled her eyes. “Just making sure you haven’t replaced me with someone more caffeinated.”
Jordan smirked, giving her a sideways look. “We tried. No one could handle Holly’s playlists and Lila’s existential rants about the perfect presentation of pastries.”
Lila, cheeks pink but proud, glanced over from the register. “Existential is the only way to approach croissants, actually.”
Ariel laughed, shaking her head. “I missed this place.”
Holly returned with Ariel’s mug, huge, perfect, swirled with just a little sugar. Just how she liked it. “There you go, love,” she said softly, sliding it over with a little flourish.
Ariel took a long sip and let out a satisfied sigh. “Just what I needed.”
Lila leaned in, voice conspiratorial. “We have a new raspberry danish today, if you want. Jordan ate three before ten o’clock.”
Jordan protested, but Ariel laughed, “No shame. Maybe I’ll try one after this.”
“Hey, I need my energy to keep up with Holly’s opening shift dance breaks,” Jordan said with mock seriousness.
Holly stuck out her tongue. “Maybe you should join in next time instead of hiding in the back with the biscotti.”
Jordan rolled his eyes, but his smile stayed warm. “We’ll see if the world’s ready for that.”
A customer at the far end waved, and Lila hurried off to help. Jordan went back to counting change, leaving Holly and Ariel with a rare quiet moment.
Holly leaned in close, her voice low and fond. “You look cozy today. And happy.”
Ariel grinned. “I am. The walk over here was cold, but seeing you makes up for it.”

Holly brushed Ariel’s hair back gently, letting her fingers linger for a heartbeat. “Good. I like knowing you’ll show up for me.”
Ariel squeezed her hand. “Always.”
Holly gave her one last loving look before slipping back behind the counter, cheeks still pink, energy bubbling.
Ariel settled in, coffee warming her hands, letting the friendly noise and morning bustle fill her up. She sipped slowly, the warmth spreading through her chest as she watched the café buzz with life. Lila moved between customers with growing ease, occasionally flashing Holly a proud grin. Jordan hummed to the rhythm of the grinder, and Holly tapped her fingers to the beat of a jazzy cover playing through the speakers.
Midway through her second sip, the bell above the door jingled again. Marissa stepped in, cheeks pink from the cold, her hair slightly tousled by the breeze. She spotted Lila and lit up with a soft, shy smile.
Lila didn’t hesitate. She let out a quiet squeak and practically bounded around the counter, apron fluttering behind her. She threw her arms around Marissa and kissed her square on the lips, quick but full of affection. Marissa laughed, surprised and delighted, her hands coming up to Lila’s waist as they steadied together.
“Oh my god,” Holly whispered dramatically as she leaned on the counter beside Ariel. “They’re so cute I might combust.”
Ariel grinned into her mug. “That was an honest-to-God Romcom moment. Like, she literally sprinted into her arms.”
Holly wiped away a pretend tear. “Young love. So bold. So pure.”
Jordan glanced over with an exaggerated sigh. “Please, you're going to make Ariel and Holly melt into a puddle.”
Lila finally pulled back, breathless and beaming, and guided Marissa toward the counter. The two whispered and giggled, completely wrapped up in their own little world.
Ariel nudged Holly gently. “You think we looked that lovestruck when we started dating?”
Holly smirked. “No. We looked worse. You were terrified and I was a disaster. It was perfect.”
They laughed together, the moment sweet and full of memory. Ariel took another sip of coffee, letting the scene play out around her, every detail adding to the quiet, steady joy she felt. The day unfolded in cozy waves: regulars trickled in and out, conversations drifted from favorite anime to the best ramen shops in the city, and the scent of fresh espresso never quite left the air. Ariel lingered, chatting between sips, sometimes sketching ideas into her notebook, sometimes just watching the light shift across the hardwood floor.
At one point, Jordan switched the playlist to something more upbeat, and Lila started dancing behind the counter again, dragging a giggling Marissa into an awkward twirl. Ariel and Holly exchanged a look, utterly smitten by how sweet it all was. Time didn’t feel heavy here. It slipped by like a soft current, gentle and golden.
As the afternoon wore down and the shadows stretched longer across the café floor, Ariel realized how grateful she was for this little group that had formed around her. A mosaic of oddballs and charm, all brought together by caffeine and care. With a smile tugging at her lips, she glanced at everyone and spoke up.
“Hey. What if we all went out for dinner after close?” she asked, eyes bouncing from Holly to Lila to Jordan.
Jordan looked up from the till. “I’m in. Lemme call Maddy and see if she wants to join.”
“Dinner sounds perfect,” Holly said immediately, not missing a beat to her little jig she was doing to the music.
Lila beamed. “Yes, please. That sounds amazing.”
As Jordan stepped away to phone Maddy, he paused mid-step and turned back. "Hey, what if we went to my parents' place? Their restaurant just reopened the chef's table since the remodel."
"Wait, the Japanese place you told us about?" Holly asked, her eyes lighting up.
Jordan nodded. "Yeah. They’d love to see you and I'd love to introduce them to everyone else."
Lila clapped her hands together. "That sounds perfect. Oh my gosh, do they still do that matcha mousse?"
"Every day," Jordan said with a grin. He pulled out his phone and began dialing. "I’ll reserve the chef’s table."
Ariel glanced toward Holly with a slow smile. "Okay, now I’m excited."
Within a couple of minutes, Jordan came back giving a thumbs up. "We’re good for 6:30. They’ll set out the special menu."
Cheers went around the café. The buzz of evening began to settle over them as customers trickled out. Lila swept down the back hallway to hang up her apron, Marissa helping her stack chairs. Jordan did the last wipe-downs at the counter while Holly powered down the espresso machine. Ariel helped fold the outdoor chalkboard sign and flip the closed sign in the window.
The bell over the door jingled one last time as Maddy arrived, bundled in a crimson pea coat with faux-fur trim. "I’m not late, am I?" she asked, breath fogging in the chill.
"Perfect timing," Jordan said, sliding an arm around her waist and kissing her cheek.
Maddy beamed and greeted everyone, exchanging hugs and excited chatter. Outside, the last of the golden light bled away into early evening, and inside the café, the group gathered their coats and bags, the cozy space now hushed and clean.
Ariel stood by the door, holding it open as everyone filed out. She lingered a moment longer, glancing around the café one last time, then smiled and stepped into the crisp evening air with her friends.
