Ch. 87 - the Sword and the Shield

The group followed Abigail through the vibrant maze of the convention floor, weaving between clusters of cosplayers and pop-up photo ops, the sound of game trailers and laughter mixing with the sharp tang of coffee carts. Banners for upcoming titles rippled overhead, booth lights blinking like constellations across the expanse.

Maddy was already in full convention mode, her phone out for candid photos and videos. “Look at those plushies at the Tumblebrook Games booth! We’re coming back for those later,” she promised, tugging at Jordan’s sleeve. Lila, half-shy, half-delighted, stayed close to Marissa, eyes big as they passed a trio of streamers filming live.

Holly gave Ariel’s hand a reassuring squeeze, keeping close but letting Ariel set the pace. “You doing okay?” she asked quietly.

Ariel nodded, still feeling the warm afterglow of Holly’s rescue and her friends’ support. “Yeah. Actually… I think I’m looking forward to this,” she admitted, a little amazed at herself.

As they turned down a main aisle, Ariel’s eyes caught on a shimmering sign farther down—an elegant indigo-and-silver banner: Moonlight Atlas Studios – Celestial Symphony IV: Melodies of Silence. For a split second, her heart leapt. She glimpsed a looping trailer and a crowd clustered near the demo stations, along with the faintest echo of a familiar melody. She slowed almost imperceptibly, her gaze lingering.

Holly noticed, squeezing her hand. “See something good?”

Ariel’s voice was almost reverent. “That’s… Moonlight Atlas. The Celestial Symphony series—they make my favorite games. I can’t believe they’re here.”

Jordan grinned, glancing at the logo. “We’ll come back, yeah? Gotta see you in full fangirl mode.”

Ariel laughed, a little breathless, nerves and excitement intermingling. “Deal. First, we’ve got a booth to hold down.”

Marissa smiled, catching Lila’s gaze. “We’ll cheer you on from the sidelines. Lead the way, Director.”

With that, the group moved on, letting the moment of anticipation simmer: Ariel’s favorite studio waiting like a star on the horizon, her own debut at the Willowbound booth first on the agenda. Conversation picked up again, the buzz of the convention around them, the little world of friends, love, and possibility at its core.

Holly nudged Ariel, her voice warm and teasing. “Just think! By the end of today, you’ll have made someone else’s favorite game memories. Ready?”

Ariel squeezed her hand, a smile breaking through her nerves. “Yeah. I’m ready.”

As they neared the Willowbound booth, Ariel took a deep, steadying breath, her confidence growing with every step. Whatever happened next, she knew she wasn’t facing it alone.

The Willowbound Games booth glowed with energy and anticipation. A wide monitor mounted above the table played the Animal Companions trailer on a smooth loop, the screen awash in soft woodland greens, chubby creatures bounding across pixelated grass, and the sweet waltz of the game’s theme swelling in the background. Plushies of Mossy and Puddle peeked from the table, surrounded by neat stacks of shiny enamel pins and full-color posters.

As they arrived, Ariel took in the scene with a happy, slightly nervous breath. Lila, Jordan, Marissa, and Maddy lingered on the far side of the main aisle, blending in with the crowd, waving when Ariel caught their eyes, but clearly excited to explore the rest of the con.

Ariel turned to Holly, voice gentle. “You know you can go wander with them, right? I’ll be fine.”

Holly just grinned, folding her arms. “Are you kidding? This is the best show in town. I wouldn’t miss it for the world. Besides, who else is going to make sure you don’t end up answering questions about every single fish species in the game all at once?”

Ariel laughed, her nerves dissolving as Holly bumped her shoulder. Abigail, already busy arranging swag behind the table, looked up and gave Ariel an approving nod. “Let’s make some magic.”

It didn’t take long for the first wave of attendees to approach; fans excited to try the playable Act 1 demo lined up quickly, tickets and phones in hand. The demo kiosks were set up side by side, and the sound of gentle music and delighted “Aww!”s as players met Mossy or Tufftail for the first time mingled with the convention’s background hum.

Ariel and Abigail manned the table, handing out collectible enamel pins of Mossy, Tufftail, Mallow, and Shika. Posters vanished nearly as fast, Ariel and Abigail signing them with careful swirls, sometimes adding little doodles if a fan asked.

The questions came in a steady stream:

“How did you come up with the companion system?”

“Will the animal outfits be cosmetic only?”

“Is the fishing minigame really as hard as everyone says?”

Ariel smiled through each one, answering with warmth and patience, occasionally glancing at Holly for reassurance.

When a young girl in a bright green scarf approached, clutching a notebook, Holly noticed Ariel’s smile falter under the flurry of overlapping questions from other attendees. Holly stepped forward, her voice easy and bright. “One at a time, folks! Ariel’s got answers for days, but let’s make sure everyone gets their moment.”

The group laughed, the mood lightening, and the crowd naturally formed a more manageable line. Sometimes, when a particularly shy fan hesitated, Holly would ask a gentle question or flash a supportive grin, helping them find their words.

Some attendees, recognizing Holly from the viral engagement photo, asked if she’d join in for pictures with Ariel. Holly obliged with playful poses, one time striking her now-famous magical girl stance, another time pulling Ariel into a quick side hug as a couple posed with them both. Ariel, seeing Holly in the photos beside her, felt her confidence soar.

Every so often, Holly would lean in, quietly checking, “Need a break, Red?” Ariel always shook her head with a grateful smile, her nerves melting each time Holly’s hand found the small of her back, steady and grounding.

Between demo rotations, Abigail fielded a few questions from press, and even she found herself swept up by Holly’s easy banter with the crowd. “You two make quite the team,” Abigail murmured to Ariel at one point, passing her a water bottle as the booth surged with another group of fans.

By midday, Ariel’s signing hand was tired and her cheeks ached from smiling, but her heart felt full. Holly never left her side, deflecting when a crowd started to press in too close, giving out swag and laughing with fans, seamlessly blending support and sparkle.

And as the Animal Companions trailer played its sweet, looping refrain, Ariel realized she was exactly where she wanted to be: surrounded by fans, her team, and the love of her life, all celebrating something she helped bring into the world.

For a little while, the current of eager fans ebbed, giving Ariel a chance to rest behind the table. She slumped gratefully into her chair, a fresh bottle of water in hand, her cheeks still warm from all the excitement. Holly was right at her side, one hand gently stroking up and down Ariel’s back in soothing, absent circles.

Ariel took a long sip, exhaling with a soft, happy sigh. “I can’t believe how fun this is,” she admitted, her voice quiet enough to only reach Holly. “I thought I’d be nervous the whole time, but it’s actually… I don’t know. It feels good.”

Holly grinned, stretching out beside her, her blazer sleeves pushed up to her elbows. “You look like you were born for this, Red. And for the record,” she lowered her voice to a teasing drawl, “I could get used to being the arm candy of a gaming celebrity. All these people wanting your autograph and mine? If this is my new side gig, sign me up.”

Ariel let out a short laugh and nudged Holly with her shoulder, eyes shining. “Just don’t let the fame go to your head, Vi. You know I’m only in it for your magical girl poses.”

Holly made an exaggerated swoon, her head leaning against Ariel’s as they both laughed softly. Ariel took another sip of water and let her head rest on Holly’s shoulder, content for a moment just to breathe and listen to the gentle noise of the convention all around.

Across the booth, Abigail leaned casually against a stack of demo boxes, watching the two of them with a faint smile. She pulled her phone out, thumb tapping quickly as she scrolled through her messages. After a moment, she sent a brief text, her expression unreadable: thoughtful, maybe, or quietly resolved. She slid her phone back into her jacket, her gaze returning to the crowd with renewed focus.

The reprieve didn’t last long; the low tide of the aisle soon surged back, fresh faces and eager voices filling the air with anticipation. Ariel straightened in her chair, Holly squeezed her hand, and together they turned to greet the next wave.
