Ch. 67 - The Pattern Submits

Saturday morning, Ariel and Holly entered Java Junction, the familiar chime of the door and the smell of espresso instantly grounding Ariel’s racing heart. Jordan, behind the counter, met Ariel’s eyes and gave her the smallest, knowing nod. Lila, bright and friendly as always, was arranging pastries on a tray. Maddy, already seated at a small table near the window with a hot chocolate in hand, leapt to her feet the second she saw them.

“Heyyy, lovebirds!” Maddy called out, rushing toward them. She enveloped both Ariel and Holly in big, bouncing hugs, her energy unmistakable.

“Hi, Maddy!” Holly laughed, returning the hug. “Someone’s had sugar already, huh?”

“Shhh, let me be!” Maddy grinned. “I...needed to test out all of the new pastries! I’m just doing my civic duty.”

Jordan called from behind the counter, “What brings you out so early?”

Holly skipped over to him, bouncing on her toes. “It’s our walk day and I need fuel. Vanilla latte for me, and the usual for my girl.” She beamed, her cheeks pink from the cold.

Ariel smiled, hovering nearby as the group exchanged hellos and small talk. Holly teased Lila about her latest latte art fail, and Jordan cracked a joke about needing a raise for working with such a raucous crew on a weekend. Maddy perched at her original table again, feet tapping happily, adding her own excitable energy to the conversations.

Ariel’s nerves were humming, but she held it together, quietly scanning the room for the best seats. She spotted a pair of comfy armchairs near the window with a perfect view of the TV mounted on the wall behind the counter. There were only two other customers in the café, heads down over their phones and pastries, so the chairs were free. Ariel drifted over, settling into one and setting her bag beside her, heart pounding.

A moment later, Holly came over with both coffees, plopping down beside Ariel and handing her the cup. “Here you go, Red. One of these days, you’re gonna let me pick your order and go wild, right?”

Ariel laughed, savoring the warmth of the cup between her hands. “We’ll see about that.” She forced herself to keep the conversation going, chatting about the walk to the park, the weather, Holly’s plans for their lazy Saturday. All the while, she watched the clock, waiting for the cue.

At exactly the right moment, with Holly distracted talking to Lila, Ariel caught Jordan’s eye. She gave the smallest nod. Jordan immediately moved into action, grabbing the remote, turning off the cozy playlist that filled the café, and switching on the TV. The Willowbound YouTube channel flashed onto the screen.

The café music faded. Holly, mid-sentence, paused. “Hey, Jordan, did the music-?”

Before she could finish, the Willowbound livestream began: the Wispwood Haven title card blooming across the TV, colors swirling, music swelling. Holly’s attention was instantly captured, her coffee halfway to her lips.

A beat of confusion crossed her face. “Wait, is this…?”

But then the trailer started in earnest: gameplay....leading right into the reveal of animal companions. One by one: Mossy rolling out of a bush, Pibble chirping, Tufftail causing mischief, Puddle wiggling across a sunlit path. All animal companions that Holly herself had talked about with Ariel. Named. Drew.

The café fell utterly silent except for the sound of the trailer and Holly’s barely-whispered words.

“What the f...? How…?” Her jaw dropped. She slowly set her cup down, standing up and taking a few small, mesmerized steps toward the screen, as if she needed to see it closer to believe.

Maddy stayed still in her seat, her hands gripping the edge of the table, bouncing slightly in place with excitement.

Ariel’s breath caught as she watched Holly, knowing what was about to happen. She slid her hand into her coat pocket and palmed the velvet ring box.

The trailer reached its quiet, beautiful climax. The masked red panda, Shika, appeared on the screen, curling up next to the player by a fire, the flames reflecting in two different colored eyes. Hazel....and violet. Holly stared, eyes wide, mouth open, in stunned disbelief. She took another hesitant step closer, needing to be sure.

“That’s… that’s me...?,” she whispered, breath shaking. “Those are my....”

She turned, dazed, looking for Ariel, and found her on one knee, ring box in hand, eyes shining and brimming with emotion.

For a moment, Holly didn’t process it. Lila, watching the trailer, turned to say something about how cute the fox was and then caught sight of Ariel kneeling before Holly. She emitted a sharp gasp as she placed her hand to her chest, nearly falling over. Maddy slapped a hand over her mouth, her eyes misting over and beaming as she bounced silently in place.

The two customers glanced up, catching on quickly, faces lighting up as they realized what was happening.

Holly’s hand flew to her mouth. “Ariel…?” she said, her voice trembling, eyes filling with tears.

Ariel looked up at her, hands shaking but voice clear and full of feeling.

“Holly… you remember when you joked, ages ago, about how Wispwood Haven would be even better if it had animal companions? How it would make the world feel alive and magical? And then proceeded to give the most well-though out impromptu explanations for each animal? Well, that idea never left me. You sparked something in me that night, something I couldn’t let go. I spent weeks building a whole pitch, hoping it could capture even a little of your joy and creativity. Every animal companion you just saw… it’s because of you. And Shika, the red panda, she’s a tribute to you. To your warmth, your spark, and yes, your eyes.”

Ariel’s voice wavered as she reached into her coat pocket, pulling out the velvet box and opening it, revealing the violet sapphire ring gleaming inside.

“I know that marriage has come up in a few conversations. But...I don't want it to just be a conversation anymore. You are my home. You’re the one who brings magic into my world, who makes me want to be brave and open and true. You’ve held me through everything: the fire, the fear, the best and the worst days of my life. You saved me. More than you'll ever know. You've been my lighthouse since the day I met you, and I want to spend every day making you as happy as you make me. Holly Sinclair....Will you marry me?”

Holly’s tears spilled freely, her smile blinding, hands shaking as she reached for Ariel. “Yes...oh my god, yes! Yes, Ariel, yes!”

The café erupted in cheers. Lila and Maddy hugged, squealing and jumping in place. Even the two customers applauded, one of them already pulling out their phone to snap a picture. Jordan grinned, giving Ariel a subtle thumbs up, looking genuinely proud as he tried to subtly wipe a tear from his eye.

Ariel stood up, hands trembling, and gently slid the ring onto Holly’s finger. Holly pulled her in, tears on her cheeks, and they kissed: deep and unashamed, laughter mingling with happy sobs as the whole café celebrated around them.

For a few perfect moments, there was nothing else. Just Ariel, Holly, and a love that had changed everything.

“Okay, okay,” Maddy finally burst out, still bouncing with joy. “That was the most romantic thing I have ever seen.”

Everyone laughed, even as they wiped away tears.

Holly held Ariel’s hand and looked around at their friends, Lila blinking back happy tears, Jordan smiling behind the counter, and Maddy practically vibrating with excitement.

“I don’t think I’ve ever felt this happy,” Holly whispered.

Ariel leaned in, brushing her forehead to Holly’s. “Me neither.”

And the café buzzed with warmth and joy, wrapping them all in the start of a new forever.

As Ariel and Holly finally loosened their embrace, they barely had a second before Lila shot around the counter, her face flushed with emotion, eyes shining, and barreled straight into Holly, arms thrown around her in a trembling, exuberant hug.

“Oh my god! Oh my god!” Lila squeaked, nearly crying with excitement. “Congratulations, Holly!” She pulled back just long enough to throw her arms around Ariel, wrapping her as well as she could. “Congratulations, Ariel! I can’t believe it! I’ve never seen anything so sweet!”

Ariel laughed, hugging Lila. Holly was beaming, still teary, practically vibrating with joy.

Just beside them, Maddy clapped both hands over her mouth before exploding into motion. “You did it!” she squealed, bounding over and throwing her arms around both Ariel and Holly in one exuberant motion. “Oh my god, that was perfect! You got me crying and I already knew it was happening!”

Jordan sauntered over, a broad grin on his face. He wrapped his arms around both Holly and Ariel in a warm, brotherly squeeze. “You two, seriously. Best morning I’ve had in ages. Congratulations, you crazy lovebirds.”

Holly, face full of mock outrage and delight, smacked Jordan lightly on the shoulder. “You knew about this, didn’t you? You sneaky bastard! How could you keep that from me?”

Jordan laughed, shrugging, not the least bit sorry. “Client confidentiality, Hols. Also, Maddy knew too, you know? It was the only way I could ask her to be here without being weird about it.”

Holly gestured at Maddy, "Yeah, but she's adorable and precious!

Lila giggled through her tears. “He was so weird about the TV this morning. I should’ve known something was up!”

Maddy bounced on the balls of her feet, wiping at the corners of her eyes. “Seriously, though! I was dying trying to keep it a secret. I was seriously biting my tongue when you walked in!”

Ariel wiped at her own eyes, unable to stop smiling. “Thank you guys. Really. I couldn’t have pulled this off without Jordan’s help, and I...well, I’m just glad you were all here. I just wish I had told Marissa about it beforehand. I just didn't want to take any chances.”

Holly looked at each of them in turn, still overwhelmed. “You’re all family, you know that? This...” She waved her ring hand, laughing. “This is everything.”

As if summoned by Ariel's own words, the bell above the door jingled. Marissa walked in, bundled up from the cold, pausing as she saw the cluster of hugs and the general state of celebration.

Lila broke away from the group and ran over, grabbing Marissa’s hands. “Marissa! Ariel just proposed to Holly! Right here! She said yes!” Tears sparkled on her cheeks, her excitement contagious.

Marissa’s eyes went wide with delight. She immediately pulled both Ariel and Holly into a warm embrace, her hugs plush, comforting, and genuine. “Oh, that’s wonderful! I’m so happy for you both.” She gave Ariel a gentle squeeze, then wrapped Holly up tightly.

Jordan pretended to dab his eyes with a napkin. “Should we have thrown rice for this?”

Maddy snorted, leaning against the counter. “Confetti. Missed opportunity, people!”

Everyone laughed, the café filled with warmth and relief and pure happiness; a small found family, brought together by love and the promise of forever.

The morning celebration lingered with friends laughing, hugging, and passing the ring around for a closer look. Ariel had lost count of the number of times someone congratulated them, and her face hurt from smiling so much.

Eventually, as things calmed and everyone returned to their coffees and conversations, Holly leaned in close, her lips brushing Ariel’s ear. “Hey. We’ve got somewhere important to be.”

Ariel, still riding the high of the proposal, blinked in confusion. “We do? Where?”

Holly only grinned, eyes sparkling with mischief. “Give me a sec.” She darted to the counter, dropping a handful of bills and coins onto it. “Lila, I need two of everything in the display case. Yes, everything!”

Lila’s eyes went wide, but she immediately set to work, carefully bagging up every variety of pastry and sweet in the case. When she finished, she handed over four bulging bags, barely able to hide her laughter. “You two are going to have a feast!”

“Can I help carry one?” Maddy offered brightly, reaching for a bag. “Or at least test the frosting on one of those cinnamon rolls?”

Holly grinned. “Thanks, Mads, but I’ve got it. This haul is spoken for.”

She took the bags, turning to Ariel and waggling her eyebrows with a look that could only be described as wicked. “I come prepared,” she announced, hefting the bags for emphasis.

Ariel’s eyes widened in delighted realization, and she turned to the group. “Everyone, Holly and I… have somewhere important to be.” Her voice was full of promise as she stifled a giggle.

There were knowing grins and a chorus of “have fun!” and “don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!” as Ariel and Holly waved goodbye, the door chiming behind them.

Outside, the morning air felt even colder, the city’s energy buzzing around them, but the heat between them was undeniable. Ariel smirked, leaning in just close enough for only Holly to hear. “I can practically feel the heat coming off you.”

Holly’s smile went full fox, eyes dancing as she squeezed Ariel’s side and leaned in. “Red, you haven’t seen anything yet.”

And with that, they set off down the sidewalk, arms loaded with sweets and anticipation, the promise of a private celebration lighting their way home.
